VIAGRA FOR FIGHTER COCKS

Ever since 1989 when Pfizer accidentally discovered that Sidenafil that was being tried for angina, could also be used to treat erectile dysfunction, it caught the imagination of men around the world. However, even after Pfizer started selling it under the brand name Viagra and it became popular, no one would have thought that Indians would find another (unthinkable) use for it. The Indian state of Andhra may be a poor state, particularly in villages. However, these villages spend crores of rupees betting on cocks. You heard it right, cocks. And the breeders of these cocks found innovative use for Viagra (The Times of India, Mumbai edition, 07 Jan 24).

Cockfights are the most exciting part of Sankranti celebrations in Andhra. However, lately, breeders discovered that cocks are not as energetic as would fetch hefty bets. So, they reasoned that if Viagra could make its recipients have their cocks standing to perform their assigned and desired duties, surely the same Viagra could make Andhra cocks fight with the same vigour as, say, Indian parliamentarians. And, they succeeded.

One of the earliest discovered side-effects of Viagra was headaches. This wasn’t such bad news. The males were excited not just to show their spouses the Leaning Tower without going to Pisa, if only for a couple of hours, but also to get over their (the women’s, that is) perennial excuse of headaches to avoid onslaught. After Viagra and its side-effect, they could confidently say that desires and headaches could stand hand in hand.

And now, with fighting cocks, Viagra can even get its recipients bravery medals; Param Vir Chakra, for example, for going down fighting till the last breath or peck.

I am wondering if Andhra is the only innovative state in the country. Why can’t we find other uses of Viagra across the country?

If, for example, we can find a way for these tablets or capsules to work on recently erected bridges and flyovers, these can be left standing longer than some of these presently do. Just like in cock-fighting, crores of rupees of public money can be saved even after the contractors elope.

Indeed, this innovation can be applied to all public erections: buildings, towers, pillars etc.

These pills can be given to all contesting candidates in our elections so that they can keep standing even after the vote count begins. Indeed, since Viagra is also used by sportsmen around the world for performance enhancement, perhaps we can try it upon our governments rather than merely hoping that somehow their performance would improve simply because they were voted to power or to rule.

Lately, we are looking for names, mottoes and phrases better suited for our culture and heritage. Perhaps we can find a Hindi name (better still, Sanskrit) for it and do a lot of (government funded) research and finally establish that centuries before Pfizer, Vatsayana had indeed discovered a potion (called Kama Booti) that was used by Indian males to show off their proud minars to the female of the species much before one Qutb-ud-Din-Aibak erected his own in the year 1199 on the outskirts of Delhi. Qutb’s erection used “the carved columns and architectural members of 27 Jain and Hindu temples, which were demolished by Qutub-ud-Din Aibak as recorded in his inscription on the main eastern entrance.” But, we can proudly proclaim that the purely Indian erections never destroy anything. Our burgeoning population is a proof of this.

Incidentally, look at some of the names of fighting cocks in Andhra: there are around 20 varieties of fighting roosters, including kaaki dega, dega, benaki, kaaki nemali, setu and pacha. Names are important; we definitely need to adapt the Sanskritization of Viagra.

And don’t forget that in order to get over Pfizer’s patent, we sold Viagra under the trade names including Kamagra (Ajanta Pharma), Silagra (Cipla), Edegra (Sun Pharmaceutical), Penegra (Zydus Cadila), Manly (Cooper Pharma) and Zenegra (Alkem Laboratories).

I recall when I was small, whilst going to school and back, we used to come across vendors selling on road sides Shilajeet type of drugs and powders to enhance male performance: “Patthar pe marega tann ki awaaz aayega (you would be able to hit it on a stone and get the same sound as that of a gong).”

We can inject some of the wonder drug into the spines of some of our public figures so that they keep erect and don’t collapse at the first sign of discussing national issues of corruption, state funding of elections and police reforms. Anna Hazare, for example, didn’t have to go into hibernation after arousing the national conscience.

