THE BEST SONGS OF MAJROOH SULTANPURI – PART I

By the time you see a song in a movie, it goes through various steps:

  1. Its lyrics are written by the lyricist much before the movie is shot and then released.
  2. The lyrics are composed into a song by the composer who is often the music director too. Often #1 and #2 are reversed in that the composer gives a tune to lyricist to write lyrics on.
  3. The arranger (associated with the MD) gives background music.
  4. The director then directs the enacting of the song through the actors. In case it is a dance number, the choreographer comes in too. Cinematographer shoot the song on the camera.
  5. Finally, the movie is put together by the editor in concert with the director.

In all the steps above, my favourite part of the song is its lyrics; the direct representation of emotions through words.

I am fond of calling myself a lyrical man; words of the songs are often the most important part of the songs for me. Indeed, on the Facebook I have a page titled ‘Lyrical’ to honour and pay tribute to various lyricists. I have several (almost a dozen) posts on  my blog on my favourite lyricist and poet Shakeel Badayuni.

So far, on Lyrical, I have taken up four lyricists of great fame:

1. Shailendra. The opening song that I selected was Kuchh aur zamaana kehta hai.
2. Rajinder Krishan with his Mujhase mat poochh mere ishq mein.
3. Kaifi Azmi with his Jaane kyaa dhoondati rehati hain ye aankhen mujh mein.
4. Sahir Ludhianvi with Aurat ne janam diya mardon ko.

Tonight we take up Majrooh Sultanpuri‘s, the third most prolific lyricist in Hindi movies after Sameer and Anand Bakshi.

Majrooh is the fifth of our lyricists who was a contemporary of Shakeel Badayuni. Out of all these six (*including Shakeel), three have been from Uttar Pradesh, which says something about that region producing some great poets and lyricists.

Majrooh Sultanpuri was born on 01 Oct 1919 as Asrar ul Hassan Khan in a Tarin Pashtun family, in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh. His father was an officer in the police department, but, preferred to send his son for traditional madrasa (Urdu school) rather than provide him with English schooling.

He tried his hand at being a quack until he was noticed in a mushaira in Sultanpur.

He was a disciple of the great Urdu poet Jigar Moradabadi. When he visited Bombay in 1945 to participate in a mushaira, the director Abdul Rashid Kardar noticed him and invited him to write for the movies. Majrooh turned it down as he looked down upon movies! He was persuaded through his mentor Jigar Moradabadi and then there was no turning back.

Many traditionalists of the Urdu literature, however, felt that Majrooh sold his soul to the Hindi films and that he could have emerged a great poet in the likeness of Ghalib and Jigar.

The takhalus Majrooh means “injured” or “wounded”.

Majrooh was awarded, in 1993, the highest award – Dadasaheb Phalke award – for his lifetime contribution towards lyrics and poetry. He was the first lyricist ever to be given that award. For the film Dosti, that made Laxmikant Pyarelal famous, he was awarded the Filmfare Best Lyricist Award for the song: Chahunga main tujhe saanjh savere.

These posts are a compilation of my posts on my page Lyrical with additional information thrown in.

Song #1
Teri aankhon ke siwa duniya mein rakha kyaa hai

For someone who didn’t want to join Hindi movies, Majrooh emerged as a natural lyricist, very popular, very romantic without too deep poetry. I won’t like to compare him with Shakeel since Shakeel maintained the purity of Urdu lyrics and traditional Urdu poetry style.

Most of Majrooh’s songs are of Dil vil pyaar vyaar main kyaa jaanu, Baahon mein chale aao, Bangle ke peechhe, Ye raaten ye mausam nadi ka kinaara, and Dekho mausam kyaa bahaar hai. However, some of his lyrics are still comparable to Shakeel’s such as Hui shaam unaka khayaal aa gaya, Woh jo milate the kabhi, Rahe na rahe ham, Chhupa lo youn dil mein pyaar mera, Tu kahe agar jeevan bhar main geet sunaata jaayun, Mujhe dard-e-dil ka pata na tha, Hamaare baad ab mehfil mein afsaane bayaan honge, and the great song on eyes: Teri aankhon ke siwa duniya mein rakha kyaa hai.

The last one is from the 1969 movie Chirag. Hats off to Majrooh for writing this at the age of fifty! Hats off to Madan Mohan too for having composed it in Raag Jhinjhoti, the raag named after an apsara. There are two versions of this song: Mohammad Rafi singing for Sunil Dutt and Lata Mangeshkar singing for Asha Parekh.

To know all about the song and how it came about please read ‘Raaga Based Song Of The Day #96‘.

The lyrics are exquisite and each word hangs on the notes of the composition like raindrops from green leaves.

Please enjoy: Teri aankhon ke siwa duniya mein rakha kyaa hai….

terii aa.Nkho.n ke sivaa duniyaa me.n rakkhaa kyaa hai
ye uThe.n subah chale, ye jhuke.n shaam Dhale
meraa jiinaa meraa maranaa inhii.n palako.n ke tale

(Rafi)

(Lata)

inake sivaa ab to kuchh bhii nazar mujhako aataa nahii.n
ye uThe.n subah chale …

Song #2
Hui shaam unaka khayaal aa gaya

We have just started taking up our fifth lyricist in the Great Lyricists series: Majrooh Sultanpuri. He was the first recipient of Dadasaheb Phalke award for a lyricist in 1993. Later too only two other lyricists got the award: Kavi Pradeep in 1997 and Gulzar in 2013.

