THE BEST SONGS OF DN MADHOK – PART III – 1943 TO 1947

As with all posts on Lyricists, these posts are a compilation of my daily posts on my Facebook page Lyrical.

I hope you liked my choice of songs for Part II.

Lets begin taking up songs for Part III.

Day #19, Song #55
Din suna suraj bin

(Courtesy: IMDb)

Yesterday, we took up three songs out of four that DN Madhok wrote for the 1943 Jayant Desai movie Tansen starring KL saigal in the title role with Khursheed Bano as Tani, his beloved.

Pandit Indra wrote nine other songs and those too are very nice including Diya jalao in Raag Deepak and Baraso re in Raag Megh Malhar.

Here is the last of the four songs penned by DN Madhok and composed by Khemchand Prakash.

Please enjoy KL Saigal singing: Din suna suraj bin…

Day #19, Song #56
Subah hui aur panchhi jaage

That brings us to the year 1944, the 13th year of DN Madhok’s career.

(Courtesy: Cinestaan.com)

His first movie was Daasi, a Hiren Bose movie starring Najam, Ragini, Gyani, Omprakash, and Khairati.

Pandit Amarnath composed the following of his songs:

1. Subah hui aur panchhi jaage.
2. Wo din yaad karo.
3. Dekha karo Bhagwan.
4. Khamosh nigahen ye sunaati hain kahani.
5. Dhan ke khet mein na jayo mere raja.
6. Jao sajan harjai harjai balam mujhe chhedo na.
7. Kabhi le chal tu jamuna ke paar.
8. Mil ke bichhad mat jaana.
9. Tatein na rahi wo na rahe din.
10. Meri aarzoo dekh kya chahta hoon.
11. Ghar baar ujada.
12. Ho rasiya ho kabhi le chal tu.

We shall take up the first two sung by Zeenat Begum.

Zeenat Begum, a courtesan and a classical singer was the discovery of Pandit Amarnath but not in this movie. It was in the year 1942 that he found her. The first Hindi movie in which she sang was Nishani, a 1942 movie.

She migrated to Bombay from Lahore in 1944, the same year when this movie was released with her songs.

Please enjoy: Subah hui aur panchhi jaage…

subah hui aur panchi jaage chog chugan ko bhage
subah hui aur panchi jaage chog chugan ko bhage
tu bhi ghar ko aaja re mohan nain khojne laage
subah hui

dahi bilou soch soch khush hou
dahi bilou soch soch khush hou
abhi to aake sher sunake
abhi to aake sher sunake makhan mujhse mange
subah hui
subah hui aur panchi jaage chog chugan ko bhage
tu bhi ghar ko aaja re mohan nain khojne laage
subah hui

din chadh aaya man mohan nahi aaya
din chadh aaya man mohan nahi aaya
le matki mai chali khojne
le matki mai chali khojne pag piche man aage
subah hui
subah hui aur panchi jaage chog chugan ko bhage
tu bhi ghar ko aaja re mohan nain khojne laage
subah hui

Day #19, Song #57
Wo din yaad karo

The year 1944 is very important in the career of DN Madhok as we shall be taking up the most melodious songs of the movie Rattan.

However, before that we started with Hiren Bose movie Daasi starring Najam, Ragini, Gyani, Omprakash, and Khairati.

Pandit Amarnath, who had discovered Zeenat begum, a courtesan and classical singer, made her sing many songs in the movie and we took up one of them. She migrated fromLahore to Bombay in 1944 and back to Lahore in 1951.

The second song by her and the last one tonight is this.

Please enjoy: Wo din yaad karo…

wo din yaad karo wo din yaad karo
wo din yaad karo wo din yaad karo
gaav ki tori rasiya khai gaav ki tori rasiya khai
hatho me gopiya lekar aayi hatho me gopiya lekar aayi
aankh se aankh milai aankh se aankh milai
wo din yad karo wo din yad karo
wo din yad karo wo din yad karo

yad karo wo sapna pyara hatho me hath tha tumhara
yad karo wo sapna pyara hatho me hath tha tumhara
ab mera kaun sahara ab mera kaun sahara
wo din yad karo wo din yad karo
wo din yad karo wo din yad karo

der bhai der bhai ghar aao balma
har gaye hai ro ro ke amma
tumko hamari kasam tumko hamari kasam
wo din yad karo wo din yad karo
wo din yad karo wo din yad karo

(Courtesy: Cinestaan.com)

His next movie in 1944 was Geet; another Abdul Rashid Kardar movie but this time produced by him and directed by SU Sunny.

