THE BEST SONGS OF MAJROOH SULTANPURI – PART I

By the time you see a song in a movie, it goes through various steps:

  1. Its lyrics are written by the lyricist much before the movie is shot and then released.
  2. The lyrics are composed into a song by the composer who is often the music director too. Often #1 and #2 are reversed in that the composer gives a tune to lyricist to write lyrics on.
  3. The arranger (associated with the MD) gives background music.
  4. The director then directs the enacting of the song through the actors. In case it is a dance number, the choreographer comes in too. Cinematographer shoot the song on the camera.
  5. Finally, the movie is put together by the editor in concert with the director.

In all the steps above, my favourite part of the song is its lyrics; the direct representation of emotions through words.

I am fond of calling myself a lyrical man; words of the songs are often the most important part of the songs for me. Indeed, on the Facebook I have a page titled ‘Lyrical’ to honour and pay tribute to various lyricists. I have several (almost a dozen) posts on  my blog on my favourite lyricist and poet Shakeel Badayuni.

So far, on Lyrical, I have taken up four lyricists of great fame:

1. Shailendra. The opening song that I selected was Kuchh aur zamaana kehta hai.
2. Rajinder Krishan with his Mujhase mat poochh mere ishq mein.
3. Kaifi Azmi with his Jaane kyaa dhoondati rehati hain ye aankhen mujh mein.
4. Sahir Ludhianvi with Aurat ne janam diya mardon ko.

Tonight we take up Majrooh Sultanpuri‘s, the third most prolific lyricist in Hindi movies after Sameer and Anand Bakshi.

Majrooh is the fifth of our lyricists who was a contemporary of Shakeel Badayuni. Out of all these six (*including Shakeel), three have been from Uttar Pradesh, which says something about that region producing some great poets and lyricists.

Majrooh Sultanpuri was born on 01 Oct 1919 as Asrar ul Hassan Khan in a Tarin Pashtun family, in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh. His father was an officer in the police department, but, preferred to send his son for traditional madrasa (Urdu school) rather than provide him with English schooling.

He tried his hand at being a quack until he was noticed in a mushaira in Sultanpur.

He was a disciple of the great Urdu poet Jigar Moradabadi. When he visited Bombay in 1945 to participate in a mushaira, the director Abdul Rashid Kardar noticed him and invited him to write for the movies. Majrooh turned it down as he looked down upon movies! He was persuaded through his mentor Jigar Moradabadi and then there was no turning back.

Many traditionalists of the Urdu literature, however, felt that Majrooh sold his soul to the Hindi films and that he could have emerged a great poet in the likeness of Ghalib and Jigar.

The takhalus Majrooh means “injured” or “wounded”.

Majrooh was awarded, in 1993, the highest award – Dadasaheb Phalke award – for his lifetime contribution towards lyrics and poetry. He was the first lyricist ever to be given that award. For the film Dosti, that made Laxmikant Pyarelal famous, he was awarded the Filmfare Best Lyricist Award for the song: Chahunga main tujhe saanjh savere.

Song #1
Teri aankhon ke siwa duniya mein rakha kyaa hai

For someone who didn’t want to join Hindi movies, Majrooh emerged as a natural lyricist, very popular, very romantic without too deep poetry. I won’t like to compare him with Shakeel since Shakeel maintained the purity of Urdu lyrics and traditional Urdu poetry style.

Most of Majrooh’s songs are of Dil vil pyaar vyaar main kyaa jaanu, Baahon mein chale aao, Bangle ke peechhe, Ye raaten ye mausam nadi ka kinaara, and Dekho mausam kyaa bahaar hai. However, some of his lyrics are still comparable to Shakeel’s such as Hui shaam unaka khayaal aa gaya, Woh jo milate the kabhi, Rahe na rahe ham, Chhupa lo youn dil mein pyaar mera, Tu kahe agar jeevan bhar main geet sunaata jaayun, Mujhe dard-e-dil ka pata na tha, Hamaare baad ab mehfil mein afsaane bayaan honge, and the great song on eyes: Teri aankhon ke siwa duniya mein rakha kyaa hai.

The last one is from the 1969 movie Chirag. Hats off to Majrooh for writing this at the age of fifty! Hats off to Madan Mohan too for having composed it in Raag Jhinjhoti, the raag named after an apsara. There are two versions of this song: Mohammad Rafi singing for Sunil Dutt and Lata Mangeshkar singing for Asha Parekh.

The lyrics are exquisite and each word hangs on the notes of the composition like raindrops from green leaves.

Hui shaam unaka khayaal aa gaya

We have just started taking up our fifth lyricist in the Great Lyricists series: Majrooh Sultanpuri. He was the first recipient of Dadasaheb Phalke award for a lyricist in 1993. Later too only two other lyricists got the award: Kavi Pradeep in 1997 and Gulzar in 2013.

On the first day, as is usual for me, I give the best of the songs of the lyricists, especially those comparable with my favourite Shakeel Badayuni. We just took up Teri aankhon ke siwa duniya mein rakha kyaa hai.

Hui shaam unka khayal aa gaya is another one in which he poured his heart out. The 1968 movie Mere Hamdam Mere Dost starred Dharmendra and Sharmila Tagore, a pair first discovered by Hrishikesh Mukherjee who never got tired of saying that in them he discovered a pair that should be the best in Hindi movies.

Mere Hamdam Mere Dost was an Amar Kumar movie still remembered for its super hit songs made by Majrooh and Laxmikant Pyarelal.

Mohammad Rafi sang this song for Dharmendra (one of his best too) when the latter breaks up with Sharmila Tagore accusing her for deceiving him into believing that she was poor like him whereas she turned out to be a multi-millionaire’s daughter.

In this song, however, after taking to drinking in a huge manner, he bemoans that he cannot get rid of her khayaal!

Chhupa lo youn dil mein pyaar mera

If Hui shaam unaka khayaal aa gaya is eminently suitable for an evening song, so is the third best of his that I have taken. It is from the 1966 movie Mamta, arguably the best role performed by Suchitra Sen that matches Nargis’s role of a forced by circumstances courtesan in Adalat.

Roshan has composed it with great sensitivity. Lata Mangeshkar and Hemant Kumar have sung it as one of their immortal duets, at par with a great such as Aa neele gagan tale.

Roshan composed it in the Raaga of the evening: Raag Kalyan, Taal Kaherava.

Song #4
Jab dil hi toot gaya

We started with our fifth great lyricist in the Great Lyricists series yesterday: Majrooh Sultanpuri. As is often the case, on the first day, I merely give what I feel are the three best songs of the lyricist. My choices were: Teri aankhon ke siwa, Hui shaam unaka khayal aa gaya, and Chhupa lo youn dil mein pyaar mera.

As I posted these, one of the fans brought out that I am biased in favour of Shakeel Badayuni and that Majrooh was equally good, if not better. Here is what I wrote in response:

“I have no quarrel with that! When one has a favourite, one is partial! It can be proved, despite contrary beliefs, that Love is the most selfish feeling on earth since you love someone to the exclusion of others! I like Majrooh too and I am actually posting his songs as a tribute to him in Great Lyricists Series. But, I love Shakeel. With you, as you have mentioned, it is the other way round.