On the first day, as is usual for me, I give the best of the songs of the lyricists, especially those comparable with my favourite Shakeel Badayuni. We just took up Teri aankhon ke siwa duniya mein rakha kyaa hai.

Hui shaam unka khayal aa gaya is another one in which he poured his heart out. The 1968 movie Mere Hamdam Mere Dost starred Dharmendra and Sharmila Tagore, a pair first discovered by Hrishikesh Mukherjee who never got tired of saying that in them he discovered a pair that should be the best in Hindi movies.

Mere Hamdam Mere Dost was an Amar Kumar movie still remembered for its super hit songs made by Majrooh and Laxmikant Pyarelal.

Mohammad Rafi sang this song for Dharmendra (one of his best too) when the latter breaks up with Sharmila Tagore accusing her for deceiving him into believing that she was poor like him whereas she turned out to be a multi-millionaire’s daughter.

In this song, however, after taking to drinking in a huge manner, he bemoans that he cannot get rid of her khayaal!

Please enjoy: Hui shaam unaka khayaal aa gaya….

huii shaam un kaa Kayaal aa gayaa
vahii zi.ndagii kaa savaal aa gayaa

abhii tak to ho.nTho.n pe thaa tabassum kaa ek silasilaa
bahut shaadamaa.n the ham unako bhulaakar
achaanak ye kyaa ho gayaa
ki chehare pe ra.ng-e-malaal aa gayaa …

hame.n to yahii thaa guruur gam-e-yaar hai ham se duur
vahii Gam jise hamane kis-kis jatan se
nikaalaa thaa is dil se duur
vo chalakar qayaamaat kii chaal aa gayaa …

Song #3
Chhupa lo youn dil mein pyaar mera

If Hui shaam unaka khayaal aa gaya is eminently suitable for an evening song, so is the third best of his that I have taken. It is from the 1966 movie Mamta, arguably the best role performed by Suchitra Sen that matches Nargis’s role of a forced by circumstances courtesan in Adalat.

Roshan has composed it with great sensitivity. Lata Mangeshkar and Hemant Kumar have sung it as one of their immortal duets, at par with a great such as Aa neele gagan tale.

Roshan composed it in the Raaga of the evening: Raag Kalyan, Taal Kaherava.

Please enjoy: Chhupa lo youn dil mein pyaar mera….

chhupaa lo yuu.N dil me.n pyaar meraa
ke jaise ma.ndir me.n lau diye kii

tum apane charaNo.n me.n rakh lo mujhako
tumhaare charaNo.n kaa phuul huu.N mai.n
mai.n sar jhukaae kha.Dii huu.N priyatam – 2
ke jaise ma.ndir me.n lau diye kii

ye sach hai jiinaa thaa paap tum bin
ye paap maine kiyaa hai ab tak
magar hai man me.n chhavi tumhaarii – 2
ke jaise ma.ndir me.n lau diye kii

phir aag birahaa kii mat lagaanaa
ke jalake mai.n raakh ho chukii huu.N
ye raakh maathe pe maine rakh lii – 2
ke jaise ma.ndir me.n lau diye kii

Song #4
Jab dil hi toot gaya

We started with our fifth great lyricist in the Great Lyricists series yesterday: Majrooh Sultanpuri. As is often the case, on the first day, I merely give what I feel are the three best songs of the lyricist. My choices were: Teri aankhon ke siwa, Hui shaam unaka khayal aa gaya, and Chhupa lo youn dil mein pyaar mera.

As I posted these, one of the fans brought out that I am biased in favour of Shakeel Badayuni and that Majrooh was equally good, if not better. Here is what I wrote in response:

“I have no quarrel with that! When one has a favourite, one is partial! It can be proved, despite contrary beliefs, that Love is the most selfish feeling on earth since you love someone to the exclusion of others! I like Majrooh too and I am actually posting his songs as a tribute to him in Great Lyricists Series. But, I love Shakeel. With you, as you have mentioned, it is the other way round.

I remember when a poet was asked as to what did he see in a woman that he loved and called the most beautiful woman on earth when she looked so ordinary, he replied, “It is because you are seeing her with your eyes and not mine!”

Abdul Rashid Kardar gave break to Majrooh and later to Shakeel

As I brought out last night, Majrooh was a reluctant entrant into Hindi movies having been noticed by Abdul Rashid Kardar in a mushaira in Bombay. Kardar signed him up for the 1946 movie Shahjehan starring the first super-star of the Hindi movies: KL Saigal. By the way, Shahjehan had a story penned by Kamal Amrohi and the story was about a fictional incident in the reign of Shahjehan.

As with Shakeel’s first movie Dard one year later, the composer was Naushad.

Majrooh penned the following songs for the movie:

1. Jab dil hi toot gaya.
2. Gam diye mustaqil.
3. Jab usne gesu bikhraaye.
4. Chaah barbaad karegi.
5. Mere sapno ki rani Ruhi Ruhi Ruhi.
6. Jawani ke daaman ko rangeen bana le.
7. Aag lagi dil mein.
8. Kar liye chal kar.

Two other songs were penned by Khumar Barabankawi.

Majrooh’s first song in the Hindi movies became super popular. Sung by Kl Saigal himself, it was composed by Naushad in Raag Bhairavi, Taal Kaherava. Even till to date, it is counted amongst the best of KL Saigal songs.