The movie starred Shahu Modak, Nirmala Devi, Aamir Ali, Shakir Ali and Chandabai.

Once again Naushad composed DN Madhok’s songs:

1. Hua Savera Preetam Mera Amirbai Karnataki
2. Bedard Zamana Are Shahu Modak
3. Chand Khila Tare Muskaye
4. Kab Aag Mohabbat Ki Bhujaye Se
5. Mai To Piya Ki Joganiya Hu
6. Saaqi Saaqi Dil Bujh Hi Gayaa Hai Sine Men Zohrabai Ambalewali
7. Bedard Zamana Are (Version 2) Shahu Modak
8. Jao Ji Jao
9. Mai Akeli Raja Aa Ja
10. O Aag Laga Ke Bhaag Gaye Shahu Modak

To start with, let’s listen to Amirbai Karnataki.

Please enjoy: Hua savera preetam mera…

huaa savera preetam mera
huaa savera preetam mera
yaad teri ne ghera mohe ghera
yaad teri ne ghera mohe ghera

mast hawaye aayi jholiyo me
bhar laayi khushbu
mast hawaye aayi jholiyo me
bhar laayi khushbu
aam pe paphiya bole

pihu re pihu bol khusbu

sone wale nind ke matwale jag
sone wale nind ke matwale jag
mahak utha ghar tera
mahak utha ghar tera
huaa savera preetam mera
yaad teri ne ghera mohe ghera

kaliyo ne ankhiya kholi
kuch boli bol kar doli
kaliyo ne ankhiya kholi
kuch boli bol kar doli
bhawra fir jhum jhum aaye
bhawra fir jhum jhum aaye
kuch lahar gun gunaye

aane jani si jawani teri hai
aane jani si jawani teri hai
pani joban tera
pani joban tera
huaa savera preetam mera
yaad teri ne ghera mohe ghera
huaa savera preetam mera

Day #20, Song #59
Saaqi saaqi dil bujh hi gaya hai seene mein

We just took up a song sung by Amirbai Karnataki on the lyrics of Deena Nath Madhok and composition of Naushad for the 1944 AR Kardar production and directed by SU Sunny.

Amirbai Karnataki needs no introduction. She had been singing DN Madhok songs for a number of years. However, Devika Rani’s Bombay Talkies production of 1943: Kismet’s songs really made her very popular.

Of course, the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi made her very famous for adoring her Vaishnav jan to tene kahiye. He adopted the song as his favourite hymn.

The second song that I have selected for you was sung by Zohrabai Ambalewali; this being the first time she sang DN Madhok’s lyrics.

We are still one movie away from 1944 movie Rattan when she would sing Akhiyan milake jiya bharmake that I selected as one of the songs that tugs at your emotions.

Even though she was 12 years younger to Amirbai Karnataki she is counted amongst the first generation of playback singers including Amirbai Karnataki, Shamshad Begum and Rajkumari Dubey.

Please enjoy Zohrabai Ambalewali singing: Saaqi saaqi dil bujh hi gaya hai seene mein…

saaqi saaqi
dil bujh hi gayaa hai sine me
kuchh lutf nahi ab jine me
saaqi saaqi

saaqi tere jaam wo jaam nahi
kyaa rakhaa hai ab pine me
saaqi tere jaam wo jaam nahi
kyaa rakhaa hai ab pine me
saaqi saaqi

saaqi pahali si baat nahi
pahale din pahali raat nahi
jab teraa hi wo haath nahi
jab teraa hi wo haath nahi
kyaa rakhaa hai phir sine me
saaqi saaqi

ab saawan ke din bit gaye
ham haar gaye tum jit gaye
saaqi jab chhod ke mit gaye
saaqi jab chhod ke mit gaye
kuchh lutf nahi phir jine me
saaqi saaqi
dil bujh hi gayaa hai sine me
kuchh lutf nahi ab jine me
saaqi saaqi

Day #20, Song #60
Bedard zamana are

I gave you two songs from the 1944 SU Sunny movie (AR Kardar production) Geet; one each by Amirbai Karnataki and Zohrabai Ambalewali.

Here is a duet now between Nirmala Devi (actor Govinda’s mother) and Shahu Modak.

(Courtesy: en.wikipedia.org)

Shahu Modak was an actor singer who acted in many Hindi and Marathi movies. He played many mythological characters such as Krishna and Dnyaeshwar.