I remember when a poet was asked as to what did he see in a woman that he loved and called the most beautiful woman on earth when she looked so ordinary, he replied, “It is because you are seeing her with your eyes and not mine!”

Abdul Rashid Kardar gave break to Majrooh and later to Shakeel

As I brought out last night, Majrooh was a reluctant entrant into Hindi movies having been noticed by Abdul Rashid Kardar in a mushaira in Bombay. Kardar signed him up for the 1946 movie Shahjehan starring the first super-star of the Hindi movies: KL Saigal. By the way, Shahjehan had a story penned by Kamal Amrohi and the story was about a fictional incident in the reign of Shahjehan.

As with Shakeel’s first movie Dard one year later, the composer was Naushad.

Majrooh penned the following songs for the movie:

1. Jab dil hi toot gaya.
2. Gam diye mustaqil.
3. Jab usne gesu bikhraaye.
4. Chaah barbaad karegi.
5. Mere sapno ki rani Ruhi Ruhi Ruhi.
6. Jawani ke daaman ko rangeen bana le.
7. Aag lagi dil mein.
8. Kar liye chal kar.

Two other songs were penned by Khumar Barabankawi.

Majrooh’s first song in the Hindi movies became super popular. Sung by Kl Saigal himself, it was composed by Naushad in Raag Bhairavi, Taal Kaherava. Even till to date, it is counted amongst the best of KL Saigal songs.

As if two super hit songs in his very first movie were not enough, Majrooh topped it up with a third one too from 1946 AR Kardar movie Shahjehan starring KL Saigal; the movie based on a fictional incident in the life of the emperor. The story was written by Kamal Amrohi.

The third super hit song of the movie was also put together by Majrooh, Naushad and KL Saigal. Naushad, the undisputed master of Raaga based songs, composed it in Raag Bageshri, Tal Dadra.

Third day of taking up songs of Lyricist #5 (Not in any particular order or ranking) in our Great Lyricists series. The first day, at random, we took up three of his best written songs. The second day we started chronologically and took up three super hit songs from his first movie, the 1946 movie Shahjehan; all three having been composed by Naushad: Jab dil hi toot gaya, Gham diye mustaqil and Chah barbaad karegi.

Lets go on from there.

Whilst he was celebrating the super success of the songs of his very first movie, Majrooh fell ill and had to return to North from the polluting atmosphere of Mumbai. Hence, in the next three years he didn’t write any songs. In 1949 when he returned to pen songs for Mehboob Khan’s movie Andaz starring Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor and Nargis, he was arrested for his anti-establishment views (many Urdu poets and writers of that era had communist leanings). He was asked to apologise and he refused. So he was jailed for two years and it was during this period that his daughter was born!

Anyway, returning to Andaz, the songs of this movie are dear to me for two reasons: one that many of them were shot in my home-station Shimla and secondly, these were composed by Naushad.

Naturally, Mukesh singing for Dilip Kumar (Song #5) is the best song of the movie. It has been picturised during Nargis’s birthday party in Shimla. He would come to know only later that she was only being nice to him; else, she was in love with Raj Kapoor!

Uthaye ja unake sitam

The next one is an Aansu song (for the YKDN Fest starting tomorrow) but I can’t help it; it just falls chronologically.

On Raj Kapoor’s return, initially, it starts happily.

Finally, the story takes a turn (I am talking about 1949 movie Andaz) whose songs we have just started taking up. Nargis, in Shimla, having led Dilip Kumar to believe that she was interested in him, has her erstwhile lover Raj Kapoor return from England and she marries him. After marriage, Raj Kapoor finds out what was going on between his wife and Dilip Kumar working as a Manager of her estate.

This song comes about at that time when he tries to distance himself from his wife because of Dilip Kumar.

Hats off to Majrooh for the outstanding lyrics and hats off to Naushad for the composition in Raag Kedar, Taal Dadra.

Hum aaj kahin dil kho baithe

And the last song from the 1949 Mehboob Khan movie Andaz is a Mukesh song from happier times in the movie. Dilip Kumar riding a horse in Shimla saves the life of Nargis also on a horse when her horse runs amok. She invites him home and finds that he sings and plays the piano too.

Zara saamne aa

The next movie for which Majrooh penned songs was the 1950 movie Pyar, fourth of the 17 movies that Raj Kapoor and Nargis starred in together after 1947 Aag, 1949 Barsaat, and 1949 Andaz.

Rajendra Krishan penned most of the songs of the movie except one that was written by Majrooh: Vo sapnewaali raat milan ki raat that was sung by Geeta Dutt. All songs were composed by SD Burman.

The next movie for which he penned just one song (the others were penned by various lyricists including Sahir) was the 1953 movie Shole starring Ashok Kumar and Bina Rai. The song that he wrote was Bala se hasrate mit jaaye which was composed by Dhaniram and sung by Geeta Dutt.

And then came Guru Dutt’s 1953 movie Baaz for which Majrooh penned all the songs and OP Nayyar composed them. These were the songs:

Sare mehfil jo jala parwana

In the next movie, the 1953 movie Akash, once again he penned just one song: Ajib hai zindagi ki manzil sung by Shankar Dasgupta on a composition by Anil Biswas.

Truly, after the success of his 1946 movie Sahjehan, Majrooh was kind of struggling both because of his illness as also because of his anti-establishment ideas.

In 1954 came Shama Parwana, another movie regarding another poet as was the trend those days. Gul Mirza was a poet who used to sing in the palace of Mughal king Arkat-ul-Daula (another Hindi movies fascination those days). Gul Mirza falls in love with his daughter: Sahebzadi Aalam.

Majrooh Sultanpuri penned ten songs whereas Qamar Jalalabadi penned one:

In the last movie you must have seen Majrooh’s mastery over shair-o-shayari, one reason he was criticized after he joined Hindi movies that he ignored non-filmy poetry that he could have excelled in.

And then he penned songs for Guru Dutt’s 1954 movie Aar Paar. The movie starred Shyama, Guru Dutt, Jagdish Sethi, Johnny Walker, Shakila and Jagdeep.

This started a fruitful relationship not just with Guru Dutt but the composer of his songs: OP Nayyar.

The first movie of 1955 for which he penned the songs was: Sabase Bada Rupaiyya, a film directed by PL Santoshi and starring Sunder, Shashikala, Agha, Alhad, and Achla Sachdev.

Last night we had started with songs of the 1955 Guru Dutt movie Mr and Mrs 55 starring Madhubala opposite Guru Dutt.

We had just taken one song: Jaane kahan mera jigar gaya ji picturised on Johnny Walker (a must in Guru Dutt movies) and Vinita Bhatt.

It doesn’t require a reminder that once again Majrooh succeeded with OP Nayyar (after Guru Dutt’s Aar Paar just two movies before in 1954).

Lets take a duet between Mohammad Rafi and Geeta Dutt picturised on Guru Dutt (who died at the age of 39 years; some believe that he committed suicide whereas others maintain it was just an overdose of sleeping pills with alcohol) and Madhubala (who died tragically at the age of 36 years due to a hole in the heart).

