THE BEST SONGS OF KAIFI AZMI, A GREAT LYRICIST AND POET – PART II

In the Great Lyricists series, we had started with our third lyricist (not in any particular order) Kaifi Azmi. In the first part of ‘The Best Songs Of Kaifi Azmi, A Great Lyricist And Poet’, after a brief introduction and giving you, as I usually do, three of my favourite songs of his; viz, Jaane kya dhoondati rehti hain ye aankhen mujh mein from 1961 movie Shola Aur Shabnam, his first ghazal that he wrote at the age of eleven: Itna to zindagi mein kisi ki khalal padhe, and the 1973 movie Hanste Zakhm song: Aaj socha to aansu bhar aaye, I settled down to giving you his songs chronologically. I, thereafter covered his best songs from his first in 1951 movie Buzdil (Rote rote guzr gayi raat re) to Main yeh soch kar uske dar se utha tha from the 1964 Chetan Anand movie Haqeeqat.

I am a lyrical man; words of the songs are often the most important part of the songs for me. Indeed, on the Facebook I have a page titled ‘Lyrical’ to honour and pay tribute to various lyricists. I have several (almost a dozen) posts on  my blog on my favourite lyricist and poet Shakeel Badayuni. The following posts about Kaifi Azmi have been reconstructed from the same page. Kaifi Azmi was the master lyricist who could give vent to the most powerful thoughts and strongest emotions by using the simplest of the words.

We resume after giving you two songs from 1964 movie Haqeeqat in Part I.

Song #23
Zara si ahat hoti hai to dil sochata hai kahin ye woh to nahin…

And it is not as if the soldiers in Ladakh in the 1964 movie Haqeeqat were missing their beloveds. The beloveds too had their share of giving vent to their emotions in the song. And, Kaifi Azmi, who was ever sensitive towards the women, brought out those emotions so well in this song sung by Lata Mangeshkar.

Naturally, a song like this has to be composed in the Raag of the evenings: Raag Kalyan and Madan Mohan did exactly that with the Tal being Kaherava.

The team that made the song: Chetan Anand (Director), Priya Rajvansh (Heroine), Lata Mangeshkar (Playback Singer for Priya), Madan Mohan (Composer and Music Director) and Kaifi Azmi (Lyricist)

Please enjoy above all the powerful lyrics of an evening song: Zara si ahat hoti hai to dil sochata hai kahin ye woh to nahin…

zaraa sii aahaT hotI hai to dil sochataa hai
kahii.n ye vo to nahii.n, kahii.n ye vo to nahii.n
zaraa sI aahaT hotI hai …

chhup ke siine me.n koI jaise sadaa detaa hai
shaam se pahale diyaa dil kA jalaa detaa hai
hai usii kii ye sadaa, hai usii kii ye adaa
kahii.n ye vo to nahii.n …

shakl phiratii hai nigaaho.n me.n vohii pyaarii sI
merI nas-nas me.n machalane lagI chi.ngArI sI
chhuu gaI jism meraa kisake daaman kii havaa
kahii.n ye vo to nahii.n …

Song #24
Kar chale ham fida jaan-o-tan saathiyo….

If you noticed the total absence of any vegetation in the sandy hills of Ladakh in the last three songs, it is only because a few millenia ago, those hills were under the sea! During those days, it would have required the Navy to reach there instead of the Army!

Here is our last song from the 1964 movie Haqeeqat; a song that has been etched into eternity. It is the song that makes your hair stand on their ends with the intensity of its emotions. Natuarlly, you are never the same person after watching the song.

So, finally, the soldier says adieu after fighting a valiant battle that was so much loaded against him due to the bad international politics of that era by Nehru and his cronies. And that’s what Haqeeqat (The Truth or the Reality) was all about.

Please enjoy Mohammad Rafi sing on the lyrics of Kaifi Azmi and composition of Madan Mohan: Kar chale ham fida jaan-o-tan saathiyo….

(kar chale ham fidaa jaan-o-tan saathiyo.n
ab tumhaare havaale vatan saathiyo.n ) – (2)

saa.Ns thamatii ga_ii nabz jamatii ga_ii
phir bhii ba.Dhate kadam ko na rukane diyaa
kaT gaye sar hamaare to kuchh Gam nahii.n
sar himaalay kaa hamane na jhukane diyaa
marate marate rahaa baa.Nkaapan saathiyo.n, ab tumhaare …

zi.ndaa rahane ke mausam bahut hai.n magar
jaan dene kii rut roz aatii nahii.n
husn aur ishq dono.n ko rusavaa kare
vo javaanii jo khuu.N me.n nahaatii nahii.n

raam bhii tum tumhii.n lakshmaN saathiyo.n, ab tumhaare …

Song #25
Log peete hain ladkhadaate hain….