I have already given you songs from many movies with songs by DN Madhok such as Vasantysena, and Kanoon.

Please enjoy: Bedard zamana are…

bedard jamana are bedard jamana
mere dil ki duniya hai
tum duniya rachana
tum duniya rachana

do ek jalak kabhi ban ban ek dhare
roke hai jaise unki raho ke ishare
ham ishq ki baji kabhi jite kabhi hare
gate bhi rahe fir bhi mohabbat ka tarana
ye dil ki duniya hai
yaha dil dil na fasan
tum dil na lagana
rut kitni suhani hai
ghata jhumti hai
kuch dil ki tarah mast hawa jhumati hai
hansti hui kaliyo ke kadam chum rahi hai
aise me koi dard bhara geet sunana
mere dil ki duniya hai
tum duniya rachana
tum duniya rachana

biti hui rato ko jara fir se bhulakar
vo prem ki bate kabhi hanskar kabhi gakar
in mast nigaho ko
in mast nigaho ko
nigaho se milakar
ik teeer kalejhe pe aur chalana
dokhe ki ye duniya hai
yaha dil na lagana
tum dil na lagana

jinda hu apni kasame tamanna ke sahare
dube nahi ab tak meri aasha ke tare
ummid ke toofan mohabbat ke kinare
tum chaho to ho jayega mera bhi tikana
dokhe ki ye duniya hai
yaha dil na lagana
tum dil na lagana
bedard jamana are bedard jamana
dokhe ki ye duniya hai
yaha dil na lagana
tum dil na lagana

Day #21, Song #61
Akhiyan milake jiya bharmake

Ladies and gentlemen: Happy Holi.

Today, we shall be completing three weeks with DN Madhok. And, on this auspicious occasion of Holi, we have M Sadiq’s 1944 movie Ratan starring Karan Dewan, Swarna Lata, Amir Bano, Basant Kumar, Chanda, Gulab, Manju, Badri Prasad, and Vasti.

This is one single movie that made many those associated with the movie popular.

To start with DN Madhok achieved new heights of lyrical excellence. Naushad the composer started getting fees as Music Director that no one had even heard of before. The movie launched in a huge manner the careers of lead cast Karan Dewan and Swaran Lata. Both Amirbai Karnataki and Zohrabai Ambalewali, amongst the first generation of playback singers got never before recognition.

Just one movie and see its achievements.

Here are the songs that DN Madhok penned and Naushad composed:

1. Ankhiya Mila Ke Jiya Bharma Ke Chale Nahi Jana Zohrabai Ambalewali
2. Sawan Ke Baadlo Unse Ye Ja Kaho Zohrabai Ambalewali, Karan Dewan
3. Aai Diwali Aai Diwali Zohrabai Ambalewali
4. Angdai Teri Hai Bahana Saaf Kah Do Hame
5. Jhuthe Hain Sab Sapane Suhaane
6. O Jaane Wale Balamwa Laut Ke Aa Amirbai Karnataki
7. Rum Jhum Barase Baadaravaa Zohrabai Ambalewali
8. Mil Ke Bichhad Gayi Ankhiya Amirbai Karnataki
9. Jab Tum Hi Chale Pardesh Karan Dewan
10. Pardesi Baalma Baadal Aaya Zohrabai Ambalewali

What a treat, you will tell me. What a treat, I shall answer in response.

This treat is going to continue for three days as I don’t know which one to leave out!

Lets start with Song #1. This was included by me as Song #16 under Songs that Tug at Your Emotions.

Please enjoy the write up and song: Akhiyan milake jiya bharmake….(You will know all that you need to know about the song, actors involved, movie etc if you click on the link.

Day #21, Song #62
Aayi diwali, aayi diwali

Happy Holi again.

Lets congratulate ourselves on our good luck that we have today arrived on the best movie in the career of DN Madhok and in the career of so many others associated with the movie.

From the ten songs of the movie, we have decided to take nine for three days.

If the first song tonight was given by me three years earlier in the Songs that Tug at Your Emotions, the second song was included by me as Song #100 on the day of Diwali in Raaga Based Song of the Day series.

Please enjoy the song and my write-up by clicking on the link.

Day #21, Song #63
Sawan ke baadlo unse ye jaa kaho

Happy Holi for the last time tonight.

We have come to the last song of the 1944 M Sadiq movie Rattan starring Karan Dewan and Swaran Lata.

Naushad composed ten songs of DN Madhok for this movie and they became so popular that he started charging Rupees 25000 as his fees. During those days, that was one third of the production cost of the movie!