Koi jab dard ga mara kabhi aansu bahata hai

That brings us to his last movie of 1955: Miss Coca Cola. This film directed by Kedar Sharma was an early example of a brand name being used as the title of a feature film. The movie starred Shammi Kapoor, Geeta Bali, Helen Richardson and Johnny Walker.

Majrooh Sultanpuri continued romancing with OP Nayyar when it came to making songs of the movie. And why not? After all they just finished songs of two movies Aar Paar and Mr and Mrs 55 and both had super hit songs.

They made the following songs for the movie:

Majrooh Sultanpuri reluctantly got into Hindi movies as a lyricist. But, once he took the step he became the third most prolific lyricist after Sameer and Anand Bakshi. He wrote more than 2000 songs. Hence, I have chosen more than 200 songs as his best songs. These are available in several parts.

THE BEST SONGS OF RAJA MEHDI ALI KHAN – PART I

I am fond of calling myself a lyrical man; words of the songs are often the most important part of the songs for me. Indeed, on the Facebook I have a page titled ‘Lyrical’ to honour and pay tribute to various lyricists. I have several (almost a dozen) posts on  my blog on my favourite lyricist and poet Shakeel Badayuni.

Raja Mehdi Ali Khan was chosen by me as Lyricist #9 (not in any particular order or ranking) in Remembering Great Lyricists series. He has been a favourite and I already have a comprehensive post on him: The Magic Of The Lyrics Of Raja Mehdi Ali Khan.

Here is now a more detailed post. The following posts about Raja Mehdi Ali Khan’s songs have been reconstructed from the same Facebook page Lyrical.

I started the series to bring home the point that whilst we genuinely love everything that Shakeel wrote, many other contemporary poets and lyricists were also good and popular.

So far, on Lyrical, I have taken up eight lyricists of great fame:

1. Shailendra. The opening song that I selected was Kuchh aur zamaana kehta hai.
2. Rajinder Krishan with his Mujhase mat poochh mere ishq mein.
3. Kaifi Azmi with his Jaane kyaa dhoondati rehati hain ye aankhen mujh mein.
4. Sahir Ludhianvi with Aurat ne janam diya mardon ko.
5. Majrooh Sultanpuri with Teri aankhon ke siwa duniya mein rakha kyaa hai. (Yet to be published here).
6. Jaan Nisar Akhtar with his Mujhape ilzaam-e-bewafai hai. (Yet to be published here).
7. Hasrat Jaipuri with his Aansu bhari hain ye jeevan ki raahen. (Yet to be published here).
8. Qamar Jalalabadi with his Ai meri zindagi tujhe dhoondun kahan. (Yet to be published here).

Tonight, as I said, we take up our ninth lyricst, Raja Mehdi Ali Khan‘s creation.

He is my second most favourite lyricist after Shakeel Badayuni. As you go through the posts you would realise as to why.

Having been born in 1928 in Jehlum in undivided India, when the partition of India took place, Raja Mehdi Ali Khan and wife Tahira refused to go to Pakistan despite communal riots. His patriotism came to fore in 1948 itself when he wrote the famous number: Watan ki raah mein watan ke naujwaan shahid hon for the movie Shaheed starring Dilip Kumar.

Raja Mehdi Ali Khan paired with the Music Director Madan Mohan to produce some of Lata Mangeshkar’s best numbers. She has acknowledged so.

Raja appears to have done everything at a relatively young age. It is as if he knew that he is going to die young at the age of 37 only on 29 Jul 1966.

When Shakeel gave his first film song in 1947 Dard: Afsana likh rahi hoon, Shakeel was 31 years old. Raja Mehdi Ali Khan was just 18 when he gave his, in his first movie Do Bhai. And what a song it was, sung by Geeta Dutt.

Indeed, Raja Mehdi Ali Khan together with Rajinder Krishan emerged as the lyricist of choice for heroines. Some of his best songs are:

1. Aap ki nazaron ne samajha pyaar ke kaabil mujhe.
2. Agar mujhase mohabbat hai mujhe sab apne gham de do.
3. Sapano mein agar mere tum aao to so jaayun.
4. Naaina barse rimjhim rimjhim.
5. Lag jaao gale ke phir ye hasin raat ho na ho.
6. Naino mein badra chhaye.

It is not as if he didn’t write for heroes. Taste some of his best there too:

1. Main nigahen tere chehre se hatayun kaise.
2. Tum bin jeevan kaise beeta poochho mere dil se.
3. Aap youn hi agar hamase milate rahe.

The first song that I give you is from his first movie, the 1947 movie Do Bhai, a Munshi Dil movie starring Ulhas, Kamini Kaushal, Ramayan Tiwari, Rajan Haksar and Paro Devi. Geeta Dutt sang six of the nine songs of the movie, Paro Devi two and Mohammad Rafi one.

The song was composed by SD Burman and was an instant hit together with Yaad karoge, also sung by Geeta Dutt.

Yaad karoge ek din humko yaad karoge

We started with his 1947 movie Do Bhai song. In a way, that wasn’t his first movie. His first movie was in 1946: Eight Days in which he was a Screenwriter and Dialogue Writer. So, I have correctly given you his first movie with songs: Do Bhai.

It was a Filmistan production directed by Munshi Dil. It starred Ulhas, Kamini Kaushal, Noor Jehan, Dipak Mukherjee, Ramayan Tiwari, Rajan Haksar and Paro in lead roles.

Songs of the movie were composed by SD Burman.

Very few lyricists are there whose very first movie has this kind of reception and impact. And the success of the movie depended to a great extent on Raja and Sachin da. They made the following songs:

1. Mera sundar sapna beet gaya – I have already given you.
2. Yaad karoge, ek din humko yaad karoge.
3. Aji preet ka nata toot gaya.
4. Duniya mein mere aaj andhera hi andhera.
5. Mere piya to base pardes re.
6. Yad rakhna mujhe yaad rakhna.
7. Hamen chhod piya kis des.
8. Amwa ki dali pe koel bole.
9. Kabhi bhule se na poochhi man ki baat.

If Raja Mehdi Ali Khan was just 17 years old when he wrote these songs, how old do you think Geeta Dutt (then Geeta Roy) was? She was just 16. This is how it came about:

Geeta Dutt (née Roy), born in 1930, had no formal training in music. Music director Hanuman Prasad heard her voice and made her sing two lines in a chorus in his film Bhakt Prahlad (1946). Considering a film took one to one and a half years those days, young Geeta would have been about 15 years old when she sang two lines in the Chorus.

SD Burman heard those two lines, and though her voice was part of that chorus, he realized her potential. He went to her place in Dadar to persuade her father to let her sing in his forthcoming film Do Bhai (1947). And that’s how history was made: two great personalities: Raja Mehdi Ali Khan and Geeta Dutt.

Raja wrote songs for only one movie in 1947.

He wrote songs for two movies in 1948: Actress and Shaheed.

Actress was a Najam Naqvi movie starring David Abraham and Rehana.

Shyam Sundar composed following three of his songs; the others were of Naqshab Jarchvi and Pyarelal Santoshi:

1. Ho gori tera banka chaila.
2. More angana balam ka.
3. Hello hello gentleman.

You won’t be able to guess which one I shall be giving you. Actually, you may if you have read my description in the first song (Day#1, Song #1). In that I mentioned that some of Lata Mangeshkar’s best songs (as acknowledged by her) were penned by Raja Mehdi Ali Khan and Rajinder Krishan.