Please enjoy: Jab dil hi toot gaya….

jab dil hii TuuT gayaa, jab dil hii TuuT gayaa
ham jii ke kyA kare.nge, ham jii ke kyA kare.nge
jab dil hii TuuT gayaa – 2

ulafat kA diyaa hamane, is dil me.n jalaayaa thA – 2
ummiid ke phuulo.n se, is ghar ko sajaayaa thA – 2
ik bhedii luuT gayaa, ik bhedii luuT gayaa
ham jii ke kyA kare.nge, ham jii ke kyA kare.nge
jab dil hii TuuT gayaa

(maaluum nA thA itanI, mushkil hai.n merI raahe.n
mushkil hai.n merI raahe.n ) – 2
aramaa.n ke bahe aa.Nsuu, hasarat ne bharii.n aahe.n – 2
har sAthI chhuuT gayaa, har sAthI chhuuT gayaa
ham jii ke kyA kare.nge, ham jii ke kyA kare.nge
jab dil hii TuuT gayaa

Song #5
Gham diye mustaqil

(Courtesy: Cinestaan)Gham diye mustaqil

We have just started taking up songs of Majrooh’s first Hindi movie: Shahjehan starring KL Saigal. The movie was directed by AR Kardar.

The second superhit song from the movie has also been sung by KL Saigal on a composition by Naushad.

Please enjoy: Gham diye mustaqil…..

Gam diye mustaqil, kitanaa naazuk hai dil, ye na jaanaa
haay haay ye zaalim zamaanaa

de uThe daag lau unase ai maah-e-nau kah sunanaa
haay haay ye zaalim zamaanaa

dil ke haatho.n se daaman chhu.Daakar
Gam kii nazaro.n se nazare.n bachaakar
uThake vo chal diye, kahate hii rah gaye ham fasaanaa
haay haay ye zaalim zamaanaa

koii merii ye ruudaad dekhe, ye mohabbat kii bedaad dekhe
phuk rahaa hai jigar, pa.D rahaa hai magar muskuraanaa
haay haay ye zaalim zamaanaa

*Bedaad: iniquity (injustice)

Gam diye mustaqil, kitanaa naazuk hai dil, ye na jaanaa
haay haay ye zaalim zamaanaa

Song #6
Chah barbaad karegi hamen maloom na tha

A scene from the 1946 movie Shahjehan starring KL Saigal

As if two super hit songs in his very first movie were not enough, Majrooh topped it up with a third one too from 1946 AR Kardar movie Shahjehan starring KL Saigal; the movie based on a fictional incident in the life of the emperor. The story was written by Kamal Amrohi.

The third super hit song of the movie was also put together by Majrooh, Naushad and KL Saigal. Naushad, the undisputed master of Raaga based songs, composed it in Raag Bageshri, Tal Dadra.

Gair to Gair hii the vah bhii hamaare na rahe
hamape aisii bhii pa.Degii hame.n maaluum na thaa (2)
chaah barbaad karegii hame.n maaluum na thaa

Song #7
Tu kahe agar jeevan bhar main geet sunata jaayun

Third day of taking up songs of Lyricist #5 (Not in any particular order or ranking) in our Great Lyricists series. The first day, at random, we took up three of his best written songs. The second day we started chronologically and took up three super hit songs from his first movie, the 1946 movie Shahjehan; all three having been composed by Naushad: Jab dil hi toot gaya, Gham diye mustaqil and Chah barbaad karegi.

Lets go on from there.

Whilst he was celebrating the super success of the songs of his very first movie, Majrooh fell ill and had to return to North from the polluting atmosphere of Mumbai. Hence, in the next three years he didn’t write any songs. In 1949 when he returned to pen songs for Mehboob Khan’s movie Andaz starring Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor and Nargis, he was arrested for his anti-establishment views (many Urdu poets and writers of that era had communist leanings). He was asked to apologise and he refused. So he was jailed for two years and it was during this period that his daughter was born!

(Courtesy: en.wikipedia.org)

Anyway, returning to Andaz, the songs of this movie are dear to me for two reasons: one that many of them were shot in my home-station Shimla and secondly, these were composed by Naushad.

Here is a list of songs of the movie:

1 Jhoom Jhoom Ke Nacho Aaj Mukesh Naushad Prem Dhawan
2 Koi Mere Dil Mein Lata Mangeshkar Naushad Majrooh Sultanpuri
3 Hum Aaj Kahin Dil Kho Baithe Mukesh Naushad Majrooh Sultanpuri
4 Meri Ladli Re Lata Mangeshkar & Chorus Naushad Majrooh Sultanpuri
5 Tu Kahe Agar Mukesh Naushad Majrooh Sultanpuri
6 Uthaye Ja Unke Sitam Lata Mangeshkar Naushad Majrooh Sultanpuri
7 Toote Na Dil Toote Na Mukesh Naushad Majrooh Sultanpuri
8 Tod Diya Dil Mera Lata Mangeshkar Naushad Majrooh Sultanpuri
9 Yun To Aapas Mein Bigadte Hain Lata Mangeshkar & Mohammad Rafi Naushad Majrooh Sultanpuri
10 Dar Na Mohabbat Karle Lata Mangeshkar & Shamshad Begum Naushad Majrooh Sultanpuri

Naturally, Mukesh singing for Dilip Kumar (Song #5) is the best song of the movie. It has been picturised during Nargis’s birthday party in Shimla. He would come to know only later that she was only being nice to him; else, she was in love with Raj Kapoor!

