Song #28
Ek din bik jaayega mati ke mol

Raj Kapoor

The Kapoor family contribution to Hindi Films (now bastardized as Bollywood movies due to vested interests) has been the greatest. Three of them were conferred the highest award by Government of India in cinematic excellence: the doyen of the family: Prithviraj Kapoor and his two sons: Raj Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor.

Raj Kapoor received, in addition, three National awards, 11 Filmfare awards, and Padma Bhushan.

Prithviraj Kapoor introduced Raj Kapoor in the 1935 Debaki Bose movie Inquilab, at the age of only ten years. The movie had Kidar Sharma as a set painter and bit role, also procured through Prithviraj Kapoor. He was so grateful to Prithviraj Kapoor that when he directed his first movie Neel Kamal in 1947 (the longest run by Madhubala in this movie whilst singing a song!), he took Raj Kapoor as the hero in his debut role as hero.

Twenty eight years later, at the age of nearly 51 years, Raj Kapoor was still going strong after having spent 41 years of acting in Hindi movies. The name of the movie was Dharam Karam, a movie produced by Raj Kapoor and directed by his song Randhir Kapoor.

Old Team and New

Prithviraj Kapoor initially and then Raj Kapoor set up a team in Hindi movies that made the best movies and songs: Shankar Jaikishan as Music Director, Hasrat Jaipuri and Shailendra as Lyricists, KA Abbas as story teller, Radhu Karmakar as cinematographer and so on.

However, after the demise of Shailendra in 1966 and Jaikishan in 1971, Raj Kapoor looked elsewhere and initially homed on Laxmikant Pyarelal and Neeraj. In this movie, it was totally different.

Dharam Karam – 1975 Movie

Majrooh with RD Burman and Lata

The songs of the movie were made by Majrooh Sultanpuri and RD Burman. Majrooh, who had been reengineering himself since debut movie in 1946: Shahjehan, received nomination for the Best Lyricist for this song. Mukesh who sang it also received nomination for Best Playback singer. The song is played twice in the movie: Once by Mukesh in the happy version and once by Mukesh and Poornima (nowadays known as Sushma Shreshtha).

The Lyrics

It is as if Raj Kapoor asked Majrooh to write his farewell song to remember him by:

Ladies and gentlemen, please enjoy: Ek din bik jaayega…

Author: Sunbyanyname

I have done a long stint in the Indian Navy that lasted for nearly thirty seven years; I rose as far as my somewhat rebellious and irreverent nature allowed me to. On retirement, in Feb 2010, the first thing that occurred to me, and those around me, was that I Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (you will find an article with this title in this blog) and hadn't lost all my noodles and hence thought of a blog titled 'This 'n That'. I later realised that every third blog is called 'This 'n That' and changed the name to 'Sunbyanyname'. I detest treading the beaten track. This blog offers me to air 'another way' of looking at things. The idea is not just to entertain but also to bring about a change. Should you feel differently, you are free to leave your comments. You can leave comments even when you agree and want to share your own experience about the topic of the blog post. Impudent or otherwise, I have never been insousciant and I am always concerned about the betterment of community, nation and the world. I hope the visitors of this blog would be able to discern it.