After listening to the songs, we know what gems these are.

The third song tonight is yet another favourite of mine. It was sung by Karan Dewan for himself and Zohrabai Ambalewali for Swaran Lata.

Please enjoy: Sawan ke baadlo unse ye jaa kaho…

sawan ke badlo unse ye ja kaho
sawan ke badlo unse ye ja kaho
takdir me yahi tha sajan mere
na ro sawan ke badlo

ghanghor ghatavo mat jhum ke aavo
ghanghor ghatavo mat jhum ke aavo
yaad unki satayegi tum jhum yaha na ho
sawan ke badlo

jis din se juda hum hai
aankhe meri purnam hai
aankhe meri purnam hai
jis din se juda hum hai
aankhe meri purnam hai
aankhe meri purnam hai
ro-ro ke mai mar jau dukh teri daya ko
sawan ke badlo

chedo na hame aake barso kahi aur jake
barso kahi aur jake chedo na hame aake
barso kahi aur jake barso kahi aur jake
wo din na rahe apne rate na rahi wo
sawan ke badlo
sawan ke badlo unse ye ja kaho

Day #22, Song #64

Second day of taking up songs of the 1944 M Sadiq movie Rattan. There were ten songs of DN Madhok that were composed by Naushad Ali. We took up three on the first day:

1. Akhiyan milake jiya bharmake sung by Zohrabai Ambalewali.
2. Ayi diwali ayi diwali sung by Zohrabai Ambalewali.
3. Sawan ke badlo unse ye jaa kaho sung by Zohrabai Ambalewali and Karan Dewan.

Lets take up the fourth song also sung by Zohrabai Ambalewali.

Please enjoy: Rumjhum barse baadarva…

ho rum jhum barse badarva, mast hawaye aayi
piya ghar aaja aaja, piya ghar aaja

Day #22, Song #65
Jab tum hi chale pardes

Today is the second day when you are enjoying the songs of 1944 M Sadiq (Kardar Production) movie Rattan starring Karan Dewan and Swarnalata.

It is high time you learn what the movie was all about:

“Govind (Karan Dewan) and Gauri (Swarnalata) have grown up together as best friends, but it is obvious that they are in love. However, there is a clash of castes as Govind is a Bania while Gauri is a Rajput. An old woman, Gangu, is particularly against their love, and suggests that Gauri marry Gangu’s own brother, Rattan. In the blink of an eye, Gauri and Rattan are married. But Rattan begins to feel guilty of ruining Gauri’s life; a girl about half his age, in love with another man.”

Here is the fifth song. This was sung by Karan Dewan for himself.

Please enjoy: Jab tum hi chale pardes…

jab tum hi chale pardesh
laga kar thesh o pritam pyara
dunia me kaun hamara
jab tum hi chale pardesh
laga kar thesh o pritam pyara
dunia me kaun hamara

jab badal ghir ghir aayenge
bite din yad dilayenge
jab badal ghir ghir aayenge
bite din yad dilayenge
phir tum hi kaho kit jaye nasib mara
dunia me kaun hamara
phir tum hi kaho kit jaye nasibo mara
dunia me kaun hamara
jab tum hi chale pardesh
laga kar thesh o pritam pyara
dunia me kaun hamara

aankho se pani bahta hai
dil ro ro ro kar ye kahta hai
aankho se pani bahta hai
dil ro ro ro kar ye kahta hai
jab tum hi ne sajan hamse kiya kinara
dunia me kaun hamara
jab tum hi ne sajan hamse kiya kinara
dunia me kaun hamara
jab tum hi chale pardesh
laga kar thesh o pritam pyara
dunia me kaun hamara
jab tum hi chale pardesh
laga kar thesh o pritam pyara
dunia me kaun hamara

Day #22, Song #66
O jaanewale balamwa laut ke aa

On the second day of taking up songs of the 1944 M Sadiq movie Rattan starring Karan Dewan and Swarnalata, we are on to the sixth song and hence on to the last of the three tonight.

This was sung by Amirbai Karnataki and Shyam Kumar for Azurie and Krishna Kumar.