Please enjoy: Tu kahe agar jeevan bhar main geet sunata jaayun…..

tuu kahe agar, tuu kahe agar
tuu kahe agar jiivan bhar
mai.n giit sunaataa jaaU.n
man biin bajaataa jaaU.n
tuu kahe agar

mai.n saaz huu.N tuu saragam hai – 2
detii jaa sahaare mujhako – 2
mai.n raag huu.N tU bINaa hai – 2
is dam jo pukaare tujhako
aavaaz me.n terI har dam
aavaaz milaataa jaauu.n
aakaash pe chhaataa jaauu.n
tU kahe agar…

in bolo.n me.n, tuu hii tuu hai
mai.n samajhuu.N yaa tuu jaane, ho jaane
iname.n hai kahaanii merii, iname.n hai tere afasaane
iname.n hai tere afasaane
tU saaz uThaa ulfat kaa
mai.n jhuum ke gaataa jaauu.n
sapano.n ko jagaataa jaauu.n
tuu kahe agar…

Song #8
Uthaye ja unake sitam

The next one is an Aansu song (for the YKDN Fest starting tomorrow) but I can’t help it; it just falls chronologically.

On Raj Kapoor’s return, initially, it starts happily.

Finally, the story takes a turn (I am talking about 1949 movie Andaz) whose songs we have just started taking up. Nargis, in Shimla, having led Dilip Kumar to believe that she was interested in him, has her erstwhile lover Raj Kapoor return from England and she marries him. After marriage, Raj Kapoor finds out what was going on between his wife and Dilip Kumar working as a Manager of her estate.

This song comes about at that time when he tries to distance himself from his wife because of Dilip Kumar.

Hats off to Majrooh for the outstanding lyrics and hats off to Naushad for the composition in Raag Kedar, Taal Dadra.

Please enjoy Lata Mangeshkar sing: Uthaye ja unake sitam….

(uThaaye jaa un ke sitam aur jiye jaa
yuu.N hii muskuraae jaa aa.Nsuu piye jaa ) – 2
uThaae jaa un ke siitam …

yahii hai muhabbat kaa dastuur ai dil, dastuur ai dil
vo gam de tujhe tuu duaae.n diye jaa
uThaaye jaa un ke sitam …

kabhii vo nazar jo samaaI thii dil me.n
samaaI thii dil me.n
usii ek nazar kaa sahaaraa liye jaa
uThaae jaa un ke sitam …

sataae zamaanaa yaa sitam Dhaaye duniyaa
sitam Dhaaye duniyaa
magar tuu kisii kii tamannaa kiye jaa
uThaaye jaa un ke sitam aur jiye jaa
yuu.N hii muskuraae jaa aa.Nsuu piye jaa
uThaaye jaa un ke sitam …

Song #9
Hum aaj kahin dil kho baithe

And the last song from the 1949 Mehboob Khan movie Andaz is a Mukesh song from happier times in the movie. Dilip Kumar riding a horse in Shimla saves the life of Nargis also on a horse when her horse runs amok. She invites him home and finds that he sings and plays the piano too.

(Pic courtesy: India Today on the occasion of Dilip Kumar turning 97 this year)

Please enjoy: Hum aaj kahin dil kho baithe….

ham Aj kahI.n dil kho baiThe
yU.N samajho kisI ke ho baiThe
ham Aj kahI.n …

haradam jo koI pAs Ane lagA
bhed ulfat ke samajhAne lagA
nazaro.n se nazar kaa TakarAnA
thA dil ke liye ik afasAnA
ham hAtho.n se dil ko ga.nvA baiThe

pUchho to yahI hai usakA patA
cha.nchal nainA aur shokh adA
ham dil kI naiyyA Dubo baiThe
ham Aj kahI.n …

Song #10
Zara saamne aa

The next movie for which Majrooh penned songs was the 1950 movie Pyar, fourth of the 17 movies that Raj Kapoor and Nargis starred in together after 1947 Aag, 1949 Barsaat, and 1949 Andaz.

Rajendra Krishan penned most of the songs of the movie except one that was written by Majrooh: Vo sapnewaali raat milan ki raat that was sung by Geeta Dutt. All songs were composed by SD Burman.

The next movie for which he penned just one song (the others were penned by various lyricists including Sahir) was the 1953 movie Shole starring Ashok Kumar and Bina Rai. The song that he wrote was Bala se hasrate mit jaaye which was composed by Dhaniram and sung by Geeta Dutt.

(en.wikipedia.org)

And then came Guru Dutt’s 1953 movie Baaz for which Majrooh penned all the songs and OP Nayyar composed them. These were the songs:

  1. “Jo Dil Ki Baat” – Mohd Rafi
  2. “Tare Chandni Afsane Sama” – Geeta Dutt
  3. “Aye Dil Aye Deewane” – Geeta Dutt
  4. “Zara Saamne Aa” – Geeta Dutt
  5. “Aye Watan Ke Naujawan” – Geeta Dutt
  6. “Jaago Jaago Savera Hua” – Geeta Dutt
  7. “Mujhe Dekho” – Talat Mahmud
  8. “Pyaar ka Kanta” – Geeta Dutt