Watan ki raah mein watan ke naujwan shaheed hon

Yesterday, we started with our 9th Lyricist (not in any order or ranking): Raja Mehdi Ali Khan and took up two songs from his 1947 movie Do Bhai (Mera sundar sapna beet gaya, Yaad karoge ek din hum ko) and one from his second 1947 movie Actress (Hello, hello gentleman which happened to be the first song that Lata sang for him).

If you think that he started with a bang in the very first year, then see what is coming up in 1948:

He wrote songs for the Ramesh Saigal movie Shaheed starring Dilip Kumar, Kamini Kaushal, Chandra Mohan and Leela Chitnis. Wikipedia wrongly brings out that the songs were penned by Qamar Jalalabadi. Actually, Qamar wrote only two songs for the movie. Five songs were penned by Raja Mehdi Ali Khan and one by Naqshab Jarchvi.

Indeed, it is Raja’s song that is the most popular song of the movie. All songs were composed by Ghulam Haider:

Mere dil ki duniya pe chhane lage

In the year 1949 he didn’t have a movie to his credit.

And then, in the year 1950 he had as many as six movies whose songs he wrote. The first one was Maang. It was a movie directed by Ali Sagheer Usmani and starred Ramola Devi and Wasti.

This movie is important for my favourite singer Lata ji. She sang a duet with Shamshad Begum for the 1948 movie Actress (Hello hello gentleman). In this movie she sang her first solo for Raja: Mere dil ki duniya pe chhane lage. Indeed, this was the only song out of ten songs of the movie that he wrote. The songs were composed by Ghulam Mohammad.

Preet laga ke maine ye phal paaya….

His second movie in 1950 was Aankhen. This is really very significant in his career; this was the first movie in which he paired with Madan Mohan to make songs.

This movie was directed by Devendra Goel and starred Shekhar, Bharat Bhushan and Nalini Jaywant.

Raja Mehdi Ali Khan penned four out of eight songs in the movie. These were:

1. Preet laga ke maine ye phal paaya.
2. Ham ishq mein barbaad hain.
3. Hamse na dil ko lagaana musafir.
4. Kisi ki yaad mein ro ro ke.

I feel like giving you all four.

Now we come to a movie that has been made several times: the 1950 movie Bhai Bahen starring Bharat Bhushan and Geeta Bali.

Raja paired with Shyam Sundar again.

There were ten songs in the movie. Raja wrote four and others were penned by Ishwar Chandra Kapoor, Rajinder Krishan, and SH Bihari.

His four songs were:

2. Ham chand se ek dulhan.
3. Judai mein kisi ke geet filmi gaate phirte hain.
4. Tumko hamse pyar hai.

His next movie in 1950 was Sangram; another title that has been made several times.

Ashok Kumar and Nalini Jaywant were the lead cast.

C Ramchandra composed seven songs in the movie. These were penned by Pyarelal Santoshi and Brajendra Gaud in addition to Raja.

Raja wrote only one: Dil diya hai aapne to mehrbani aapki.

This was sung by Lata and shows how she progressed with his songs.

Dekh gagan mein kali ghata kya kehti hai

Muqaddar was his next movie in 1950. The movie starred Kishore Kumar and Nalini Jaywant and Iftekkar.

Khemchand Prakash, Bhola Shreshtha and James Singh were together as the Music Director of the movie and composers of songs. Bharat Vyas, Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, Raj Shekhar and Brindra Gaud penned nine songs, out of which Raja wrote four.

These were the four that he wrote:

1. Dekh gagan mein kali ghata kya kehti hai.
2. Jab nainon mein koi aan base.
3. Aahen bhar bhar ke tujhako yaad.
4. Jo karna hai karlo aaj.

Dil ke tukade tujhe seene se laga loon

His next movie in 1950 was Nirdhosh directed by Najam Naqvi and starring Kuldip Kaur and KN Singh.

Shyam Sundar composed ten songs of the movie out of which Raja penned six and others were by Asad Bhopali and SH Bihari. These were his six songs:

1. Dil ke tukade tujhe.
2. Dil na lagaana.
3. Maaro na nainwa ke baan.
4. Mere pi hain jahan.
5. Ae ishq hamen awaaz na de.
6. Chhammak chhallo.

By this time, Raja was just 21 years old and had fully established himself. I would say that for someone as young as he (he died at the age of 37), his lyrics were extraordinary. I single him out as one lyricist who understood the emotions of female protagonists rather well.

You would have noticed that the songs that I select of a particular lyricist are meant to show you the development of the lyricist from a sapling to a fruit bearing tree. Please recall that 14 years later, just two years before he died he would write an iconic female song: Lag jaa gale ke phir ye hasin raat ho na ho, which not only is a song by which Lata ji is remembered but also Sadhana on whom Raj Khosla made a trilogy of films.

Coming back to Nirdosh, this is a song sung by Meena Kapoor (who also sang Shailendra’s Kuchh aur zamaana kehta hai but much later in Chhoti Chhoti Baatein).

As I progress through the career of Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, you would be getting glimpses of why he is a favourite with me.

We now come to his last movie in 1950: Magroor. Cinematographer RD Mathur directed this movie, a Wadia production.

Nigar Sultana, Paidi Jairaj (a Dadasaheb Phalke award winner actor), Meena Kumari and Rehman were the lead cast of the movie.

Sajjad Hussain, Bulo C Rani and Ram Punjwani were the Music Directors of the movie. There were eight songs in the movie:

2. “Badi Bhool Huyi Tujhe Pyar” Vishni Lal Zia Sindhi

Songs 3 to 8 were all penned by Raja Mehdi Ali Khan. As an aside, I must bring out that in the best song of the movie Toot gaya hai toot gaya, Rajkumari Dubey sang with Shanshad Begum and Mohammad Rafi. She was a playback singer in her own right at that stage until by Pakeezah she stood in the queue to be taken in a chorus (to make both ends meet), was noticed by Naushad (after Ghulam Mohammad, the MD of the movie died) and was given a song by Naushad to sing in order to honour her: Najariya ki maari.

Coming back to Magroor, here we have Geeta Dutt singing for Meena Kumari.

In the last four days we covered 10 of his movies from 1947 Do Bhai to 1950 Magroor with their 43 songs, out of which I gave you 12.

His first movie in 1951 was Gumashta in which he was the Dialogue Writer too.

Datta Kargaonkar composed nine songs in the movie; two by Waheed Qureshi, one by Noor Devasi and six by Raja Mehdi Ali Khan.

Here are his six:

1. Tera gora gora gaal.

3. Kaise tum bin kategi umariya.

You have a surprise coming up now and I bet you won’t be able to believe.

I am going to give you a second song from the 1951 movie Gumashta.

First of all you must be wondering what does Gumashta mean. Well, it means a Pimp!

This song is sung by GM Durrani, Mohammad Rafi’s guru and Jagjit Kaur only with some interluding words. Do you recall Jagjit Kaur? She is the widow of recently expired Khayyam and you would be stunned by her interludes.

You would also be stunned by Datta Kargaonkar’s composition with Western music fusion including somewhere close to the end Spanish music complete with castanets.