Please enjoy: O jaanewale balamwa laut ke aa…

o jane wale balamwa laut ke aa laut ke aa
ja mai na tera balamwa bewafa bewafa
o jane wale balamwa laut ke aa laut ke aa
ja mai na tera balamwa bewafa bewafa

tere bin mera jiya lage na kahi bhi piya
haye lage na yad nahi chode teri
dunia andheri meri ab jau kaha
dil ko le sarka hai dard piya laut ke aa laut ke aa
dil ko le sarka hai dard piya laut ke aa laut ke aa
o jane wale balamwa laut ke aa laut ke aa

o jane wale balamwa laut ke aa laut ke aa
ja mai na tera balamwa bewafa bewafa

Day #23, Song #67
Angdai teri hai bahana saaf keh do hamen

How well Deena Nath Madhok did can be viewed from the statistics so far: Starting with his career in 1932 with the movie Radhy Shyam (one year after the first talkie Alam Ara came on the Indian scene), we have gone through 332 songs from 33 movies and already I have given you 66 and with today’s songs I would have given you 69!

In the 13th year of his career, we came across M Sadiq’s (AR Kardar production) 1944 movie Rattan starring Karan Dewan and Swarnalata and I decided to do something rare: I am giving you nine out of the ten songs of the movie penned by him and composed by Naushad Ali.

My selection of next song from the movie is a song sung by Manju.

Manju Gupta acted as bhabhi to Swarnalata as Gauri after Gauri is married to an old man Rattan (Manju’s brother) because a Rajput (Gauri) shouldn’t be marrying a Bania (Karan Dewan).

Rattan, of course, is a good man. He doesn’t consummate the marriage because he feels that she deserves someone much younger than he. Gauri and Rattan remain awake. Manju, misunderstands Gauri’s yawn because of her sleeplessness and misery and sings this song; a highly insensitive song.

Hats off to DN Madhok and Naushad to have thought of this to accentuate Gauri’s extreme sadness.

Truly, if you ask me as to why am I giving you nine out of ten songs of the movie, it is because the songs are not because of the movie; the movie is because of the songs! This is what DN Madhok and Naushad were able to do.

You would rarely find a movie that has a story being carried forward because of songs.

Please enjoy Manju singing: Angdai teri hai bahana saaf keh do hamen…

angdayi teri hai bahana saaf kah do hame ke
jana jana
angdayi teri hai bahana saaf kah do hame ke
jana jana

teri uthti jawani pukare tera joban kisi ko lalkare
teri uthti jawani pukare tera joban kisi ko lalkare
dil ki dhak dhak dil ki dhak dhak ye kah rahi hai
chori chori balam yaha ana chori chori
balam yaha ana
dil ki dhak dhak ye kah rahi hai
chori chori balam yaha ana chori chori
balamyaha ana
angdayi teri hai bahana saaf kah do hame ke
jana jana

man man me hame na galiya do lo
chali mai yaha se aji o o
man man me hame na galiya do lo
chali mai yaha se aji o o
koi kab tak koi kab tak aiso ke paas aye
jinke dil me auro ka ho thikana
koi kab tak aiso ke paas aye
jinke dil me auro ka ho thikana
angdayi teri hai bahana saaf kah do hame ke
jana jana

jhuthi nindiya ankho me cha gayi hai
yad piya pyare ki a rahi hai
jhuthi nindiya ankho me cha gayi hai
yad piya pyare ki a rahi hai
wo jo nas nas me wo jo nas nas me bas rahe hai
ye adaye unhe bhi dikhlana
wo jo nas nas me bas rahe hai
ye adaye unhe bhi dikhlana
angdayi teri hai bahana saaf kah do hame ke
jana jana
angdayi teri hai bahana saaf kah do hame ke
jana jana

Day #23, Song #68
Mil ke bichhad gayin akhiyan

I hope you are happily lapping up the songs of the 1944 M Sadiq movie (an AR Kardar production): Rattan.

Now the sad part: I shall be giving you only two more and I am sure, just like me, you will feel a void. However, the good news is that the next movie of DN Madhok: Pehle Aap also has songs composed by Naushad Ali. So cheer up!

Now let me tell you about the next song. If you listened to Ayi Diwali, you would have noticed that Karan Dewan as Govind visits her with sweets sent by her mother even though she is married to an old man Rattan.

Rattan’s people think of Karan Dewan as her brother from maika! Can you think of a greater irony?

Now, the sasural people, ask Gauri’s brother (!!) Govind to stay longer in their house. However, before returning, Govind has a sad meeting with him. Naturally, the very first thing she asks him is as to why he came to look her up when she had broken all contact with her maika. She had promised to go back to maika only after Govind too gets married!