Lets take up Zara saamne aa sung by one Geeta for the other; that is Geeta Dutt for Geeta Bali:

zara samne aa zara aankh mila
zara samne aa zara aankh mila
tera sukariya kar du ada
aise na machal man jaye na kuchal
tera dam hi nikal jaye na

zara samne aa zara aankh mila
zara samne aa zara aankh mila
tera sukariya kar du ada
aise na machal man jaye na kuchal
tera dam hi nikal jaye na

pas aa tujhe sikha du girke sambhlna tujhko sikha du
tujhko batadu rahe dekh dekh chalna
pas aa tujhe sikha du girke sambhlna
tujhko batadu rahe dekh dekh chalna
aise na machal man jaye na kuchal
tera dam hi nikal jaye na
zara samne aa zara aankh mila
tera sukariya kar du ada
aise na machal man jaye na kuchal
tera dam hi nikal jaye na

man ke banaye hue jalo me na fasna kahi tujhe
kahi tujhe rona pade itna na hasna
man ke banaye hue jalo me na fasna

zara samne aa zara aankh mila
tera sukariya kar du ada
aise na machal man jaye na kuchal
tera dam hi nikal jaye na

Song #11
Sare mehfil jo jala parwana

In the next movie, the 1953 movie Akash, once again he penned just one song: Ajib hai zindagi ki manzil sung by Shankar Dasgupta on a composition by Anil Biswas.

Truly, after the success of his 1946 movie Sahjehan, Majrooh was kind of struggling both because of his illness as also because of his anti-establishment ideas.

In 1954 came Shama Parwana, another movie regarding another poet as was the trend those days. Gul Mirza was a poet who used to sing in the palace of Mughal king Arkat-ul-Daula (another Hindi movies fascination those days). Gul Mirza falls in love with his daughter: Sahebzadi Aalam.

Majrooh Sultanpuri penned ten songs whereas Qamar Jalalabadi penned one:

1. Sare mehfil jo jala parwana.
2. Tune mera yaar na milaya.
3. Woh marne se nahin darte.
4. Teri qudrat teri tadbir.
5. Sham-e-bahar aayi.
6. O parwane shama ko apni ruswa na karna.
7. Tu hi bharosa tu hi sahara.
8. Alvida O jaane tamanna alvida.
9. Mauj khamosh hai.
10. Ulfat ke jaam pila pila.

The movie had Shammi Kapoor starring with Suraiya. She herself sang many songs.

All songs were composed by Hindi movies first duo music director: Husnlal Bhagatram.

Lets listen to the duet between Suraiya and Mohammad Rafi: Sare mehfil jo jala parwana….

sare mahfil jo jala parwana
sare mahfil jo jala parwana
kar gaya name wafa parwana
kar gaya name wafa parwana

shama se karke wafa parwana
shama se karke wafa parwana
ye jali hai to jala parwana
ye jali hai to jala parwana

marke bhi rah na saka shama se dur
marke bhi rah na saka shama se dur
khak ban ban ke uda parwana
khak ban ban ke uda parwana

rat bhar shama khadi jalti rahi
rat bhar shama khadi jalti rahi
is tarah jal na saka parwana
is tarah jal na saka parwana

jan de di wahi kuch der na ki
jan de di wahi kuch der na ki
shama se pahle jala parwana
shama se pahle jala parwana

shama ki aag me jalne aaya
shama ki aag me jalne aaya
khud na kyu khak hua parwana
khud na kyu khak hua parwana
khud na kyu khak hua parwana

apni lau me to sabhi jalte hai
apni lau me to sabhi jalte hai
shama ki lau me jala parwana
shama ki lau me jala parwana
shama ki lau me jala parwana
kar gaya name wafa parwana

Song #12
Rukhsat-e-duniya teri mehfil meri

In the last movie you must have seen Majrooh’s mastery over shair-o-shayari, one reason he was criticized after he joined Hindi movies that he ignored non-filmy poetry that he could have excelled in.

The next movie for which he penned songs was the 1954 movie Samaj, which was a Vasant Joglekar movie. The movie starred Ashok Kumar and Shashikala. He paired with Music Director Arun Kumar Mukherjee to make the following songs:

1. Rukhsat-e-duniya teri mehfil meri.
2. Kal din se sawan barsata hai rimjhim.
3. Balma ho ho balma.
4. Aa biram more birna rakhi bandhu.
5. Gam to bana mere liye.
6. Chalte bane leke jiya.
7. Idhar aayo pyar nar aazmaye.

Rukhsat-e-duniya teri mehfil meri was sung by Lata Mangeshkar. Lets enjoy:

rukhsat duniya rukhsat duniya
teri mehfil meri mehfil nahi
isme teri kya khata
isme teri kya khata
mai hi tere kabil nahi
rukhsat duniya rukhsat duniya
teri mehfil meri mehfil nahi

aaye jab duniya me ham to
hans ke kismat ne kaha
teri manjil aur hai duniya teri manjil nahi
teri manjil aur hai duniya teri manjil nahi
rukhsat duniya rukhsat duniya
teri mehfil meri mehfil nahi

ho chuka jab khun hi dil ka
to fir kya fayda
ho chuka jab khun hi dil ka
to fir kya fayda kyu kisi ka naam lu
koi mera gafil nahi mat mujhe aawaj do
ab dub jane do mujhe mat mujhe aawaj do
ab dub jane do mujhe mai hu toofan ke liye
mere liye sahil nahi rukhsat duniya
teri mehfil meri mehfil nahi
rukhsat duniya
teri mehfil meri mehfil nahi

Darwaza, in 1954, was the next movie for which Majrooh penned the songs except for three songs that were penned by Khumar Barabankwi and one by Vidshwamitra Adil.