We just finished with the memorable songs of the 1964 Chetan Anand movie Haqeeqat in which Kaifi Azmi paired with Madan Mohan to create songs that haven’t faded away in popularity even after 52 years of their release.

Lets now get on with the 1965 Pinaki Bhushan Mukherjee movie named Faraar that starred Anil Chatterjee, Balraj Sahni, Helen, KN Singh, Sahbnam, Leela Chitnis, and Tarun Bose in the following roles:

Anil Chatterjee … Shankar Choudhry
Balraj Sahni … Detective Officer
Shabnam … Neela ‘Neelu’
K.N. Singh … Public Prosecutor
Tarun Bose … Shyam Sunder
Helen … Dancer / Singer
Leela Chitnis … Mrs. Choudhry

The movie was called Faraar because of the folowing story:

Calcutta-based Naval Officer Shankar Choudhry lives a wealthy lifestyle with his doctor dad, and mom. One day while returning home in a cab home from a club, he comes across an injured man, Shekhar, takes him home, has his dad nurse look after him, as well as goes to his home to notify his sister, Neela. Both Neela and he fall in love with each other. When Shekhar recovers, he returns home, and it is then that Shankar notices a change in Neela. When he questions her, she refuses to answer. Then Shekhar is shot and killed in his apartment. A Police Dectective Officer assigned to this homicide – has a lighter with the word ‘S’ engraved on it. This leads him to suspect three persons: One is a gangster named Shyam Sunder, second a delinquent runaway child, Sushil Kumar alias Daaku, who lives with his maternal uncle and aunt; and the third is none other than Shankar Choudhry himself.

The songs of the movie were penned by Kaifi and composed by Hemant Kumar:

1. Dil\-e\-naadaa.N ko sa.Nbhaaluu.N to chale jaa_iyegaa.
2. Pyaar kii daastaa.N tum suno to kahe.n.
3. Kaise bane dil ki baat.
4. Log peete hain.
5. Mera qatil.
6. Ye dil.

What a famous song, song #4 was! The beauty of the song was lent not just by the lyrics that are so superb, but also that Hemant Kumar sang on his own composition.

Please enjoy: Log peete hain ladkhadaate hain….

log pite hai ladkhadate hai
dil se dunia ka gam mitate hai
log pite hai ladkhadate hai
dil se dunia ka gam mita te hai
ek hum hai ki teri mahfil me
pyase aate hai pyase jate hai

khush hai sab or khushi nahi milti
jinda hai jindagi nahi milti
jal rahe hai chirag ummido ke
jal rahe hai chirag ummido ke
or kahi roshni nahi milti
roshni ka fareb khate hai
roshni ka fareb khate hai
pyase aate hai pyase jate hai
log pite hai ladkhadate hai

mahki mahki hui kada ko salam
bahki bahki hui hawa ko salam
in baharo se to bhali hai fiza
in baharo se to bhali hai fiza
in baharo ki har kada ko salam
dil me sau jakham muskurate hai
pyase aate hai pyase jate hai
log pite hai lad khadate hai
dil se dunia ka gum mita te hai
ek hum hai ke teri mahfil me
pyase aate hai pyase jate hai

Song #26
Dil-e-nadaan ko sambhalun to chale jayiega….

Here is the second song from the 1965 movie Faraar that became popular and has excellent lyrics. It has been sung by Lata Mangeshkar.

The song has been picturised on Leela Chitnis singing for the hero Tarun Bose.

Please enjoy: Dil-e-nadaan ko sambhalun to chale jayiega….

dil-e-naadaa.N ko sa.Nbhaaluu.N to chale jaaiyegaa

Song #27
Tera husn rahe mera ishq rahe…..

The only other movie of 1965 for which Kaifi Azmi penned the songs was the Hrishikesh Mukherjee movie Do Dil starring Biswajeet, Rajshri, Mumtaz and Pran.