He promises that if she was happily married, he to would. As he leaves, in a masterstroke by M Sadiq, DN Madhok and Naushad, they make a maalin sing in the voice of Amirbai Karnataki, to indirectly express Gauri’s feeling.

Being a sad song, this is a favourite with me.

Please enjoy Amirbai Karnataki singing: Mil ke bichhad gayin akhiyan….

mil ke bichad gayi ankhiya
haye rama mil ke bichad gayi ankhiya
mil ke bichad gayi ankhiya
haye rama mil ke bichad gayi ankhiya

mushkil se wo din bhulaye the hamne
phir aake cheda balam ne
mushkil se wo din bhulaye the hamne
phir aake cheda balam ne
phir se dhadak gayi chatiya
dhadak gayi chatiya
haye rama mil ke bichad gayi ankhiya
mil ke bichad gayi ankhiya
haye rama mil ke bichad gayi ankhiya

rote hai naina jiya talmalaye
jao koi unko laye
rote hai naina jiya talmalaye
jao koi unko laye
kaise bitau din ratiya
bitau din ratiya
haye rama mil ke bichad gayi ankhiya
mil ke bichad gayi ankhiya
haye rama mil ke bichad gayi ankhiya

Day #23, Song #69
Pardesi balama badal aaya

With the last song that I shared Milke bichhad gayin akhiyan, the cup of my sadness got full. It is overflowing now since we have come to the last song (the 9th one out of 10) being shared by me.

However, I had thought of it already (don’t I always?). So, I have kept a joyous song from the happy days between Swarnalata and Karan Dewan.

This too was sung by Zohrabai Ambalewali that makes me leave one comment for you: in those days of Shamshad Begum and Noor Jehan and Lata Mangeshkar, just think of what Naushad could achieve with Zohrabai Ambalewali, Karan Dewan, Manju and Amirbai Karnataki! Also, just think of M Sadiq and AR Kardar achieving with Karan Dewan and Swarnalata! They made a memorable movie with unheard of cast and singers and made all of them very popular.

Please enjoy Zohrabai Ambalewali singing: Pardesi balama badal aaya…

pardeshi balma badal aaya
pardeshi balma badal aaya
tere bin kachhu na bhaya ke jiya jaya
tere bin kachhu na bhaya ke jiya jaya
pardeshi balma badal aaya
pardeshi balma badal aaya

aise na beet jae balam jawaniya ho jawaniya
aavo tumhe sunae dil ki kahaniya ho kahaniya
dil raat din pukare haye aa ke jiya jaya
dil raat din pukare haye aa ke jiya jaya
pardeshi balma badal aaya
pardeshi balma badal aaya

nain bhar aayenge more jiya dole na ho dole na
bhul hai kisi se kabhi metha bol bolna bol bolna
rah rah ke teri yaad aaye aa ke jiya jaya
rah rah ke teri yaad aaye aa ke jiya jaya
pardeshi balma badal aaya
pardeshi balma badal aaya

garaj rahe badalwa bijali muskat hai muskat hai
aise me ruth ruth jana buri baat hai buri baat hai
fisle ye jiya tal malaya ke jiya jaya
fisle ye jiya tal malaya ke jiya jaya
pardeshi balma badal aaya
pardeshi balma badal aaya

Day #24, Song #70
Hindustan ke ham hain Hindustan hamara

We’ve had a veritable treat in the last three days in listening to nine songs of M Sadiq movie Rattan starring Karan Dewan and Swaranalata; the songs having been composed by Naushad who had, by this time, emerged as the best Music Director in Hindi films.

(Courtesy: Cinestaan.com)

Pahle Aap was the next movie in 1944, an AR Kardar movie starring Shamim, Wasti and Jeevan.

Naushad, yet another time, composed following songs penned by DN Madhok:

1. Hindustan Ke Hum Hai Hindustan Hamara Mohammed Rafi
2. Tum Dilli Me Mai Aagre Me Mohammed Rafi
3. Bekabar Jaag Zaraa Kisaki Aulaad Hai Tu Mohammed Rafi
4. More Saiyya Ji Ne Bheji Chunri Zohrabai Ambalewali
5. Aankh Bhar Aayi Zohrabai Ambalewali
6. Tore Naina Me Jiya Kho Gaya Zohrabai Ambalewali
7. Ek Bar Unhe Mila De Phir Meri Tauba Maula Mohammed Rafi
8. Kale Kale Badal Aaye Zohrabai Ambalewali
9. Dil Me Aag Lagane Wale Zohrabai Ambalewali
10. Aa Jaa Kahi Door Chale Zohrabai Ambalewali
11. Bekhabar Jag Zara (Part 2)

Now for the first time you would have noticed some of DN Madhok – Naushad Ali songs having been sung by Mohammad Rafi. Rafi’s first song was in the same year composed by Shyam Sunder for Gaon Ki Gori: Aji dil ho kaabu mein to dildar ki aisi taisi, a duet with GM Durrani.

