HASRAT JAIPURI SONG OF THE WEEK #1 – TU KAHAN YE BATA

Dedication

I have a Songs group on Facebook called Yaad Kiya Dil Ne.  The title is the title of a song in 1953 Amiya Chakrabarty movie Patita starring Dev Anand and Usha Kiran. The song was penned by Hasrat Jaipuri and composed by Shankar Jaikishan. Kishwar Jaipuri, Hasrat’s daughter, is a member of the group and hence Hasrat Jaipuri Song of the Week was thought of by me to pay tribute to her illustrious dad.

This is thus:

Our Dedication to a Lyricist to Whom
We Owe the Title of Our Songs Group

If anyone in the group says that he or she is in love with the song, it is an understatement.

Here is why this dedication for a whole year (at least) in the form of Hasrat Jaipuri Song of the Week or HJSOW in short:

  1. As related by Annu Kapoor, once when Mahendra Kapoor was being felicitated on stage in a gathering, he noticed that his guru, Mohammad Rafi‘s son was sitting in the audience. He called him on the stage, took out the garland put around his neck and put it for Mohammad Rafi’s son and said, “I can’t be felicitated in a gathering in which Rafi’s son is present; he represents my guru and he needs to be felicitated before me.” I am sure all of us have similar regards for Kishwar Jaipuri, the daughter of Shahenshah-e-Rumaniyat Hasrat ji.
  2. My behna Manik Lakhkar Chava spoke to me on the dawn of the New Year 2020 and said we are all missing Mil Song of the Day or MSOD type of series. I thought about it and came up with this. I hope all of you like it. Instead of HJSOD I have thought of HJSOW to give more time for each song to sink in and seen and commented upon by all. In this way we can put up 52 of his best songs and if need be continue after 2020.
  3. As I brought out during my dedications to lyricists on my page Lyricial (https://www.facebook.com/Sunbyanyname/), when we take up in this manner (by delving deep into each song), we discover so many facts that would have eluded us as casual members of this group (I hope there is none since we don’t encourage people to put up merely the urls of songs).

Roster of HJSOW

For the first month, I am taking up (I always lead from the front) the responsibility of putting up the HJSOW #1 to #5. These don’t have to be on a fixed day. Indeed, Sundays and Saturdays are to be avoided when there is a Fest going on.

Others have bid for the subsequent months and their posts would appear in this blog as Guest Posts.

HJSOW #1
Tu kahan ye bata

The song is from the 1963 Dev Anand production (for Navketan Films): Tere Ghar Ke Samne directed by his brother Vijay Anand and starring Dev Anand and Nutan.

Other than our devotion to Hasrat Jaipuri Sahib, and my personal dedication to my sisters in this group, I am really devoted to my place in the hills made by my father and mother: Whispering Winds, Kandaghat, Shimla Hills.

Shimla Hills is where I want to be (in my blog there is an article to this effect: Home Is Where The Heart Is – Kandaghat In Shimla Hills)

Any song that can take me there in my mind is dear to me. This one put together by Hasrat Jaipuri, SD Burman and Mohammad Rafi is dear to me because out of the four movies that Dev Anand and Nutan did together, two of them: this one, Tere Ghar Ke Samne and Manzil (with another beautiful Hemant Kumar song: Yaad aa gayin wo nasheeli nigahen) were partly shot in Shimla.

SD Burman with Dev Anand. Sachin Dev Burman used to say that his middle name was the name of his favourite hero.

In addition to Hasrat ji, we salute SD Burman for always bringing out the freshness of the hills in his hill based songs; the other one that comes to mind is the Bambai Ka Babu song: Deewana mastana hua dil jaane kahan hoke bahar aayi?

Avoid The Title Song of The Group

When it is your turn to put up HJSOW please avoid putting up Yaad Kiya Dil Ne Kahan Ho Tum. As I said, it goes without saying that all of us are in this group because of this song. Whenever we have a Meet of my YKDN group we sing this song together.

Please enjoy: Tu kahan ye bata is nasheeli raat mein…

Tu kahan
Tu kahan, ye bata, is nashili raat mein
Maane na mera dil diwana
Haay re maane na mera dil diwana
Tu kaha, ye bata, is nashili raat mein
Maane na mera dil diwana
Haay re haay maane na mera dil diwana

He bada natkhat hai sama
Bada natkhat hai sama, har nazara hai jawan
Chha gaya charo taraf, meri aahon ka dhuan
Dil mera, meri jaan na jala, tu kahan
Tu kahan, ye bata, is nashili raat mein
Maane na mera dil diwana
Haay maane na mera dil diwana

O o aayi jab thandi hawa
Aayi jab thandi hawa, maine pucha jo pata
Vo bhi katraate gayi, aur bechain kiya
Pyar se tu mujhe de sada, tu kahan
Tu kahan, ye bata, is nashili raat mein
Maane na mera dil diwana
Haay re haay maane na mera dil diwana

He chand taaro ne suna
Chand taaro ne suna, in baharon ne suna
Dard ka raag mera, rahguzaaron ne suna
Tu bhi sun jaaneman aa bhi ja, tu kahan
Tu kahan, ye bata, is nashili raat mein
Maane na mera dil diwana
Haay maane na mera dil diwana

O o pyar ka dekho asar
Pyar ka dekho asar, aaye tum thaame jigar
Mil gayi aaj mujhe, meri manchahi dagar
Kyu chhupa, ek jhalak fir dikha, tu kaha
Yu kahan, ye bata, is nashili raat mein
Maane na mera dil diwana
Haay re haay maane na mera dil diwana
haay maane na mera dil diwana
Haay maane na mera dil diwana

I hope you liked the song.

In the past we have had two series: Raaga Based Song Of The Day and Songs That Tug At Your Emotions. Here is another weekly series. I shall add more such series for other lyricists since basically I am a Lyrical man in that the lyrics of a song mean a lot to me.

Author: Sunbyanyname

I have done a long stint in the Indian Navy that lasted for nearly thirty seven years; I rose as far as my somewhat rebellious and irreverent nature allowed me to. On retirement, in Feb 2010, the first thing that occurred to me, and those around me, was that I Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (you will find an article with this title in this blog) and hadn't lost all my noodles and hence thought of a blog titled 'This 'n That'. I later realised that every third blog is called 'This 'n That' and changed the name to 'Sunbyanyname'. I detest treading the beaten track. This blog offers me to air 'another way' of looking at things. The idea is not just to entertain but also to bring about a change. Should you feel differently, you are free to leave your comments. You can leave comments even when you agree and want to share your own experience about the topic of the blog post. Impudent or otherwise, I have never been insousciant and I am always concerned about the betterment of community, nation and the world. I hope the visitors of this blog would be able to discern it.