Once again, Hemant Kumar combined with Kaifi Azmi to create some delightful songs:

1. Tera husn rahe mera ishq rahe.
2. Pyaar hirni ban ban dhaye koi shikari aaye re.
3. Kaanto mein fasaa anchal, zulfon mein fasaa ye dil.
4. Saara mora kajra chhudaya tune.
5. Ram Ram japna praaya maal apna.
6. Man mora naache tan mora naache.
7. Holi Re Holi, Bam Babam Bam Lahri Lehar Lehar Nadiya Gehri

Lets take up the first one sung by Mohammad Rafi for Biswajeet.

Song #28
Aaj ki kaali ghata, mast matvaali ghata….

The 1966 Basu Bhattacharya movie Uski Kahani had something special about it. Kaifi Azmi‘s lyrics were composed by Kanu Roy of Anubhav (1971) fame. There were two songs in the movie; one was sung by Geeta Dutt and the other by my favourite Hemant Kumar:

1. Aaj ki kaali ghata, mast matvaali ghata – Geeta Dutt.
2. Tera hai jahan saara apna – Hemant Kumar.

Lets listen to the Geeta Dutt one.

Kaifi Azmi with Geeta Dutt (Pic courtesy: geetadutt.com)

The song is very much in the same genre as the other Geeta/Kanu combinations from “Anubhav”, very soft, very melodious and with minimal instruments. Geeta sounds great although one does detect a tired quality to her voice, which is representative of this song being after the death of Guru Dutt in 1964. The lyrics are Gulzaresque in style in that there is little rhyming either in the words or in the rhythm. The lyricist however is Kaifi Azmi and Kanu Roy does a marvellous job of maintaining the mood of the song.

Please enjoy: Aaj ki kaali ghata, mast matvaali ghata….

aaj kI kaalii ghaTaa, mast-matavaalii ghaTaa
mujhase kahatii hai ki pyaasaa hai koI
kaun pyaasaa hai, mujhe kyaa maaluum
aaj kii kaalii ghaTaa …

pyaas ke naam se jii Darataa hai
is ilzaam se jii Darataa hai
shauk-e-badanaam se jii Darataa hai
miiThii nazaro.n me.n samaayaa hai koI
kyo.n samaayaa hai, mujhe kyA maaluum
aaj kii kaalii ghaTaa …

pyaasii aa.Nkho.n me.n muhabbat leke
la.Dakha.Daa jaane kii ijaazat leke
mujhase bevajah shikaayat leke
dil kii dahaliiz tak aayaa hai koI
kaun AyA hai, mujhe kyA maaluum
aaj kii kaalii ghaTaa …

kuchh mazaa aane lagaa jiine me.n
jaag uThaa dard koI siine me.n
mere ehasaas ke aaine me.n
ik saayaa nazar aataa hai koI
kisakaa saayaa hai, mujhe kyaa maaluum
aaj kii kaalii ghaTaa …

zindagii pahale nA thii itanI hasiin
aur agar thii to mujhe yaad nahii.n
yahii afasaanaa nA ban jaaye kahii.n
kuchh nigaaho.n se sunaataa hai koI
kyaa sunaataa hai, mujhe kyA maaluum
aaj kii kaalii ghaTaa …

Song #29
Ye bhor jahan se aati hai….

In the other movie of 1966, for which Kaifi Azmi penned the lyrics, Kaifi Azmi was back with Madan Mohan after the 1964 movie Haqeeqat. Zul Velani’s Dak Ghar was produced under Children’s Film Society of India and starred Balraj Sahni, Sachin Kumar with Sharmila Tagore.

The movie had the following songs:

1. Kyu Roj Akela Jaata Hai Ae Suraj Le Chal Saath Mujhe
Bhupinder Singh Madan Mohan Kaifi Azmi
2. Jhan Jhan Baaje Iktaara, Raja Ka Mai Harakaara
Sushma Shrestha Madan Mohan Kaifi Azmi

Song #30
Badal jaaye agar maali….

I am sure you must have been captivated by the gentleness of the music of the last two songs: one from Uski Kahani composed by Kanu Roy and the other from Dak Ghar composed by Madan Mohan. These are the kind of songs you would listen to in silence when you are by yourself.

The next movie for which Kaifi Azmi penned the songs was the 1966 Shahid Latif movie Baharen Phir Bhi Aayengi starring Dharmendra in the midst of a triangle, with Mala Sinha and Tanuja.