The pills should be definitely administered to some of the audiences in our cinemas who themselves and make their small ones too not to stand for the national anthem.

As an aside, if only we had thought of administering the wonder drug to the Indian batsmen in the first innings of the Second Cricket Test Match between South Africa and India at Newlands in Cape Town, perhaps we could have avoided the ignominy of losing the last six wickets in 11 balls without scoring a single run. We could have had the batsmen standing proud and erect and not allowed balls to do what proud and erect can do.

And, if the world would ask us about being sure about Kama Booti, we could take cue from Peter Sellers 1968 movie The Party. As Hrundi V. Bakshi in the movie when he was asked if he thought he was right, he responded, “In India we don’t think, we are sure.”

And now we can be, well, cocksure about it.

APPRECIATION OF THE SITUATION ARISING FROM…

Belatedly (before that I couldn’t be spared), I had been sent to the DSSC or Defence Services Staff College in Wellington (Nilgiris) in the year 1990-91 to qualify as a Staff Officer, if anyone needed me.

One of the most important things that you learn during the Staff Course is Appreciation. The process involves looking at the Situation, considering its various Factors and then arriving at likely Courses of Action for the Enemy and then coming up with Own Courses of Action to best counter the enemy.

After the Staff Course, I was appointed to Warship Work-up Organisation (WWO) in Vizag.

One Sunday, Lyn, my wife, asked me to fetch fresh vegetables from Scindia market whilst she was busy cleaning up the house and washing clothes.

I told her that I would as soon as I finished with newly learnt Appreciation about how to go about getting the vegetables.

“What’s there to Appreciate?” She asked me, “All that you have to do is to put down your crossword, put on your foot – wear, start the car and go.”

I told her that one thing that DSSC had taught me was that life’s situations are not as easy as they initially looked and that after a proper Appreciation I would come across best course of action and then make an action plan.

She gave me that look that only she could. Meanwhile, I was applying Principles of War to all available Factors including Flexibility and Surprise.

After sometime I heard the front door bang and decided that she had chosen my best course of action, that is, to go to Scindia market herself to fetch the vegetables.

That enabled me to solve the last clue of the Crossword: India’s ace spinner (7, 6). After unsuccessfully trying Bishen Singh Bedi, Prasanna and Chandrashekhar, it turned out to be Mahatma Gandhi!

However, there was total silence at home. Surely, she could have returned long time ago with the vegetables. And where were Arjun and Arun?

Another fifteen minutes and then I got up since I couldn’t take it anymore. There was no lunch at the dining table. There was only a note that read, “If you have finished your Appreciation and feeling hungry, please join us at the club. Since you didn’t get the vegetables we can all have lunch there.”

And to think that Staff College teaches you that you can apply Appreciation and Principles of War to every situation.

P.S. Those of you who are from Chennai can confirm to me if the girls of Holy Angels are also taught Appreciation and Principles of War because it was she who gave me: Surprise! She had accurately predicted Enemy Course of Action and chosen the best suited for her!

P.P.S. Very soon we had a bonfire when I burnt my Staff College dockets for being impractical!

MY DILEMMA ON THE OPERATION THEATER TABLE

Adverse situations bring out the best in me. The last time when I was in the hospital seriously ill, I came out with one of my most popular humorous articles: ‘Sleep And I – Lovers Once Strangers Now‘.

Likewise, I had the only surgery of my life performed on 12 May (except for an excision biopsy performed forty-one years ago). It was an open surgery and not a laparoscopic one. I was given a spinal anaesthesia whilst the doc and his assistant operated on my inguinal region.

The docs at the Apollo Hospital had told me it was “a semi-emergency”. However, they had refused to perform it saying that surgeries were not open to ECHS (defence) patients. Hence, I had to fall back on good old friends in the oldest hospital in Mumbai: INHS Asvini. When Kokilaben Hospital was inaugurated by the PM Narendra Modi, they erroneously ascribed to themselves the title of “the oldest hospital in Mumbai”. INHS Asvini is older by more than 150 years.