Therefore, Hindustan ke ham hain Hindustan hamara was his first solo and first song with Naushad. Worth listening to.

Please enjoy: Hindustan ke ham hain Hindustan hamara…

hindustan ke hum hai hindustan hamara
hindu muslim dono ki aankho ka tara
hindustan ke hum hai hindustan hamara
hindu muslim dono ki aankho ka tara

jara hari khetiya jhum rahi hai jhum rahi hai
jhuk ke janni ko chum rahi hai chum rahi hai
sab jag se uncha sab jag se nyara
hindustan ke hum hai hindustan hamara
hindu muslim dono ki aankho ka tara

jaha ped gaye hai aahan kale aahan kale
jaha hue kalwi wale kalwi wale
nanak ki bhumi guru ka dwara
inki chaya me hai desh hamara
hindustan ke hum hai hindustan hamara
hindu muslim dono ki aankho ka tara

lo chale sipahi banke bharti banke bharti
ab aaye samne himmat kiski himmat kiski
har maidan jeeta har maidan mara
hindustan ke hum hai hindustan hamara
hindu muslim dono ki aankho ka tara
hindustan ke hum hai hindustan hamara
hindu muslim dono ki aankho ka tara

Day #24, Song #71
Tum Dilli main Agre mein

We have just started listening to songs from the 1944 AR Kardar movie Pahle Aap starring Shamim, Wasti and Jeevan. Eleven of these songs were composed by Naushad including the first ever song of Mohammad Rafi with Naushad.

The second song too has been sung by Mohammad Rafi and Shyam Kumar.

Please enjoy: Tum Dilli main Agre mein…

tum dilli main aagra dil se nikle haye fasla
fasla sau kosh ka hum me sawan bito jaye
tum bhi sache main bhi sachi
badal ghir ghir aaye
meri ma meri maa ye na samjhe
chhore ka dil sau bal khaye

dekh mar jaye na tera sajan kahi
kya kahu main piya bat bas ki nahi
maa ko dam deke aa jao
meri kasam jiya chain paye

tum bhi sache main bhi sachi
badal ghir ghir aaye
meri ma meri maa ye na samjhe
chhore ka dil sau bal khaye

aas roti hai aur dil paresan hai
tera sajan koi dam ka mehman hai
aake surat dikha jao meri kasam
kale badal aaye
aake surat dikha jao meri kasam
kale badal aaye fasla fasla sau kosh ka
hum me sawan bito jaye fasla
fasla sau kosh ka hum me sawan bito jaye
tum dilli mai aagre dil se nikle haye fasla
fasla sau kosh ka humme sawan bito jaye

tum bhi sache mai bhi sachi
badal ghir ghir aaye
meri ma meri maa ye na samjhe
chhore ka dil sau bal khaye

Day #24, Song #72
Ek baar unhen mila de phir meri tauba tauba

And for the last song tonight of 1944 AR Kardar movie Pahle Aap starring Shamin, Wasti and Jeevan.

As I said, eleven songs of the movie were composed by Naushad including the first ever song of Mohammad Rafi with Naushad and the first to be released in a movie.

The next song again has been sung by Shyam and Mohammad Rafi.

Please enjoy: Ek baar unhen mila de phir meri tauba tauba…

ek bar unhe mila de ek bar unhe mila de
phir meri tauba maula phir meri tauba
ab to lagi bujha de aji dil ki lagi bujha de
phir meri tauba maula phir meri tauba

waro ki bala se bijli chamke
ya ghata chhaye gadha bole kahi ya kan me
koyal ki kuk aaye wo kya jane papiha
kisliye pihu ki dhun gaye
jara joru ki furkat me tadapto ki suno
ek bar unhe mila de phir meri tauba maula
phir meri tauba ab to lagi bujha de
aji dil ki lagi bujha de phir meri tauba maula
phir meri tauba

har ek lab ke daman hai mere nate
kasam hamari jo gaye na joruo wale
ek bar unhe mila de phir meri tauba maula
phir meri tauba ab to lagi bujhade
aji dil ki lagi bujha de phir meri tauba maula
phir meri tauba

tum hardum nind me hum aur jagana tera
rat ko loriya de deke sulana tera
yaad aata hai to dil roke yahi kahta hai
phir meri tauba maula phir meri tauba
ab to lagi bujha de aji dil ki lagi bujha de
phir meri tauba maula phir meri tauba

I am sorry for the long break caused to a large extent by difficult times that we are passing through. But, here I am, hopefully to stay.