Kaifi Azmi paired with OP Nayyar to create some fine songs, whilst some of the credit for the songs is also shared by Anjaan, Aziz Kashmiri, Shewan Rizvi, and SH Bihari.

Have a look:

1. Aap ke haseen rukh pe – Anjaan.
2. Badal jaaye agar maali – Kaifi Azmi.
3. Koi kehde kehde kehde zamaane se jaa ke – Aziz Kashmiri.
4. Dil to pehle se madhosh hai – Shewan Rizvi.
5. Suno suno Miss Chatterjee – Anjaan.
6. Woh haske mile hamse ham pyaar samajh baithe – SH Bihari.

Lets listen to the one penned by Kaifi Azmi and sung by Mahendra Kapoor, on the composition of OP Nayyar; this being the title song of the movie.

Please enjoy: Badal jaaye agar maali….

badal jaye agar mali chaman hota nahi khali
bahare phir bhi ati hai bahare phir bhi ayegi
badal jaye agar mali chaman hota nahi khali

thakan kaisi ghutan kaisi chal apani dhun me diwane
thakan kaisi ghutan kaisi chal apani dhun me diwane
khila le phul kanto me saja le apane virane
khila le phul kanto me saja le apane virane
hawae ag bhadakae fizae zahar barasae
bahare phir bhi ati hai bahare phir bhi ayegi
badal jaye agar mali chaman hota nahi khali

adhere kya ujale kya na ye apane na wo apane
adhere kya ujale kya na ye apane na wo apane
tere kam ayege pyare tere arama tere sapane
tere kam ayege pyare tere arama tere sapane
zamana tujhase ho baraham na aye rah par mausam
bahare phir bhi ati hai bahare phir bhi ayegi
badal jaye agar mali chaman hota nahi khali
bahare phir bhi ati hai bahare phir bhi ayegi
badal jaye agar mali chaman hota nahi khali

Song #31
Kuchh dil ne kaha, kuchh bhi nahin….

Before we called it a day yesterday we took up the title song of the 1966 movie Baharen Phir Bhi Aaayengi, the only song in the movie that Kaifi Azmi penned.

Tonight we take a favourite movie of mine for the depth of its songs: the 1966 movie Anupama with Sharmila Tagore in the title role. She grew up being an introvert and isolated person because her father (Tarun Bose) never forgave her for the loss of his wife (she died whilst delivering Sharmila Tagore).

Tarun Bose and Surekha Pandit as Mohan and Aruna Sharma, the parents of Sharmila Tagore as Uma Sharma during their happy days.

Another reason why the songs are dear to me is because after Kohraa and Do Dil, this was yet another movie in which Kaifi Azmi paired with Hemant Kumar to create some memorable songs. Have a look:

1, Dheere Dheere Machal Lata Mangeshkar
2. Kuchh Dil Ne Kaha Lata Mangeshkar
3. Bheegi Bheegi Faza Asha Bhosle
4. Kyon Mujhe Itni Khushi Asha Bhosle
5. Ya Dil Ki Suno Duniyawalo Hemant Kumar

Lets take up Kuchh dil ne kaha. It doesn’t require much to guess that the song has been composed in Raag Bhimpalasi, the raag of late afternoon, having the power to penetrate the mind and echo in its depths for days (compare it with another one composed in the same raag and tal (Kaherava) by Madan Mohan: Naino mein badra chhaye) and you would know what I am talking about. Another similar one that I can think of is the Meera bhajan (another favourite of mine): Ai ri main to prem diwani mera dard na jaane koye. I think you are with me all the way here.

Please enjoy Lata Mangeshkar sing: Kuchh dil ne kaha, kuchh bhi nahin….

kuchh dila ne kahaa, kuchha bhii nahii.n – 2
aisii bhii baate.n hotii hai.n – 2
kuchha dila ne kahaa, kuchha bhii nahii.n

letaa hai dila a.nga.Daa_iyaa.n, isa dila ko samajhaaye koI
aramaana naa aa.Nkhe.n khola de.n, rusavaa naa ho jaaye koI
palako.n kii Tha.nDii seja para, sapano.n kii pariyaa.n sotii hai.n
aisii bhii baate.n hotii hai.n – 2
kuchha dila ne kahaa, kuchha bhii nahii.n

dila kii tassalii ke liye, jhuuThii chamaka jhuuTh nikhaara
jiivana to suunaa hii rahaa, saba samajhe aayii bahaara
kaliyo.n se koii puuchhataa, ha.nsatii hai.n yaa rotii hai.n
aisii bhii baate.n hotii hai.n – 2
kuchha dila ne kahaa, kuchha bhii nahii.n

Song #33
Baharo mera jeevan bhi sanwaaro…..