All songs were composed by Nashad or Shaukat Dehlvi Nashad. Here is the list of songs penned by Majrooh:

1. Aag lagi is sawan mein.
2. Na kisi ki aankh ka noor hoon (Koi kisliye meri mehfil mein aaye).
3. Chhote tumase to lo ham.
4. Tumhen kya hai bahane karo nisdin.

Na kisi ki aankh ka noor hoon was sung by Sabita Banerjee.

Please enjoy another version of Na kisi ki aankh ka noor hoon…

na kisi ki aankh ka nur hu na kisi ke dil ka karar hu
jo kisi ke kaam na aa sake mai vo muftgaar hu

koi kisliye meri mahfil me aaye
koi kisliye meri mahfil me aaye
bujhi samma hu mai koi kyu jalaye koi kyu jalaye
koi kisliye meri mahfil me aaye
bujhi samma hu mai koi kyu jalaye koi kyu jalaye

najar pyaar ki meri dali uthe kyu
ujala mujhe har aawaj de kyu
kai kismat me likhe balao ke saaye
koi kisliye meri mahfil me aaye
bujhi samma hu mai koi kyu jalaye koi kyu jalaye

nahi roshani mai kisi ki najar ki
nahi roshani mai kisi ki najar ki
chaman hu mai apne dodho jigar ki
mujhe dekh kar koi dhokha na khaye dhokha na khaye
koi kisliye meri mahfil me aaye
bujhi samma hu mai koi kyu jalaye koi kyu jalaye

khila hai jo jakhamo se mai vo chaman hu
khila hai jo jakhamo se mai vo chaman hu
nahi chandani me tu apna safar hu
kaho jindagi se mujhe bhul jaye mujhe bhul jaye
koi kisliye meri mahfil me aaye
bujhi samma hu mai koi kyu jalaye koi kyu jalaye

Song #17
Hamen ai dil kahin le chal

(en.wikipedia.org)

The next movie was the 1954 movie Chandini Chowk in which Majrooh penned four songs alone, one with Saifuddin Saif, whereas the others were penned by Shailendra, Raja Mehdi Ali Khan and Kamil Rashid.

All songs were composed by Roshan.

Here are the songs that Majrooh penned:

1. Hamen ai dil kahin le chal.
2. Zameen bhi vahin hain vahin aasman. (With Saif)
3. Aa jaye jaane wale.
4. Har baat puchhiye ye hakikat.
5. Banno ke haath bhari mehdi.

Hamen ai dil kahin le chal was sung by Mukesh. Lets enjoy.

hame aye dil kahi le chal
bada tera karm hoga
hamare dam pe hai har gum
na hum honge na gum hoga
hame aye dil kahi le chal

khabar kya thi bahar aakar
hamare aashiyane par
hamare aashiyane par
khabar kya thi bahar aakar
hamare aashiyane par
hamare aashiyane par
nayi bijli girayegi
naya hum par sitam hoga
hame aye dil kahi le chal
bada tera karam hoga

tamannao se badli
na badlegi kabhi kismat
na badlegi kabhi kismat
tamannao se badli
na badlegi kabhi kismat
na badlegi kabhi kismat
likha hai jo mukaddar me
wahi teri taswwur hai
hamare dam pe hai har gum
na hum honge na gum hoga
hame aye dil kahi le chal

Song #18
Babuji dheere chalna

(Cinestaan.com)

And then he penned songs for Guru Dutt’s 1954 movie Aar Paar. The movie starred Shyama, Guru Dutt, Jagdish Sethi, Johnny Walker, Shakila and Jagdeep.

This started a fruitful relationship not just with Guru Dutt but the composer of his songs: OP Nayyar.

Following were the songs; suddenly, Majrooh found the kind of songs that he should be making:

  1. “Sun Sun Sun Sun Zaalima” Geeta Dutt and Mohammed Rafi
  2. “Ja Ja Ja Ja Bewafa” Geeta Dutt
  3. “Babuji Dheere Chalna” Geeta Dutt
  4. “Ye Lo Main Haari Piya” Geeta Dutt
  5. “Hoon Abhi Main Jawaan Aye Dil” Geeta Dutt
  6. “Mohabat Karlo Ji Barlo” Geeta Dutt and Mohammed Rafi
  7. “Na Na Na Na Na Na Tauba Tauba” Geeta Dutt and Mohammed Rafi
  8. “Kabhi Aar Kabhi Paar” Shamshad Begum

Tonight, we would be taking up Geeta Dutt’s very popular song from the movie and then some more tomorrow.

Please enjoy Babuji dheere chalna picturised on Shakila:

Song #19
Sun sun sun sun zaalima

Yesterday, we had started taking up songs of the 1954 Guru Dutt movies Aar Paar, one of the movies that set the stage for future enchanting songs of Majrooh, especially with composer OP Nayyar. We had taken up just one song: Geeta Dutt singing for Shakila: Babuji dheere chalna.

Lets now listen to this duet between Geeta Dutt and Mohammad Rafi singing for Shyama and Guru Dutt (with this Geeta Dutt sang in the movie for both Shyama and Shakila!).