His next movie in 1951 was Ada, a Devendra Goel movie starring Shekhar, Madan Mohan, Shantakumari, Miss Mohna and Prem Dhawan himself who was also the leading lyricist of songs that were composed by Madan Mohan. Prem Dhawan wrote four, Saraswati Kumar Deepak wrote two and Behzad Lucknavi and Raja Mehdi Ali Khan wrote one each.

The only song written by Raja also happens to be a Lata Mangeshkar song.

His next movie in 1951 was Ustad Pedro with Shaikh Mukhtar in the title role and Begum Para as Rani.

If you think Ustad Pedro was a rare name, I would like to tell you that there are any number of movies with Ustad and Pedro and a 1971 movie exactly of the same name.

The songs of the movie were composed by C Ramchandra. Raja wrote all eight of them. Most of the songs were sung by Chitalkar’s favourite singer Lata Mangeshkar and he himself and he gave only two songs to Shamshad Begum:

1. Jaane waali tadpaane waali mukhada dikha ja.
2. Kisi ko de gaye ho kya nishani.
3. Karo na ishare piya pyare (Shamshad).
4. Dil ka ye engine seetiyan maare.
5. Keechad mein ek pari se.

7. Tere dil pe jaadu kar gaya mera paan.
8. Mere husn ke charche aam huye hain gali gali.

The first one was sung by C Ramchandra and Lata. It was difficult to find this song on the net as the usual places it has been taken off!

But, persistence paid off and here it is with the kind of music C Ramchandra is fond of, eg, in Albela. Just think of Raja writing this! But, then I have already told you about his having a funny streak too!

I had promised you that I would give you two songs of the 1951 movie Ustad Pedro starring Shaikh Mukhtar in title role (he was also the producer) and Begum Para.

Raja wrote eight songs and because C Ramchandra was to compose them, he had Lata Mangeshkar in six of them (either solo or with him) and had Shamshad Begum sing two of them.

I gave you one which was delightful but difficult to find. Typical C Ramchandra music with bongos and other Western instruments.

Shamshad Begum came equal to such music and sang this one. Of course Raja too came equal to writing such lyrics.

His next movie in 1951 was Hamari Shaan, a movie directed by Balwant Bhatt featuring Durga Khote, Yakub Khan Mehboob Khan, and Bharat Bhushan.

Chitragupt composed eight songs in the movie and only one was penned by Raja.

It is important for me to give you this since it is the first time Kishore Kumar sang Raja’s lyrics though as a duet with Shamshad Begum.

On the 6th day, yesterday, we covered two movies: Ustad Pedro with eight songs and Hamari Shaan with one song. Both were 1951 movies. I gave you three of them.

Elsewhere I have already told you that the movie was based on Romeo And Juliet. It was a JBH Wadia production that was also directed by him. The movie starred Manhar Desai, Meena Kumari and Usha Kiran.

We started taking up songs of the 1951 JBH Wadia movie Madhosh and took up just one song: Meri yaad mein tum na aansu bahana and realised how beautifully Raja Mehdi Ali Khan’s relationship with Madan Mohan was shaping up.

The second song has been a discovery of mine in my series ‘Incredible Nostalgia (I.N.) Songs – Part I‘ as it showed a young Meena Kumari, in a feisty mood, singing this to the visiting son of a village zamindar. It is a teasing song and Raja and Madan Mohan did such a beautiful job of it.

I have given you two extremely nostalgic songs from the 1951 JBH Wadia movie Madhosh starring Manhar Desai, Meena Kumari and Usha Kiran.

The songs were:

1. Meri yaad mein tum na aansu bahana.
2. Pagadi pehan ke turredar akadata kyun hai.

And now I am ready for your observation: “You were, Ravi, supposed to build up to Raja and Madan Mohan relationship, which you did. However, you were also supposed to build up to Lata singing their songs but you have given only Talat, SD Batish and Shamshad Begum. Where does Lata figure in these?”

Valid observation, guys. Just hold your horses. Here we get back to Lata again.

What are the things that you remember about Raja Mehdi Ali Khan? One is that he introduced the word Aap in the songs; eg, in the 1962 movie Anpadh song: Aap ki nazaron ne samajha. The second was that he was pioneer in expressions: Here he used the expression Badardi balma and then many followed it, eg, in the 1965 movie Arzoo song: Bedardi balma tujhako mera man yaad karta hai.

This is a beautiful song in all respects: lyrics, composition and singing. Badardi balma was as much an object of love for women of that era as was Pardesi; eg, Ek pardesi mera dil le gaya.

His next movie in 1951 was Daman, a movie directed by Nanabhai Bhatt and starring Ajit, Karan Dewan, Nigar Sultana, Pran and Agha.

Raja, again, paired with Datta Kargaonkar. There were ten songs in the movie and Raja penned seven and one each by Ehsan Rizvi, Rijinder Krishan and Anjum Jaipuri.

Here are the seven songs penned by Raja:

He wrote songs for six movies in 1952. Baghdad was the first one. Once again it was a movie directed by Nanabhai Bhatt and starred Master Bhagwan, Bharati Devi, Anwar Hussain and Yashodhara Katju.

Raja wrote all eight songs in the movie that were composed by Bulo C Rani:

Lipstick lagane wale dil ko jalane wale

Out of six movies in 1952, his second movie was Nishan Danka, a movie directed by Jayant Desai and starring Shyama, Jeevan, Tabassum and Ranjan.

There were seven songs in the movie that were composed by Basant Prakash. Raja wrote two. The others were composed by Hasrat Jaipuri and SH Bihari.

The two songs by Raja were:

1. Ek do teen chaar paanch chhe.
2. Kare safachat chale khatakhat.

We shall skip both these (first time we are doing it).

Shrimatiji was his next movie in 1952 in which he continued being with Basant Prakash but together with Jimmy and S Mohinder. It was directed by IS Johar and starred IS Johar, Shyama, Nasir Khan and Majnu.

There were ten songs in the movie; eight penned by Raja and one each by Shailendra and Hasrat Jaipuri.

Here are his eight:

1. Lipstick lagane wale dil ko jalane wale.
2. O babuji main na karun teri naukri.
3. Aashiqon ko husn ne ulat palat (Part I).
4. Nain mila lo pyar ka dar hai.

HASYA PANKTIYAN OF THE DAY #65 – CHHODO AISI GOOD MORNING

Good morning देखते देखते रात के बज गए दस।
और मैंने कहा अब तो करो जी बस।

कई बार ऐसा लगता है मुझे, जैसे झाड़ियों से गुजरना होगा,
कहीं Good Morning का छुपा सांप होगा जो कभी भी लेगा डस।

या यह Internet का घना जंगल है, कॉपी पेस्ट करना है,
हम सब के सब उस में किसी तरह से गए हैं फस।

यहां यह फोटो है, वहां यह teaching है,
सब पे अमल करने को, बस कमर को लो कस।

कितना समय लगता है उसे find या discover करने में,
इतने में इकट्ठे मिल के बातें करते हम लेते हस।

दिवाली में जैसे सोन पापड़ी का डिब्बा मिला हो gift,
हमें भी उन्हें भेजना है, उन्हें भी मिले इसका रस।

सोचो जब वह भी समां था जब Good Morning सिर्फ ग्रीटिंग था,
दूसरों के टाइम पे हमें आता था तरस।

अब तो यूं लगता है सारे Good Morning पढ़ने के लिए,
दिन और महीने क्यूं, बीत जाएंगे कई बरस।

सोचिए कभी आपने अपना कहीं कभी लिखा है क्या,
या net से लेके forward करते आप हो गए हैं बेकस?