And that brings us to the 1966 Chetan Anand movie Aakhri Khat, the debut movie of Rajesh Khanna who was later to emerge as a super-star. Indrani Mukherjee acted opposite him.

Here, Kaifi Azmi paired with Khayyam to make some very gentle songs, as was the forte’ of Khayyam:

  1. Aur Kuchh Der Thahar Mohd. Rafi
  2. Baharon Mera Jeevan Bhi Sanwaro Lata Mangeshkar
  3. Mere Chanda Mere Nanhe Lata Mangeshkar
  4. O My Darling Manna Dey
  5. Rut Jawan Jawan Raat Mehrbaan Bhupinder Singh

Baharo mera jeevan bhi sanwaaro is really an unforgettable song from the movie. Khayyam was the master of Raag Pahadi (you would recall his Noorie songs (especially Chori chori koi aaye, which was composed by him in the same Tal Dadra) and he did full justice to this too. Lata ji sang it.

Please enjoy: Baharo mera jeevan bhi sanwaaro…..

bahaaro.n meraa jiivan bhii sa.Nvaaro.n, bahaaro.n
koI Ae kahI.n se, yU.N pukAro, bahAro.n …

tumhii.n se dil ne sIkhaa hai ta.Dapanaa – 2
tumhii.n ko doshh duu.ngii, ai nazaaro.n, bahaaro.n …

sajaao koii kajaraa, laao gajaraa – 2
lachakatii Daaliyo.n tum, phuul vaaro, bahaaro.n …

rachaao mere in hAtho.n me.n meha.ndii – 2

Song #34
Meri awaz suno, pyaar ka raaz suno….

The last song that we had taken up before starting tonight was: Baharo mera jeevan bh sanwaaro from the 1966 movie Aakhri Khat, the debut movie of Rajesh Khanna.

Tonight we start with the 1967 movie Naunihal in which Kaifi Azmi wrote his tribute to the Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru. Indeed, in the movie, the song is picturised on his funeral procession.

The movie starred Balraj Sahni, Sanjeev Kumar and Indrani Mukherjee.

The movie had the following songs, all composed by Madan Mohan:

  1. “Meri Aawaz Suno Pyar ka Raaz Suno” – Mohammad Rafi
  2. “Tumhari Zulf Ke Saye Me Shaam Kar Lunga ” – Mohammad Rafi
  3. “Patthar Ke Bhagwaan Pighal Ja Aaj Pighalanaa Hoga” – Lata Mangeshkar
  4. “Ha Ha Ha Ha Chhutti Aa Gayi” – Kamal Barot, Krishna Kalle
  5. “Na Re Na Re Babu, Na Re Na Re Baba” – Usha Mangeshkar, Lata Mangeshkar
  6. “Rin Rin Tin Tin, Kitna Pyara Pyara Mausam Kitna Pyaara Din” – Krishna Kalle
  7. “Roop Ke Pujaariyo, Husn Ke Bhikaariyon” – Usha Mangeshkar, Lata Mangeshkar
Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru with Mohammad Rafi

Please enjoy: Meri awaz suno, pyaar ka raaz suno….

Zindagii bhar mujhe nafarat sI rAhI ashko.n se (not true, by the way;
Neharu used to cry very easily. Remember the story about him when, after the 1962 Indo-China war, he was at a function where Lata sang “Ai mere vatan ke logo.n,” and he wept publicly? Not that anyone wouldn’t cry listening to that song!) well…..

zindagii bhar mujhe nafarat sI rahI ashko.n se
mere khvaabo.n ko tum ashko.n me.n Dubote kyo.n ho
jo merI tarah jiyaa karate hai.n kab marate hai.n

Song #35
Tumhaari zulf ke saaye mein shaam kar loonga…

We just listened to the 1967 movie Naunihal song penned by Kaifi Azmi as a tribute to Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru and picturised in the movie on his funeral.

Lets turn to the second song from the movie that we want to take up tonight.

This too has been sung by Mohammad Rafi on the composition by Madan Mohan.