Please enjoy: Sun sun sun sun zaalima…..

sun sun sun sun zaalimaa
pyaar hamako tumase ho gayaa

Song #20
Kabhi aar kabhi paar

The title song of the 1954 Guru Dutt movie wasn’t sung by his wife Geeta Dutt (she married him on 25th May 1953). It was sung by Shamshad Begum whom we lost four years ago on 23rd April.

Any guess about the Raag of this song? Well done! You guessed it right, it is in OP Nayyar’s favourite Raag Pilu. Tal is Kaherava.

Please enjoy: Kabhi aar kabhi paar…..

kabhii aar kabhii paar laagaa tiir-e-nazar
sai.nyaa ghaayal kiyaa re tuu ne meraa jigar

Aa tere milne ko tarse jiya
Ruk jaa re piya
Ruk jaa re piya re
Mora dhadke jiya
Tohe raam kasam
Ruk jaa re balam
Ruk jaa re balam ruk jaa

Gaaliyan zamane bhar ki
Sunu kis kusoor pe
Gaaliyan zamane bhar ki
Sunu kis kusoor pe
Apna begaana chhoda
Pyaar mein huzoor ke
Apna begaana chhoda
Pyaar mein huzoor ke
Maine zamane ko dushman kiya
Ruk jaa re piya
Ruk jaa re piya re
Mora dhadke jiya
Tohe raam kasam
Ruk jaa re balam
Ruk jaa re balam ruk jaa

Nainwaa na kholun main
Na karoon tose batiyaan

Majrooh’s next movie in 1955 was an M Sadiq movie Musafirkhana that starred: Gope, Johnny Walker, Karan Dewan, Kumkum, Om Prakash, Shammi Kapoor, and Shyama.

OP Nayyar and Asha Bhosle

Majrooh once again paired with Omkar Prasad Nayyar to make the following songs:

1. Thoda sa dil laga ke dekh.
2. Zara si baat ki hazoor ne fasana kar diya.
3. Achha ji maaf kar do thoda insaaf kar do.
4. Kuchh aankh mili kuchh paisa mila.
5. Meri nigah ne kyaa kaam.
6. Dil de daala nazraana.
7. Jeete hain mar mar ke.

9. Agar babu dil hai kabu.

Please enjoy Asha Bhosle sing: Zara si baat ka hazoor ne fasaana kar diya…

zaraa si baat kaa huzur ne fasaanaa kar diyaa
zaraa si baat kaa huzur ne fasaanaa kar diyaa

Song #24
Jaane kahan mera jigar gaya ji

Majrooh’s association and success with Guru Dutt that started with 1954 movie Aar Paar took him to another Guru Dutt movie Mr and Mrs 55 starring Guru Dutt, Madhubala, Lalita Pawar and Johnny Walker (a must in all Guru Dutt movies).

Majrooh’s association with Omkar Prasad Nayyar continued in this movie and they made the following songs:

1.”Ab To Jee Hone Laga” – Shamshad Begum
2.”Neele Aasmani” – Geeta Dutt
3.”Chal Diye Banda Nawaz” – Geeta Dutt, Mohammed Rafi
4.”Dil Par Hua Aisa Jadoo” – Mohammed Rafi
5.”Jaane Kahan Mera Jigar Gaya Ji” – Geeta Dutt, Mohammed Rafi
6.”Meri Duniya Loot Rahi Thi” – Mohammed Rafi
7.”Preetam Aan Milo” – Geeta Dutt
8.”Preetam Aan Milo (duet)” – Geeta Dutt, C. H. Atma
9.”Thandi Hawa Kaali Ghata” – Geeta Dutt
10.”Udhar Tum Haseen” – Mohammed Rafi, Geeta Dutt

As you can see, once again, as in Aar Paar, there are quite a few hit songs.

We shall take up some tomorrow. Tonight, for the last song, we shall take up a song picturised on Johnny Walker and Yasmin (Vinita Bhatt). OP Nayyar gave quite a few of his songs to Johnny Walker in his career including the unforgettable: Ae dil hai mushkil jeena yahan. Similarly, it was delightful to have Mohammad Rafi singing for Johnny and Geeta Dutt for Vinita Bhatt.

Yasmin made herself popular with this line in the song: Badi badi akhiyon se dar gaya ji

Please enjoy: Jaane kahan mera jigar gaya ji….

jaane kahaan meraa jigar gayaa ji
abhi abhi yahi thaa kidhar gayaa ji
kisi ki adaao pe mar gayaa ji
badi badi akhiyo se dar gayaa ji

kahi maare dar ke chuhaa to nahi ho gayaa
kone kone dekhaa na jaane kahaan kho gayaa
yahaan use laae kaahe ko binaa kaam re
jal_di jal_di dhudho ke hone lagi shaam re

sachchi sachchi kah do dikhaao nahi chaal re
tune to nahi hai churaayaa meraa maal re
aise nahi chori khulegi takaraar se
chalo chalo thaane bataae jamaadaar se

koi ulfat ki nazar zaraa pher de
lele do chaar aane jigar meraa chhed de
baate hai nazar ki nazar se samajhaaugi
pahale pado pa_iyaa to phir batalaaugi

Song #25
Udhar tum haseen ho

Last night we had started with songs of the 1955 Guru Dutt movie Mr and Mrs 55 starring Madhubala opposite Guru Dutt.

We had just taken one song: Jaane kahan mera jigar gaya ji picturised on Johnny Walker (a must in Guru Dutt movies) and Vinita Bhatt.