बात बात पे समझती हैं मुझे गुनहगार,
पर कहती हैं यही तो है सच्चा प्यार।

चेहरा रहता है लाल जैसे चढ़ा हो बुखार,
पर फिर भी कहती हैं उन्हें है प्यार।

सर हिला के हर चीज़ को करती हैं इनकार,
पर इसमें शक नहीं उन्हें है बहुत प्यार।

डांट खाने पे हम रोते हैं ज़ार ज़ार,
चलो कम से कम उन्हें हमसे है प्यार।

कभी देती हैं ललकार, कभी देती हैं दुत्कार,
कहती है सिर्फ हम से ही है उन्हें प्यार।

HASYA PANKTIYAN OF THE DAY #64 – SINGING FEST MEIN GUEST

हाल में दिल्ली में गानों का फेस्ट किया,
दो तरह के लोग वहां नज़र आए।
एक कहने लगे यह सबसे बेस्ट हुआ,
दूसरे जिन्हें रंज था वह कुछ सुना न पाए।

फेस्ट में जो सुनने सुनाने आए थे, हज़ूर,
उनकी तो तकरीबन पूरी हो गई आस।
लेकिन जो सिर्फ अपने ही सुनाने में थे मगरुर,
वह थे गुस्से में और बहुत उदास।

कइयों को यूं लगता था जब तक न गाएं बीस,
लोग उन्हें न समझेंगे अच्छा गायक।
बाद में फिर भी छूट जाते हैं कई आयटम पीस,
कोई हिस्से दार उन्हें न लगे अपने लायक।

मूंह में लगे तीन सोराखों की यह कहानी है,
कइयों के बीच के खुलने से बगल वाले होते है बन्द।
कुछ भी कहो बात तो यह पुरानी है,
मस्कीन की ही आवाज़ सब को आती है पसंद।

अगली दफा आप मशगूल हों किसी फेस्ट में,
अपने कानों का भी करिए खूब इस्तेमाल,
गला फाड़ फाड़ गाना नहीं लगता अच्छा गेस्ट में,
चाहे हों काले काले बाल और लाल लाल गाल।

सुनो और सुनने दो इतनी ही अच्छी कहावत है,
जैसे है जियो और जीने दो की बुनियाद।
दूसरों के गाने पे गर तुम्हें कोई शिकायत है,
लोग तुम्हें भी फेस्ट के बाद न करेंगे याद।

माना डू और डाई बहुत अच्छा इरादा है,
पर सिंग और डाई नहीं है ठीक।
लोग यह न कहें यह बहुत ज़्यादा है,
वह भी तो हैं फेस्ट में शरीक।

NA THUKRAYEN ISE

ज़िन्दगी क्या क्या हमें सिखाती है,
हंसते हंसते आंख भर आती है।

मिलने को कभी उन्हें वक़्त नहीं मिलता,
दफअतन ज़िन्दगी ही गुज़र जाती है।

वो जो दिन थे जिन से हम बहुत थे मायूस,
एक दिन उन्हें ही पाने के लिए तरसाती है।

क्यूं न थाम लें वह वक़्त जिस पर होगा नाज़ बाद में,
अक्सर तनहाई में उनकी याद सताती है।

वह जो रहगुजर है प्यार की कल हो न हो,
वीरान हुई तो रह रह के हमें बुलाती है।

आंख है, यह लबों से भी उम्दा बोलती है,
बस कोई सुनने वाला हो जो यह सुनाती है।

दिखती है हमेशा मासूम, कमज़ोर और नादान,
सदियों का बोझ ज़िन्दगी ही तो उठाती है।

ज़िन्दगी है, हम कहते हैं क्या है यह, रवि,
हर रोज़, हर पल, यह हमें समझाती है।

First in Punjabi

ਕਈ ਓਹਨਾ ਨੂੰ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਸੀ ਬਾਬਾ,
ਕਈ ਓਹਨਾ ਨੂੰ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਸੀ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਫਕੀਰ।
ਸਭ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਗਲ ਦਾ ਸੀ ਏਹਸਾਸ,
ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੀ ਰੱਬ ਦੀ ਤਸਵੀਰ।

ਅੱਜ ਓਹਨਾ ਦੇ ੫੫੦ ਵੇਂ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਉਤਸਵ ਤੇ,
ਓਹਨਾ ਦੇ ਕੁਛ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਕਰੀਏ ਯਾਦ।
ਅੱਜ ਤਕ ਉਹ ਸਭ ਲਈ ਉਚਿਤ ਨੇ,
ਸਾਡੇ ਪੰਜ ਸੌ ਸਾਲਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਵੀ ਬਾਅਦ।

ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਹੈ ਓਹਨਾ ਚੀਜ਼ਾਂ ਦਾ ਖੰਡਣ,
ਜਿਹੜੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਸਿਰਫ ਪਦਾਰਥਕ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਕ।
ਬਾਲਕ ਨਾਨਕ ਨੇ ਜਨੇਊ ਪਹਿਨਣ ਤੋਂ ਕੀਤਾ ਇਨਕਾਰ,
ਰਿਤੀਵਾਦੀ ਚੀਜ਼ਾਂ ਚ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਨ ਕਰੋ ਸ਼ਰੀਕ।

ਤਿਨ ਦਿਨ ਕਾਲੀ ਨਦੀ ਦੀ ਸਮਾਧੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ,
ਓਹਨਾ ਨੇ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਨੂੰ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡਾ ਸਬਕ ਸਿਖਾਇਆ।
ਏਕ ਓਮਕਾਰ ਹੈ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਰੱਬ,
ਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਆਪਣਾ ਤੇ ਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਪਰਾਇਆ।

ਆਪਣੇ ਦੋਨੋ ਪੁੱਤਾਂ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਚੰਦ ਤੇ ਲਕਸ਼ਮੀ ਚੰਦ ਨੂੰ,
ਵੰਡ ਛਕੋ, ਕੀਰਤ ਕਰੋ ਅਤੇ ਨਾਮ ਜਪੋ ਦਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼।
ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਪੰਜ ਉਦਾਸੀਆਂ ਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਨੇ,
ਇਹਨਾ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਚਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਦੇਸ਼ ਵਿਦੇਸ਼।

ਭਾਈ ਲਾਲੋ ਗਰੀਬ ਲੇਕਿਨ ਇਮਾਨਦਾਰ ਦੀ ਰੋਟੀ ਚੋਂ,
ਓਹਨਾ ਨੇ ਦੁੱਧ ਕੱਢ ਕੇ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ।
ਲੇਕਿਨ ਅਮੀਰ ਤੇ ਬੇਰਹਿਮ ਮਲਿਕ ਭਾਗੋ ਦੀ ਰੋਟੀ ਤੋਂ,
ਲਾਲ ਲਾਲ ਖੂਨ ਓਹਨਾ ਨੇ ਕੱਢ ਵੇਖਲਾਇਆ।