Please enjoy: Tumhaari zulf ke saaye mein shaam kar loonga…

tumhaarii zulf ke saaye me.n shaam kar luu.ngaa
safar ik umr kaa pal me.n tamaam kar luu.ngaa

nazar milaaii to puuchhuu.Ngaa ishq kaa a.njaam

Song #36
Aaj rota hai kyun?

His next movie of 1967 Ghar Ka Chirag also starred Indrani Mukherjee making it a hat trick of Indrani Mukherjee movies for his songs: Aakhri Khat (1966), Naunihal (1967) and Ghar Ka Chirag (1967).

Once again, the songs were composed by Madan Mohan:

1. Aao aao tumhen batayun ke maa kya hai.
2. Ik paise ka swaal hai mere daata.
3. Aaj rota hai kyu jaan khota hai kyu?
4. Jaane kaise chori chori baalma ne dekha?
5. Ae mehlon mein rehane waalo.
6. Jaane mera chanda khoya hai kahan?

Lets enjoy Mohammad Rafi sing: Aaj rota hai kyun? picturised on Dev Kumar:

aaj rota hai kyu, aaj rota hai kyu
aaj rota hai kyu jaan khota hai kyu
julm dhata raha muskurata raha
jaal har raste me bichhata raha
fas gaya khud to bechain hota hai kyu
aaj rota hai kyu jaan khota hai kyu

phul tera bhi khilne na paye
baddua hai di baago ne tujhko
phul tera bhi khilne na paye
baddua hai di baago ne tujhko
bhar diya zindagi me andhera
ye saza di hai chirago ne tujhko
tu jo har roshani ko bujhta raha
jaal har raste me bichhata raha
fas gaya khud to bechain hota hai kyu
aaj rota hai kyu jaan khota hai kyu

rahm ki bhikh duniya na tujhko degi
tujhko duniya pe kab rahm aaya
rahm ki bhikh duniya na tujhko degi
tujhko duniya pe kab rahm aaya
pad gaya jis pe tera saya
dil kabhi vo dhadkane na paya
hasne valo rona sikhata raha
jaal har raste me bichhata raha
fas gaya khud to bechain hota hai kyu
aaj rota hai kyu jaan khota hai kyu

use pahle bhi gujare hai jalim
unka anjam kuch to socha hota
use pahele bhi gujare hai jalim
unka anjam kuch to socha hota
dhup kab tak julm ki rahegi
aayegi shyam socha to hota kaise kaise tu
julm dhata raha muskurata raha
jaal har raste me bichhata raha
fas gaya khud to bechain hota hai kyu
aaj rota hai kyu jaan khota hai kyu

Song #37
Abhi kya sunoge suna to hansoge…

The last movie whose song we took up day before yesterday was the 1967 movie Ghar Ka Chirag. And tonight we start with 1969 Hrishikesh Mukherjee movie Satyakaam starring Dharmendra and Sharmila Tagore, Hrishikesh’s best find in pairing, as admitted by him.

There were only three songs in the movie and these were composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal:

1.Abhi kya sunoge – Lata Mangeshkar
2.Do din ki zindagi – Lata Mangeshkar
3.Zindagi hai kya bolo – Kishore Kumar, Mukesh, Mahendra Kapoor

Lets take up the first song: Abhi kya sunoge sung by Lata Mangeshkar (The video itself gives the background of the songs):

Laxmikant Pyarelal with Lata Mangeshkar

abhii kyaa sunoge sunaa to ha.Nsoge
ki hai giit adhuuraa, taraanaa adhuuraa -2
jo tum chup rahoge jo kuchh na kahoge

Song #38
Do din ki zindagi…..

Just three songs in the 1969 Hrishikesh Mukherjee movie Satyakaam starring Dharmendra and Sharmila Tagore and already I am giving you the second song!

As soon as I give you this song, you will instantly compare it with the first: Abhi kya sunoge and get to know why Sharmila Tagore didn’t want to tell anything about her to Dharmendra in the first song!

I saw the movie when I was a young boy in Chandigarh. And, after listening to this song, you would want to see it too.

This is a very expressive song penned by Kaifi Azmi and composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal and sung by Lata Mangeshkar.

Please enjoy: Do din ki zindagi…..

do din kii zi.ndagii kaisii hai zi.ndagii -2
koi na ye jaane
ho.a
bhiitar a.ndheraa hai baahar hai raushanii
dekhe.n na parawaane
do din kii zi.ndagii kaisii hai zi.ndagii

Song #39
Aandhi aaye ke toofan…

His next movie was the 1969 Khwaja Ahmad Abbas movie Saat Hindustani that won him the National Award for Best Lyricist. The movie also won the Best Movie on National Integration Award.

