hum dil ki dhadkan ki lay par

jinko hum bhul nahi sakte
o hum unko kab yaad aate hai

mai lakh bhulata hu unko
wo rah rah kar yad aate hai
ek kadam uthata hu aage
wo piche hat hat jate hai

ik khushi ke badle aath pahar
aankho se ashk bahate hai
dil tham tham kar rote hai
ho jo ulfat ulfat gate hai
ek taraf mohabbat roti hai
ek taraf se nare aate hai
jai hind juba se bol sipahi
ab paav dole jate hai
jai hind
hum gate hai shikwe unke
wo mitti ke gun gate hai
hum tumse milne ko pritam
o mitti ko gale lagate hai

Day #44, Song #132
Meri jaisi nahin milegi

We started taking up songs of the 1950 DN Madhok and Ram Kamlani movie Khamosh Sipahi starring Sohan Lala and Nigar Sultana.

If Hansraj Behl composed the songs, you can expect some Punjabi flavour to them.

Imagine having Punjabi flavour in a duet sung by Geeta Dutt and Mohammad Rafi.

Please enjoy: Meri jaisi nahin milegi…

o mere jaisi nahi milegi
ho mere jaisi nahi milegi
bholi bhali naar
pade rahe sasua ke ghar me
liya jiya ko maar
o biti jaye jawani meri
biti jaye jawani meri
le chal jamuna par, bada sukh dungi
davedar teri rahungi, jab tak jiungi mai
davedar teri rahungi, jab tak jiungi mai

o mere jaisa nahi milega
hoye mere jaisa nahi milega
dhund le dunia sari
shyam mera jane hai mujhko
tumse ulfat bhari

dil dukhe to kaleja dhadke
dil dukhe to kaleja dhadke
haye mai mar gayi
ang ang mera fadke mai kit jau re
aaja kisi bahane, tujhe bulau re
aaja kisi bahane, tujhe bulau re
hoye aaja

Day #45, Song #133
Yaad aane wale phir yaad aa rahe hain

(Courtesy: en.wikipedia.org)

After making the successful movie Rattan in 1944, M Sadiq directed Anmol Rattan in 1950.

Once again, DN Madhok wrote all the songs. However, instead of Naushad (who was now paired with Shakeel Badayuni), Vinod composed the songs.

The cast included Karan Dewan who was the lead cast in Rattan too. Instead of Swaran Lata, Meena Kumari was chosen together with Madan Puri, Gope, Gulab and Nirmala.

Vinod should have been credited for giving a break to Talat Mahmood first. However, Arzoo was released before Anmol Rattan and hence the first song of Talat happened to be credited to Anil Biswas: Ai dil mujhe aisi jagah le chal.

Vinod composed the following songs:

1. Shikavaa Teraa Main Gaaun Talat Mahmood, Lata Mangeshkar
2. Dard Mila Hai Tere Pyar Ki Nishani Lata Mangeshkar
3. Taare Vohi Hain Chaand Vohi Hai Lata Mangeshkar
4. Mere Ghunghat Me Do Nain Pukare Lata Mangeshkar
5. Laakho Me Ek Hamare Saiya Haye
6. Koi Kah Do Balamua Se Uth Nahi Jaye
7. Yaad Aane Wale Phir Yaad Aa Rahe Hai Lata Mangeshkar, Talat Mahmood
8. Sajan Aaye Aadhi Raat Lata Mangeshkar
9. Jab Kisi Ke Rukh Pe Zulfe Aa Ke Lehrane Lagi Talat Mahmood
10. Kale Kale Badalo Me Pani Asha Bhosle
11. More Dwar Khule Hai Aane Wale Kab Aaoge Lata Mangeshkar

Here is the best song of the movie sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Talat Mahmood.