ਜਗਨਨਾਥ ਪੁਰੀ ਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਆਰਤੀ ਦਾ ਸਬਕ,
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਲਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਚਿਤ ਤੇ ਸੁੰਦਰ।
ਗਗਨ ਮੇਂ ਥਾਲ ਰਵਿ ਚੰਦ ਦੀਪਕ,
ਦੀ ਆਰਤੀ ਕਰਕੇ ਜਾਣਾ ਨ ਪਏ ਕਿਸੀ ਵੀ ਮੰਦਰ।

ਹੋਰ ਬਹੁਤ ਨੇ ਅਣਗਿਣਤ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼,
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਿਲਦੇ ਨੇ ਓਹਨਾ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਵਿਸਤਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ,
ਸੱਚਾ ਸੌਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਤੇਰਹ ਤੇਰਹ ਕਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਵੀ,
ਬਾਜਰਾ ਕਿਉਂ ਨਾ ਘਟ ਹੋਇਆ ਬਾਜ਼ਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ?

ਓਹਨਾ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਉਤਸਵ ਮਨਾਉਣ ਲਈ,
ਸਾਡੇ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਲਈ ਇਹ ਹੀ ਹੈ ਵਧੀਆ ਤਰਕੀਬ।
ਆਪਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਚ ਓਹਨਾ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਨੂੰ ਅਪਣਾਈਏ,
ਅਤੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਅਸੀਂ ਵੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਈਏ ਕਰੀਬ।

ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇ ਗੁਰਪੁਰਬ ਨੂੰ ਅੱਜ ਦੇ ਦਿਨ,
ਚਲੋ ਉਸ ਦਰੱਖਤ ਥੱਲੇ ਬੈਠੀਏ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਓਹਨਾ ਨੇ ਬੋਇਆ।
ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਜੀ, ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਪਰਗਟਿਆ,
ਮਿੱਟੀ ਧੁੰਦ ਜਗ ਚਾਨਣ ਹੋਇਆ।

Kayi ohna nu kehnde si Baba,

Hor bahut ne anginat updesh,
jehde milde ne ohna de jeevan de vistaar vich.
Sachcha Sauda ate terah terah karan tonh baad vi,
Baajra kyun na ghat hoyiya bazaar vich?

Ohna da prakash utsav manayun layi,
Saade sareyan layi eh hi hai vadhiya tarkeeb.
Aapne jeevan ch ohna diyan sikhiyan nu apnayiye,
Ate Waheguru de asin vi ho jayiye kareeb.

Guru Nanak de Gurpurab nu ajj de din,,
Chalo us drakhat the thalle baithiye jehda ohna ne boya.
Saadh Sangat ji, Satguru Nanak pragateya,
Mitti dhund jag channan hoya.

And finally the Translation

Some used to call him Baba,
Some used to call him Shah Fakir.
All felt one thing common,
Guru Nanak was the picture of God.

Today on his 550th Birth Anniversary,
Lets recall some of his teachings.
These are still relevant for all of us,
Even after five and a half centuries later.

First is how he denigrated those things,
Which are only material symbols.
Boy Nanak refused to wear the Janeyu,
He asked not to be included in mere rituals.

After spending three days in Kali Nadi (Black River),
He gave the world the biggest preaching:
One God is everyone’s God,
He isn’t yours alone.

To both his sons Sri Chand and Lakshmi Chand,
He preached Vand chhako (Share with others in need), Kirat karo (Earn or make a living honestly without fraud or exploitation) and Naam japo (Meditate on God’s name).
During his five Udasis (Travels) the Guru,
Such preaching he gave within India and abroad.

From the roti of Bhai Lallo who was poor but honest,
He showed milk flowing out.
But from the roti of rich but cruel Malik Bhago,
He produced red blood.

In Jagannath Puri he gave the lesson of Aarti,
I find it apt and beautiful:
Gagan mein thal ravi chand deepak (The sun and moon, O Lord, are thy lamps)
With this Aarti there won’t be a need to visit any temple (as one can connect directly with God).

There are many more countless teachings,
That we can find in his biography.
Even after Sachcha Sauda and terah terah of his,
Why didn’t the grains get less in the market?

For celebrating his birthday,
All of us have the best approach.
In adopting in our life his (Nanak’s) teachings.
And with that we can be closer to Waheguru.

On this day of Guru Nanak’s Gurpurab,
Lets sit in the shade of the tree he sowed as a seed.
Respected saintly gathering, with the emergence of the complete Guru, Guru Nanak,
the worldly mist was cleared and the whole world was illuminated.

DOST HAI TO SAB KUCHH HAI

दोस्तों के बग़ैर ज़िन्दगी वीरान है,
जिसे दोस्त नहीं चाहिए वह कैसा इन्सान है?

दोस्त होने से हमें हौंसला मिलता है,
कोई तो हमसफ़र है, कोई हम ज़ुबान है।

हमने तो बहुत कुछ पाया है दोस्तों की वजह से,
जहां हम पहुंचें हैं यह दोस्तों का ही एहसान है।

रोते रोते कट जाएं तनहाई के दिन और रातें,
दोस्त है तो रौनक है, होंठों पे मुस्कान है।

दोस्त की कदर करो, यह है खुदा की बख़्शिश,
शुक्र करो खुदा का जब दोस्त मेहरबान है।

थोड़ी सी आपकी ज़रूरत पे वह पहाड़ उठा देगा,
आप हो अगर लक्ष्मण तो वह भी हनुमान है।

और क्या लिखूं, रवि, सब तो जानते हैं,
कौन ऐसा शख्स है जो उसकी खूबियों से अनजान है?

HASYA PANKTIYAN OF THE DAY #61 – DOOR ANDESHI PLANNING COMMISSION

एक वक़्त था वह दूर – अंदेशी वह बनते जा रहे थे,
यूं कहिए अपने सामने रखी चीज़ न देख पा रहे थे।

सरकार को जैसे ही उनकी कब्लियत का पता चला।
प्लैनिंग कमीशन का चेयरमैन उनको बना रहे थे।

उनके बड़े भाई मौसम विभाग के थे डायरेक्टर,
खुश्क दिन का ऐलान करके बिना छाते के बारिश में नहा रहे थे।

प्लैनिंग कमीशन में सबसे बड़ी खोज थी उनकी पॉवर्टी लाइन पे।
सिर्फ २६ रुपए ४० पैसे से कम वालों को गरीब बता रहे थे।

पांच वर्षीय योजना की नुमाइशी कामयाबी कुछ इस तरह की थी,
पहली योजना के टारगेट पांचवीं में भी फिट आ रहे थे।

शुक्र है अब बारहमी प्लान के खत्म हो जाने से पहले ही,
उनके मातम का ब्युग्ल सब मिल के बजा रहे थे।

Secular, Democratic, Planning और Welfare कुछ ऐसे लफ्ज़ थे इंडियन डिक्शनरी में,
अपने आप न समझ के हम दूसरों को समझा रहे थे।

भई, सारी की सारी कमीशन या गौरमेंट को पता न था,
कहां से हम आ रहे थे और कहां हम जा रहे थे?