His only movie in 1945 was Shirin Farhad. It was the second time a movie with this name was made. The first time it was made was in 1931, the second talkie movie after Alam Ara.

The story of Shirin Farhad owes to Persian poet Nizami Ganjavi. He wrote a fictional love story between Shirin who was later to become the queen of Persia and Khosrow. Nizami Ganjavi also wrote Laila Majnu.

The movie was directed by Prahlad Dutta and starred Jayant, Ragini, Gyani, Gulam Mohammad and Zahur Shah.

Pandit Amarnath and Rasheed Attre composed following songs penned by Deena Nath Madhok:

1. Aramaanon Ki Basti Men Shamshad Begum
2. Mai Kya Hu Bhala Ye Batao
3. Sun Baat Kisi Mastane Ki
4. Ye Mere Pyar Ka Ghar S. D. Batish, Shamshad Begum

chale dil me dard basa ke
kya sukh paya, nain mila ke
chale dil me dard basa ke
mithe mithe bol kisi ke
mithe mithe bol kisi ke
dil me gade aake

meri tarah unke bhi

Sukh leke dukh de gaya

That brings us to the year of independence: 1947. It was the 16th year of DN Madhok’s career and he had two movies in which he wrote songs: Bela and Parwana.

Bela was a Chaturbhujh Doshi movie starring Jairaj, Nigar Sultana, Rekha, P T Iqbal, S N Tripathi, Usha B R Sharma, and Mast Mohd.

Paidi Jairaj was, of course, winner of Dadasaheb Phalke Award in the year 1980, the 12th personality to have won this award after the first award was bestowed upon Devika Rani in 1969.

The composer was Bulo C Rani and he composed the following songs of DN Madhok:

1. Bhago Ki Raat Re Pade Barsat Re Zohrabai Ambalewali
2. Dekhi Teri Duniya O Duniya Wale Zohrabai Ambalewali
3. More Gali Aa Re Balam Nanhi Si Jaan Hai Meri Zohrabai Ambalewali
4. Peepal Ke Patte Se Chikni A.R. Oza, Zohrabai Ambalewali

10. Thode Dino Ki Zindagani Zohrabai Ambalewali

We shall be taking up three songs; two today and one tomorrow.

Lets start with this beautiful song sung by Zohrabai Ambalewali.

Please enjoy: Sukh leke dukh de gaya…

sukh le ke dukh de gaya
wo jo humara dil le gaya
wo jo humara dil le gaya
sukh le ke dukh de gaya
wo jo humara dil le gaya
wo jo humara dil le gaya

abhi bhare dil ko samjhaya
phir yaad aayi fir bhar aaya
abhi bhare dil ko samjhaya
phir yaad aayi fir bhar aaya
dard anokhe de gaya
wo jo humara dil le gaya
wo jo humara dil le gaya
sukh le ke dukh de gaya
wo jo humara dil le gaya
wo jo humara dil le gaya

labon ko haye aakh ka pani
dil ko mithi pir suhani
labon ko haye aakh ka pani
dil ko mithi pir suhani
chhail nishani de gaya
wo jo humara dil le gaya
wo jo humara dil le gaya
sukh le ke dukh de gaya

Author: Sunbyanyname

I have done a long stint in the Indian Navy that lasted for nearly thirty seven years; I rose as far as my somewhat rebellious and irreverent nature allowed me to. On retirement, in Feb 2010, the first thing that occurred to me, and those around me, was that I Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (you will find an article with this title in this blog) and hadn't lost all my noodles and hence thought of a blog titled 'This 'n That'. I later realised that every third blog is called 'This 'n That' and changed the name to 'Sunbyanyname'. I detest treading the beaten track. This blog offers me to air 'another way' of looking at things. The idea is not just to entertain but also to bring about a change. Should you feel differently, you are free to leave your comments. You can leave comments even when you agree and want to share your own experience about the topic of the blog post. Impudent or otherwise, I have never been insousciant and I am always concerned about the betterment of community, nation and the world. I hope the visitors of this blog would be able to discern it.