Please enjoy: Yaad aane wale phir yaad aa rahe hain…

yaad aane wale phir yad aa rahe hai
yaad aane wale phir yad aa rahe hai
mere khyalo ki dunia pe
chaye ja rahe hai phir yad aa rahe hai
yad aane wale phir yad aa rahe hai

hum bhi chup hai wo bhi chup hai pyar khada msukaata hai
hum bhi chup hai wo bhi chup hai pyar khada msukaata hai
nain mile sharmaau nain ki or jiya ghabrata hai
nain mile sharmaau nain ki or jiya ghabrata hai
maujo ki rate umango ke din bite ja rate hai
phir yad aa rahe hai yad aane wale phir yad aa rahe hai

mast alag si nigaho wale hum par ek ehsan kiye ja
mast alag si nigaho wale hum par ek ehsan kiye ja
mitha mitha dard suhana
mitha mitha dard suhana dene waale aur diye ja
phir yad aa rahe hai

Day #45, Song #134
Shikwa tera main gaayun

We are taking up songs of the 1950 M Sadiq movie Anmol Ratan starring Karan Dewan and Meena Kumari; all songs having been composed by Vinod on the lyrics of DN Madhok.

(courtesy: en.wikipedia.org)

Who was Vinod? Well, he was born on 28 May 1922 and died on 25 Dec 1959 at the age of just 37 years. He was a student of Pandit Amar Nath whom I had introduced you earlier particularly with his find Zeenat Begum who was a Kothewali.

With his Punjabi background (born in Lahore), his Punjabi songs became popular; for example Larra lappa larra lappa layi rakhda from 1949 movie Ek Thi Ladaki. Another song that comes to mind is Saari saari raat tera tak ni aa raah.

I am ready to give you another duet between Lata Mangeshkar and Talat Mahmood.

Please enjoy: Shikwa tera main gaayun…

shikava tera mai gaaun dil me samane vale
shikava tera

hum bhi hain zid ke poore zid ke nibhane vale
pi jayege ansu bhi hum le rulane vale, shikava tera
shikava tera mai gaaun dil me samane vale
shikava tera

mar jaye hum aap hume yaad karoge
mar jaye hum aap hume yaad karoge
roge phoot phoot kar fariyaad karoge
dhundhege phir sahara ansu bahane vale
shikava tera mai gaaun dil me samane vale
shikava tera

Day #45, Song #135
Koi kah do balamua se uti nahin jaaye

And the last song for tonight is also from the 1950 M Sadiq movie Anmol Ratan starring Karan Dewan and Meena Kumari.

This one was sung by Nirmala Devi. I already informed you that she was actor Govinda’s mother.

Please enjoy: Koi kah do balamua se uti nahin jaaye…

koi kah do balmva se uti nahi jaye
koi kah do balmva se uti nahi jaye
jit jayike more tan aag lagaye
jit jayike ha jit jayike ho
jit jayike more tan aag lagaye
koi kah do balmva se uti nahi jaye
koi kah do

daman mere me na dal duniya ki dolte
de dolte unhe jo inhe pa ke khush rahe
apni to mang ek hai bolo to hum kahe
mangu mai saiya ji ka pyar mil jaye haye
mangu mai saiya ji ka pyar mil jaye
koi kah do balmva se uti nahi jaye
koi kah do balmva se uti nahi jaye
jit jayike more tan aag lagaye
jit jayike ha jit jayike ho
jit jayike more tan aag lagaye
koi kah do balmva se uti nahi jaye
koi kah do

sabnam ke motiyo me kali jhum rahi ho
meri najar ke samne najara wahi ho
nayno me nayna dal piya muskaye haye
nayno me nayna dal piya muskaye
koi kah do balmva se uti nahi jaye
koi kah do balmva se uti nahi jaye

Day #46, Song #136
Beimaan tore nainawa

(Courtesy: cinestaan.com)

We start today with the 1951 Ram Daryani movie Tarana. Everyone knows that that was the first movie when Dilip Kumar and Madhubala acted together.

Anil Biswas, who got Talat Mahmood to sing his first ever song in Hindi movies: Ai dil mujhe aisi jagah le chal, composed songs for this movie too.

The best song of the movie wasn’t penned by DN Madhok but by Prem Dhawan: Seene mein sulagate hain armaan.

DN Madhok wrote five songs for the movie as follows:

1. Bol papihe bol re.
2. Beimaan tore nainawa.
3. Kya khabar thi wo din kahan gaye bata?
4. Mose rooth gayo mora saawariya.
5. Youn chhup chhup ke mera aana.

We shall be taking up songs #2, 3, 4 tonight.

To start with lets listen to Lata Mangeshkar singing a favourite of mine. Even though this was their first movie, there was remarkable chemistry between Dilip Kumar and Madhubala.