So, there I was, wheeled into the operation theater and a spinal anaesthesia given to me so that the inguinal region and region below it became numb for pain.

In order to make it easier to pass time I was chatting with the anaesthetist at my head, a Keralite. It was about ninety minutes of surgery and when we came to near the end of the operation, I mentioned to him how beautiful Kerala is.

At this, the treating doctor’s assistant (a Tamil) told me jovially, “Sir, you may like to decide what is more beautiful: Kerala or Tamilnadu before I suture you up.”

My anaesthesia got worn out by that time and I saw the beauty of Tamilnadu in a new light.

The suturing up was completed happily after that! Fresh Local anaesthesia was given but even the anaesthetist agreed with me I had made the right choice!

The doctor’s assistant had given a new meaning to the phrase: ‘Beauty is but skin deep.’ My skin was made intact again and I saw beauty where I had failed to notice it earlier.

PICTURE OF INNOCENCE ALWAYS WINS

Looking back, I can’t even imagine my wife Lyn (short for Marilyn) did this. (Please read: Lyn And I – Scene By Scene)

Mohan Ram Sir would vouch for it that his country cousin is as pious and innocent as they come. She is as far from being cunning and extra smart as Coimbatore is from Chicago.

l left her in the Kotah House Mess in New Delhi when I went on deputation to Spain. I told her that we appeared to be near the top of accommodation roster and she won’t have to suffer the Kotah House outhouse (initially meant for Raja of Kotah’s domestic staff) too long as we would be allotted a house soon.

“How soon?” She asked me before I boarded the Air India flight to Madrid.

“Latest by a month” I told her confidently.

She waited for a month and still no accommodation.

She put Arjun (not yet four years) and Arun (not yet two years) in an auto rickshaw with her and went to see the CAO (Chief Administrative Officer) of the rank of Major General or Joint Secretary.

After checking up, he confirmed that I was indeed on top of the roster and would be allotted a house as soon as it fell vacant.

Sounds like a reasonable response? Well, not to Lyn since in the last four weeks, on phone, she was given the same excuse again and again.

“Alright, Sir”, she told the General, “We can wait. But, since we are on the road, perhaps we can stay in your office until then.”

The Maj Gen looked up and saw Arun had already gone to sleep on his sofa and Arjun was actively converting all available papers in vicinity into planes and boats.

He shuddered at the thought of Ravi family converting his office into their home.

To cut a long story short, by evening the three of them shifted into A – type accommodation overseen by Maj Gen’s personal representative. Amongst other things he had given instructions to attend to small and big defects lest she should take another auto-rickshaw to visit his office.

HAAY YEH HAI KAISI MAJBOORI!

TO HIS BELOVED “CORONA”

On the first day of Lockdown due to COVID 19, here is the tale of woes of a lover to his beloved. If this reminds of your situation with your wife or husband, it is purely coincidental. If this is the first day, imagine another 20. I will keep up your morale with such pieces!

CURFEW KA MAUKA

A poem about wife’s simple demand to her husband on the occasion of Curfew on Sunday, 22 March 20.

HASYA PANKTIYAN OF THE DAY #65 – CHHODO AISI GOOD MORNING

Good morning

HASYA PANKTIYAN OF THE DAY #63 – PYAR MEIN LACHAAR

HASYA PANKTIYAN OF THE DAY #64 – SINGING FEST MEIN GUEST

HASYA PANKTIYAN OF THE DAY #61 – DOOR ANDESHI PLANNING COMMISSION

HASYA PANKTIYAN OF THE DAY #60 – BILLI KI DALEEL

हालांकि, normally, curiosity kills the cat,

HASYA PANKTIYAN OF THE DAY #59 – LONG LIVE INDIAN FREEDOM

HASYA PANKTIYAN OF THE DAY #58 – SWAMI HANUMAN SINGH JI

HASYA PANKTIYAN OF THE DAY #57 – DOCTOR AUR ZUKAAM

CT Scan,

Test result

Common Cold

*Based on true story.