It doesn’t require a reminder that once again Majrooh succeeded with OP Nayyar (after Guru Dutt’s Aar Paar just two movies before in 1954).

Lets take a duet between Mohammad Rafi and Geeta Dutt picturised on Guru Dutt (who died at the age of 39 years; some believe that he committed suicide whereas others maintain it was just an overdose of sleeping pills with alcohol) and Madhubala (who died tragically at the age of 36 years due to a hole in the heart).

Please enjoy: Udhar tum haseen ho….

ra : udhar tum hasii.n ho idhar dil javaa.N hai
ye ra.ngiin raato.n kii ek daastaa.N hai
gii : ye kaisaa hai naGmaa ye kyaa daastaa.N hai
bataa e mohabbat meraa dil kahaa.N hai

ra : mere dil me.n aa_ii hu_ii hai bahaar

ra : udhar tum hasii.n ho …

lagatii hai.n taaro.n kii parachhaa_iyaa.N

lagii.n jaagane dha.Dakane.n kho_ii-kho_ii
merii har nazar aaj dil kii zubaa.N hai
ra : udhar tum hasii.n ho …

ra : tarasataa huu.N mai.n aise diladaar ko
jo dil me.n basaa le mere pyaar ko
gii : tere Kvaab hai.n merii raato.n pe chhaa_e
mere dil pe hai.n terii palako.n ke saa_e
ki mere labo.n pe terii daastaa.N hai
ra : udhar tum hasii.n ho …

Song #26
Thandi hawa kaali ghata aa hi gayi jhuum ke

And the last song from the 1955 Guru Dutt movie Mr and Mrs 55 starring Guru Dutt and Madhubala is one of the most enchanting songs of Geeta Dutt, Guru Dutt’s wife whom he had married in 1953.

Song #27
Koi jab dard ga mara kabhi aansu bahata hai

That brings us to his last movie of 1955: Miss Coca Cola. This film directed by Kedar Sharma was an early example of a brand name being used as the title of a feature film. The movie starred Shammi Kapoor, Geeta Bali, Helen Richardson and Johnny Walker.

Majrooh Sultanpuri continued romancing with OP Nayyar when it came to making songs of the movie. And why not? After all they just finished songs of two movies Aar Paar and Mr and Mrs 55 and both had super hit songs.

They made the following songs for the movie:

1 “Jeena Hai Kya Koi Kya Jaane O DiwaneJhum Le” Asha Bhosle
2 “Jhukaa Jhukaa Ke Nigaahen Milaae Jaate Hain” Asha Bhosle, Mukesh
3 “Kabhi Kabhi Mere Dil Khub Maza Aata Hai” Asha Bhosle
4 “Koi Jab Dard Ka Mara Kabhi Aansu Bahata Hai” Mohammed Rafi, Shamshad Begum
5 “Zara Humse Nigahe Mila Zara Ulfat Ka Jadu Jaga” Asha Bhosle
6 “Sach Sach Bol Nahi Batiya Bana, BatiyaBana Ke” Geeta Dutt
7 “Teri Kafir Nigah Kar Gayi Dil Ko Taba Jab Se” Geeta Dutt
8 “Ban Dhadkan Kajrare Naina Dole Re Ghunghat Me” Geeta Dutt
9 “Koi Jab Dard Ka Mara Kabhi” Shamshad Begum, Mohammed Rafi

Lets listen to an Aansu song, the theme of last Fest on the Facebook group: Yaad Kiya Dil Ne: Koi jab dard ga mara kabhi aansu bahata hai…..

koi jab dard ka mara kabhi aansu bahata hai
koi jab dard ka mara kabhi aansu bahata hai
zamane se khuda kam hai zamana muskurata hai
zamane se khuda kam hai zamana muskurata hai

ha hmesha se yahi hota hai is duniya ki mehfil me
ha hmesha se yahi hota hai is duniya ki mehfil me
tamasha dekhne wala tamasha ban ke aata hai
tamasha dekhne wala tamasha ban ke aata hai
zamane se khuda kam hai zamana muskurata hai

jise dekha usi ne dil dukhaya is zamane me
jise dekha usi ne dil dukhaya is zamane me
yahi humne to dekha jaha tak yaad aata hai
yahi humne to dekha jaha tak yaad aata hai
zamane se khuda kam hai zamana muskurata hai

Majrooh Sultanpuri reluctantly got into Hindi movies as a lyricist. But, once he took the step he became the third most prolific lyricist after Sameer and Anand Bakshi. He wrote more than 2000 songs. Hence, I have chosen more than 200 songs as his best songs. These are available in several parts.

Please await Part II.

I have done a long stint in the Indian Navy that lasted for nearly thirty seven years; I rose as far as my somewhat rebellious and irreverent nature allowed me to. On retirement, in Feb 2010, the first thing that occurred to me, and those around me, was that I Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (you will find an article with this title in this blog) and hadn't lost all my noodles and hence thought of a blog titled 'This 'n That'. I later realised that every third blog is called 'This 'n That' and changed the name to 'Sunbyanyname'. I detest treading the beaten track. This blog offers me to air 'another way' of looking at things. The idea is not just to entertain but also to bring about a change. Should you feel differently, you are free to leave your comments. You can leave comments even when you agree and want to share your own experience about the topic of the blog post. Impudent or otherwise, I have never been insousciant and I am always concerned about the betterment of community, nation and the world. I hope the visitors of this blog would be able to discern it.