Please enjoy: Beimaan tore nainawa…

aadhe soye aadhe jaage
aadhe soye aadhe jaage
saanchi kahu mohe yu laage
jaise man mein bharam ek aaye ek jaaye
jaise man mein bharam ek aaye ek jaaye
beimaan tore nainwa, nindiya na aaye
beimaan tore nainwa, nindiya na aaye

Day #46, Song #137
Kya khabar thi wo din kahan gaye bata

We entered the year 1951; the 21st year in the career of DN Madhok as a lyricist.

This was the first movie of Dilip Kumar with Madhubala which resulted in reel and real love story until Madhubala’s father stepped in to block the real life one mainly because if Madhubala was to get married, the family would lose a bread-winner!

Out of nine songs composed by Anil Biswas for the movie, DN Madhok wrote five; the others were penned by Prem Dhawan and Kaifi Irfani. The best song of the movie Seene mein sulagate hain armaan was penned by Prem Dhawan.

Here is the second song from the same movie; this too by Lata Mangeshkar.

Please enjoy: Kya khabar thi wo din kahan gaye bata…

kya khabar thi ke mohabbat me ye din aate hai
jise hum apna banate hai, wo tadapate hai

wo din kahan gaye bata
wo din kahan gaye bata
jab is nazar me pyar tha, pyar tha
wo din kahan gaye bata

maine to kuch kaha nahi
jo yu nigahe pher li
maine to kuch kaha nahi
wo raat yaad hai yahi, kissa hua tha pyar ka
wo din kahan gaye bata
wo din kahan gaye bata

aankho me nind thi magar
soye nahi the raat bhar
aankho me nind thi magar
soye nahi the raat bhar
dil ko laga hua tha dar
haye savera ho gaya
wo din kahan gaye bata

wo din kahan gaye bata
jab is nazar me pyar tha, pyar tha
wo din kahan gaye bata

Day #46, Song #138
Mose rooth gaya mora sawariya

We have already taken up two out of five penned by DN Madhok for the 1951 Ram Daryani movie Tarana starring Madhubala and Dilip Kumar; the first time they were together in a movie.

Anil Biswas composed all the songs.

Here is the third one also sung by Lata Mangeshkar.

Please enjoy: Mose rooth gaya mora sawariya…

mose ruth gayo mora sanwariya
kiski lagi hay hay kiski lagi
julmi najariya
mose ruth gayo mora sanwariya
kiski lagi hay hay kiski
lagi julmi najariya

pyar ki rahe anadi ka sath hai
lagi hamari ki laj tere hath hai
lagi hamari ki laj tere hath hai
tori kagaj ki naiya hai more sawariya
kagaj ki nayya hai more sawariya

kiski lagi hay hay kiski
lagi julmi najariya
mose ruth gayo mora sanwariya
kiski lagi hay hay kiski
lagi julmi najariya

lagi julmi najariya
mose ruth gayo mora sanwariya
kiski lagi hay hay kiski
lagi julmi najariya

This is a beautiful duet between Mohammad Rafi and Geeta Dutt.

Please enjoy: Badi mushkil se aisi shaam aayi hai…

badi mushkil se aisi sham aayi hai
na chup raho mere kano me kuch kaho
khush raho badi mushkil se aisi shaam aayi hai
na chup raho mere kano me kuch kaho khush raho

jara dhalte hue suraj ko rok lo
jara ugte hue chanda se ye kaho
ke ja re ja abhi na aa abhi na apni rat ho
abhi aankho me aankhe dalni
hasrate niklani hai vighan na ho
badi mushkil se aisi sham aayi hai
na chup raho mere kano me kuch kaho
khush raho badi mushkil se aisi sham aayi hai
na chup raho mere kano me kuch kaho khush raho

idhar chada udhar gaya koi bhi ho
badi mushkil se aisi sham aayi hai
na chup raho mere kano me kuch kaho
khush raho badi mushkil se aisi sham aayi hai
na chup raho mere kano me kuch kaho khush raho

We shall take up Song #2: Tere poojan ko bhagwan bana man mandir sung by Asha Bhosle and Hamida Banu.

Please enjoy: Tere poojan ko bhagwan bana man mandir…

To start with let’s take up the very first song in the list above, sung by Suraiya.