ZINDAGI BANAYEN ASAAN

ज़िन्दगी को न हर वक़्त बनाए रखिए संजीदा,
ज़िन्दगी में मज़ाक ढूंडना भी बहुत खूब है अदा।

भगवान का कभी यह इरादा नहीं हो सकता,
सभी उसके बंदे गहरे खयाल में रहेंगे सदा।

थोड़ा सा मुस्करा के उसे खिलता सा चेहरा दिखाना,
खुदा जब तुमसे पूछे अब आगे क्या है रज़ा।

आपके इस अंदाज़ से बहुत मुद्दे हो जाएंगे हल,
वो भी जो शुरू में लगते थे बहुत पेचीदा।

ज़िन्दगी अनमोल है, हर वक़्त परेशानी में न गंवाइए,
बहुत कुछ दिया खुदा ने, हमने ज़राफत को खरीदा।

सड़क पे जा रही थी बिल्ली अपने नन्हे बच्चों के साथ,
काले कोट पैंट में आदमी क्रॉस किया, फाइल थी उसके हाथ।

बच्चों को बिल्ली ने रोका: लगता है यह तो वकील।
इसने रस्ता क्रॉस किया तो अपशुगन होगा, अाई फील।

“मम्मी” पहले किटन ने कहा, “वकील ही तो है बेचारा।”
बिल्ली बोली, “ऐसी नादानी फिर न सोचना दोबारा।”

“जिनका भी रस्ता इसने कभी भी किया है क्रॉस,
लाइफ उन सब की हैस गॉन फॉर ए टॉस।”

“लोग क्रॉसिंग बिल्लियों को समझते हैं बैड लक,
पर बच्चो, मेरी लाइफ का एक्सपीरियंस कहता है WTF.”

“सब लोग कहते हैं बिल्लियां और लोमड़ियां होती हैं चालाक,
पर वकील तो हम सबको भी पकड़ा देगा ख़ाक।”

“हमारा केस यह लटका देगा अगले बीस या तीस साल,
और कहेगा फैसला होने ही वाला है तत्काल।”

“बटोर बटोर के जो भी मिला है हमको इस लाइफ में,
उसको देंगे फीस और हमारी ज़िन्दगी कटेगी स्ट्राइफ में।”

“मम्मी” दूसरा किटन बोला, “बहुत इंग्लिश वर्ड्स यू युज।”
बिल्ली बोली, “हाहा, सुनो वकील को, साउंड्स लाइक अब्यूज।”

हालांकि, normally, curiosity kills the cat,
पर वकील के बारे सुनके सब सड़क पे लेट गए फ्लैट।

जैसे danger चला गया वह उठ के फिर से भागे,
ताकि सड़क पे कोई और वकील न मिल जाए उनको आगे।

बिल्ली का कहा हुआ हम सब के लिए है हस्ब ए हाल,
वकील से बचा के रखिए हमेशा जान और माल।

PAAS RAHIYE HAMESHA

जिन्हें पास होना चाहिए वह दूर रहते हैं,
हम सब इन्सान क्यूं इतना मजबूर रहते हैं?

इधर से ही सबको गुजरना है एक दिन,
पर अभी दूर हैं तो हम सब मगरुर रहते हैं।

शबाब है, पैसा है, कामयाबी भी कदम चूमती है,
आंखों में किस किस तरह के सरूर रहते हैं।

कहते हैं हम भी कुछ हैं, कुछ नाम है हमारा,
वरना ऐसे तो न हम इतने मशहूर रहते हैं।

ऐसे में किस को इसका होता है एहसास,
एक दिन सारे ख्वाब सारे मनसूबे चूर रहते हैं।

जिन्होंने इस राज़ को समझ लिया, रवि,
वो खुदा की पनाह में ज़रूर रहते हैं।

शुक्र है खुदा तेरा, जिस हाल में भी हम रहें,
तेरे इरादों से हम हमेशा मंज़ूर रहते हैं।

HASYA PANKTIYAN OF THE DAY #59 – LONG LIVE INDIAN FREEDOM

मच्छर, मक्खी और चूहों की हुई इमरजेंसी कॉन्फ्रेंस,
स्वच्छ भारत का मोदी कर रहे हैं इंतज़ाम।
अगर हिन्दुस्तानियों को आ गई यह सिविक सेंस,
तो हम सब का तो हो जाएगा काम तमाम।

हर साल देश वासियों की insect welfare स्कीम से,
हमारी तादाद बढ़ती ही जा रही है,
डाक्टर और कैमिस्ट बहुत खुश हैं इस सोशल थीम से,
उनकी झोली में और इनकम आ रही है।

उनकी दयालुता से हम बहुत मुत्मइन हैं,
गंदगी फैलाने वाले इंडियन हमारे हैं अन्नदाता।
कचरा फैंकने, खुले में संडास में वह इतने लीन हैं,
हमारे काबीले के सब कीड़े मकोड़ों का गुज़ारा हो जाता।

अगर मोदी इस में कहीं हो गए कामयाब,
तो हम सब लोग कहीं के न रहेंगे।
कुछ करने के लिए मोदी बहुत हैं बेताब,
उनकी बेरहमी हम सह नहीं सकेंगे।

इतने में एक चूहा, बड़ा और होशियार,
उठा अपनी राए सुनाने के लिए।
मोदी की किसी स्कीम को opposition न होने देगी कामयाब,
और देशवासी नहीं हैं देश बनाने के लिए।

कूड़ा करकट फैंकना उनकी आज़ादी का है निशान,
एक मोदी क्या करेगा बेचारा?
बरसों बाद हम जरासीम बने रहेंगे सुल्तान,
हिन्दुस्तानियों का हमको बहुत है सहारा।

कई साल बाद वह चूहा साबित हुआ ठीक,
भारत कभी भी स्वच्छ ना हो पाया।
इंडियंस कीड़े मकोड़ों में हैं शरीक,
जोर से सब ने मिलके यह नारा लगाया:

“हमने पाई है ऐसी आज़ादी,
बढ़ती जा रही है हमारी आबादी।”

YEH BHI MANN KI BAAT

राह तो बिल्कुल सीधी है,
मोड़ तो सारे मन के हैं।
कशमकश हमारे अंदर है,
हर तरफ इरादे अमन के हैं।

आंखे देखती हैं ख़ाक ओ ज़मीन,
पर दिलकश फूल चमन के हैं।
उदास और तन्हा क्यूं रहते हो,
जब सारे आसार मिलन के हैं?

मरने की बातें न करो कभी,
जब रंग ओ नूर जीवन के हैं।
मायूस अंधेरे में क्यूं रहते हो,
उजाले सूरज की किरण के हैं?

ऐसे तो दिल छोटा न करो,
सब फल तुम्हारी लगन के हैं।
आंखें बंद करके झुक के देखो,
हर क्षण प्रभु के सिमरन के हैं।

कितना कुछ दिया है रब्ब ने,
फ़िर क्यूं ये पल उलझन के हैं?
गर मन ही हमें उदास बनाए,
तो खुशी के लम्हे भी मन के हैं।