Please enjoy: Parwano se prit sikh le…

parwano se preet sikh le
shama se sikhe jal jana
phir duniya ko yaad rahega
phir duniya ko yaad rahega
tera mera afsana
parwano se preet sikh le
shama se sikhe jal jana
phir duniya ko yaad rahega

shabnam se hum sikhenge
fariyad na karna, ro lena
fariyad na karna, ro lena
phulo se sikhenge hum
kaanto ki nok par mit jana
phir duniya ko yaad rahega
phir duniya ko yaad rahega
tera mera afsana
parwano se preet sikh le
shama se sikhe jal jana
phir duniya ko yaad rahega

bulbul bankar janam janam
mai teri khoj me gaaungi
mai teri khoj me gaaungi
yahi aas lekar hai jeena
isi aas me mar jana
phir duniya ko yaad rahega
phir duniya ko yaad rahega
tera mera afsana
parwano se preet sikh le
shama se sikhe jal jana
phir duniya ko yaad rahega
phir duniya ko yaad rahega
tera mera afsana
parwano se preet sikh le
shama se sikhe jal jana

Day #49, Song #147
Panghat pe more Shyam bajaye muraliya

We are taking up songs of the 1954 movie Ehsan directed by Dn Madhok himself and starring CH Atma and Suraiya; both of whom sang for themselves as composed by Bulo C Rani.

One thing that I hope you noticed about DN Madhok that he maintained the quality of his lyrics all the way from 1932 on to his 98th movie in 1954, the 23rd year of his career. This cannot be said, for example, of Indeevar who gave us some memorable songs but then decided to wrote trash for Bappi Lahiri in 72 movies having about 500 songs; given in to lucre rather than to greatness.

(Courtesy: cineplot.com)

Let me end today by now giving you a song by CH Atma.

Please enjoy: Panghat pe more Shyam bajaye muraliya…

panghat pe more shyam bajaye muraliya
panghat pe more shyam bajaye muraliya

jal jamuna
jal jamuna pag chuman aaye
jal jamuna pag chuman aaye
pawan chalat ithlaye
pawan chalat ithlaye
ithlaye ithlaye
kaliyo ne bhware se puchha
kaliyo ne bhware se puchha
kaun hai ye man chhaliya
kaun hai ye man chhaliya
bajaye muraliya
panghat pe more shyam bajaye muraliya

murli baji ban ki kaya sab sunne ko bhagi
sun kar kaliya
sun kar kaliya bhor se pahle apne biya se jaagi
yahi raat hai
bholi bhali
bholi bhali brij nari ka man har lino chhaliya
bajaye muraliya
panghat pe more shyam bajaye muraliya
bajaye muraliya

Day #50, Song #148
Ye raat din ka phera

Yesterday, we took up two songs of the 1954 movie Bilwamangal; one each by Suraiya and CH Atma; both of them being the lead cast of the movie directed by DN Madhok.

Before we move on to the next movie, lets take another song from CH Atma or Atma Hashmatrai Chainani. He was born in 1923 in Hyderabad (Sind), now in Pakistan. He died on 06 Dec 1975.

His song of 1945 Preetam aan milo was sung by Geeta Dutt on the composition of OP Nayyar in her husband Guru Dutt’s movie Mr & Mrs 55.

Please enjoy: Ye raat din ka phera…

Din ne jaate jaate
Mujhko raat ke haath kiya
Bhor bhayi aur jhaad chadariya
Raat ne kuchh kiya
Phir pahre par suraj aayaa
Phir wohi din ke phere
Pahredaar badalte jaayen
Bandh na chhute mere

Ye raat din ka phera
Ye raat din ka phera
Laga rahega
Jab tak na kuchh hoga
Yaha se tera
Ye raat din ka phera

Subah guzar gayi hai
Aur shaam jaa rahi hai
Subah guzar gayi hai
Aur shaam jaa rahi hai
Murakh sambhal ke dar pe
Wo raat aa rahi hai
Is raat ka jeewan mein
Kabhi hoga naa sawera
Is raat ka jeewan mein
Kabhi hoga naa sawera
Ye raat din ka phera

Maaya ke laade sar pe
Dhar ke kaha chala hai
Maaya ke laade sar pe
Dhar ke kaha chala hai
Aur moh jholiyon mein
Bhar ke kaha chala hai
Manzil hai dur teri
Kadam dagmagaaye tera
Ye raat din ka phera
Laga rahega
Jab tak na kuchh hoga
Yaha se tera
Ye raat din ka phera.

Day #52, Song #154
Duniya banane wale ne jab chand

Ladies and gentlemen,

Today, with a heavy heart, I shall bring you to the last of the songs of Deena Nath Madhok who was amongst the first generation of Lyricists in India together with Kavi Pradeep and Kidar Sharma.

He started his professional tenure as lyricist with the 1932 movie Radhey Shyam soon after the first talkie was released in India: Alam Ara in 1931.

He wrote over 800 songs in over 100 movies and very painstakingly I have tried to find as many of his songs as possible.

It is lyricists like DN Madhok who blazed the trail for all others who followed him.

In addition to lyrics, he directed 19 movies and even wrote screenplays. We have taken songs of a few of the movies directed by him and the last such movie was the 1954 movie Bilwamangal. There was one more movie that he directed after that: Naata in 1955 starring Masdhubala and Chanchal. However, the lyrics were by Tanveer Naqvi.

(Courtesy: imdb.com)

Tasveer was the second last movie of his life. This 1966 movie was directed by JBH Wadia and starred Feroz Khan, Kalpana, Helen, Sajjan, Rajendra Nath, Nazir Hasain, Leela Mishra, Raj Mehra, Lalita Pawar, and Sabeena.

Chitalkar Ramchandra composed the following songs, all written by DN Madhok:

1. Duniya Banane Wale Ne Jab Chand Banaya Mahendra Kapoor
2. Mai Teri Dil Tera Re Mitwa Asha Bhosle
3. Nazar Badli Zamane Ki Mahendra Kapoor
4. Mere Sulagte Huye Dil Ko Magar Asha Bhosle
5. Chale Kaha Ho Meri Dhadkane Badha Ke Mahendra Kapoor, Suman Kalyanpur
6. Dene Wala Do Dil Deta Mahendra Kapoor
7. Samjhoge Tum Kya Bhala Asha Bhosle
8. Tasveer Bhi Dekhi Thi Mahendra Kapoor

We shall be taking up the first two songs.

To start with, here is the song sung so beautifully by Mahendra Kapoor.

Please enjoy: Duniya banane waale ne jab chand banaya…

duniya banane wale ne duniya banane wale ne
jab chand banaya
aur pani me ek raat padi uski jo chaya
ek banwara panchi ye pukar utha
haye ye nur ke sanche me dala kaun haye
itrake chand jake badlo me chup gaya
rone laga chakor se haye ye kya hua

fir sokhiye ne chand ke vo kaan bhar diye
ye bepalak gurur ne ghatna shuru kiye
ek raat aisi aayi ke gayab vo ho gaye
fitne jaga ke aap kahin jakr so gaye
us raat jo roya hai chakora
harsay bhari pe sote huye ko jaga diya

raham aa gaya rahim ko aur usne pukara
are ja mere parinde teri bigdi ko sanwara
ye ishq hai khota tu jamin par vo arsh par
rota rahega waqt ki gadiyo ko umar bhar
hamne jamin ka chand hamne jamin ka chand
tujhe bejh diya hai tujhe bejh diya hai

Day #52, Song #155
Main teri dil tera hai mitwa

In 52 days, covering DN Madhok’s career from 1932 Radhey Shyam to 1969 movie Samay Bada Balwan, I would have given you 156 of his gems.

As you would have listened to the last song from the 1967 movie Tasveer: Duniya banane wale ne jab chand banaya, you would have surely noticed the excellence of the lyrics in the 36th year of his career as lyricist. That’s the hallmark of a great lyricist.

Lets take up the second promised song from Tasveer, a JBH Wadia movie starring Feroze Khan and Kalpana (Padmini’s sister).

This was sung by Asha Bhosle.

Please enjoy: Main teri dil tera hai mitwa…

mai teri dil tera re mitva
jaan bhi mango du
are re fir aur se fiki aakul
are re fir aur se fiki aakul
mai teri dil tera re mitva
jaan bhi mango du
are re fir aur se fiki aakul
are re fir aur se fiki aakul

ek baar mera dil lekar apne dil me rakh lo
kya hoti hai pyar ki dhadkan
sajan aap parkh lo sajan aap parkh lo
har dhadkna jab yehi pukare
meet mai teri hu
are re fir aur se fiki aakul
are re fir aur se fiki aakul

jag ka chalan ye hi hai mitva
vo dekhe ki preet
aankh ke aansu man se ojhal
ye hi aaj ki reet ye hi aaj ki reet
badte jaye reham hamare
raat ghate jyu jyu
are re fir aur se fiki aakul
are re fir aur se fiki aakul
mai teri dil tera re mitva
jaan bhi mango du
are re fir aur se fiki aakul
are re fir aur se fiki aakul

Day #52, Song #156
Teri tasveer se aankhon mein

And now for the last movie of DN Madhok as a lyricist: the 1969 movie Samay Bada Balwan that we are all relearning now because of COVID 19.

With this the 38 years of career of Hindi movies first generation lyricist comes to an end. He died on 09 Jul 1982, 13 years after his last movie, in Hyderabad, at the age of 79.

Samay Bada Balwan was produced and directed by Sohrab Modi and starred Sohrab Modi, Mehtab, Aruna Irani, Sailesh Kumar and Shahida.

The onus of composing the last songs of DN Madhok fell on Usha Khanna and she did a good job of composing the following penned by him:

1 “Teri Tasveer Se Aankhen Meri Kyun Hatati Nahi” Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhosle
2 “Bhoole Afsane Phir Se Yaad Aaye” Mohammed Rafi
3 “Yun Na Dekho Hame Pyar Aayega” Asha Bhosle
4 “Rooth Kar Tum Bhala Yun Kahan” Asha Bhosle
5 “Dil Me Dhadkan Lab Par Haye” Usha Khanna,Hemlata
6 “Dekho Chhalla Mila Nishani” Krishna Kalle
7 “Ek Do Teen Ye Mehjabin” Mohammed Rafi
8 “Waqt Zalim Hai Kisiko Nahin Chhoda Isne” Mohammed Rafi

With these, he completed writing 880 songs for 111 movies. The actual number may differ from the official one because there were a few movies wherein I couldn’t make out the actual distinction of songs between him and co-lyricists.

We shall be taking up the first one sung most beautifully by Mohammad Rafi and Asha Bhosle.

Please enjoy: Teri tasveer se aankhen meri kyun hatati nahin…

teri tasveer se aakhe meri kyo hatti nhi
teri tasveer se aakhe meri kyo hatti nhi
sochta hu ise kahte na ho pyar khi haye
miti si hai besharmiya or chain nhi
sochta hu ise kahte na ho pyar khi haye
miti si hai besarmiya or chen nhi

din gujar jaye yuhi raat bhi kat jaye yu
jee yhi chahe sur me tere beti rhu
bekrari me hi ab mujhko karar aata hai
chen kahte hai jise mere liye chen nhi
teri tasveer se aakhe meri kyo hatti nhi

agar yhi pyar hai to is pyar pe pyar aaye hame
or tadpaye hame or bhi tadpaye hame
dil ye kahta hai mhobbat ka ye dastur nhi
teri becheniya tham jaye ye manjur nhi
teri tasveer se aakhe meri kyo hatti nhi

I hope you liked all 156 songs out of 880 songs of 111 movies that I consider as the best of DN Madhok who was among the first generation of lyricists in Hindi movies.

Please await our 12th Lyricist: Kidar Sharma.

Author: Sunbyanyname

I have done a long stint in the Indian Navy that lasted for nearly thirty seven years; I rose as far as my somewhat rebellious and irreverent nature allowed me to. On retirement, in Feb 2010, the first thing that occurred to me, and those around me, was that I Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (you will find an article with this title in this blog) and hadn't lost all my noodles and hence thought of a blog titled 'This 'n That'. I later realised that every third blog is called 'This 'n That' and changed the name to 'Sunbyanyname'. I detest treading the beaten track. This blog offers me to air 'another way' of looking at things. The idea is not just to entertain but also to bring about a change. Should you feel differently, you are free to leave your comments. You can leave comments even when you agree and want to share your own experience about the topic of the blog post. Impudent or otherwise, I have never been insousciant and I am always concerned about the betterment of community, nation and the world. I hope the visitors of this blog would be able to discern it.