The film portrays the heroic story of seven Indians who attempt to liberate Goa from the Portuguese colonial rule. The cast included Utpal Dutt, Madhu, A. K. Hangal, Anwar Ali (brother of Indian comedian Mehmood) and Amitabh Bachchan who made his debut with this film.

A Muslim poet Anwar Ali (Amitabh Bachchan) hails from Bihar and five other men, all belonging from different religions and different parts of India, join their seventh comrade Maria (Shehnaz Vahanvaty), a native of Portuguese-occupied Goa, to raise nationalist sentiments in that state by hoisting Indian flags on Portuguese forts and buildings.

All seven together (a still from Saat Hindustani)

JP Kaushik composed the following songs penned by Kaifi Azmi:

1. Ek manzil pe sabki nigahen rahen.
2. Aandhi aaye ke toofan.
3. Zulm hadd se badhega to.
4. Youn badhi jaise lehra ke dhara badhe.

Please enjoy Mahendra Kapoor sing: Aandhi aaye ke toofan…

aandhi aaye ki tufan koi gum nahi
hai yahi aakhiri imtihan sathiyo
imtihan sathiyo

yu badho jaise lahrake dhara badhe
thokre khaye to dil hamara badhe
is tarah jam ke tufaa me rakho kadam
ke kadam chumne ko kinara badhe
badh ke manzil ka sukh chain ban jayengi
badh ke manzil ka sukh chain ban jayengi
rashto ki ye kathinaiya sathiyo, sathiyo, sathiyo

ajnabi mod kato bhari rahgujar
jaal nafrat ke faile hai dekho jidhar
chup rahoge to badh jayengi duriya
bat karne se aasan hoga safar
jis juba me sunao sunao magar
jis juba me sunao sunao magar
aaj tum pyar ki dasta sathiyo, sathiyo, sathiyo

katal-o-barak se hum pyar karte nahi
thandi lasho ka vyopar karte nahi
jiska jo bhi watan hai mubarak use
hum kabhi sarhade paar karte nahi
hai ye dharti hamari to lahrayenge
hai ye dharti hamari to lahrayenge
apni dharti pe apna nishaa sathiyo, sathiyo, sathiyo

Song #40
Gore jism aur gulaabi gaal waali ladakiyan….

Two weeks of Kaifi’s lyrics so far. When we broke off on 15th Dec, we had taken up a song from Amitabh Bachchcan’s debut movie: Saat Hindustan about liberation of Goa; the song being an inspirational song.

From 1969 movie Saat Hindustani, lets now go to Sandeep Dar’s 1970 movie Saat Phere starring Pradeep Kumar and Meena Kumari.

A still from the 1970 movie Saat Phere

The movie had the following songs composed by Sudhir Sen and penned by Kaifi Azmi:

1. Gore jism gulaabi gaal waali.
2. Jo honge agar do laal.
3. Aji hum hi to hain.
4. Ghunghar baaje saath.
5. Saji sej se utha ke kaha.
6. Sata ke mujhako dilruba.
7. Tumse dil ki to koi baat.

Please enjoy Mohammad Rafi sing: Gore jism aur gulaabi gaal waali ladakiyan….(Hats off to Rafi for singing this seemingly trash song with gusto!)

gore jism haye haye gore jism aur gulabi gaal wali
ladkiya ladkiya jaan le leti hai lambe baal wali
ladkiya ladkiya la la ladkiya la la ladkiya

pyar me deti hai dhokha lutti hai khel me
mujhko daroga bana do sabko bhar du jail me
sabko bhar du jail me mast mast
mast mast tedhi tedhi chal wali ladkiya
jaan le leti hai lambe baal wali
ladkiya ladkiya
la la ladkiya la la haye ladkiya

dil sanwaro ka mila hai jindagi se iski
meri kismat me likhi hai
tees ki tees ki paitis ki tees ki paitis ki
aur mujhe bati hai solha saal wali ladkiya
solha saal wali ladkiya
jaan le leti hai lambe baal wali
ladkiya ladkiya
la la ladkiya la la haye ladkiya

hoth najuk ras bhare hai aur mahandi panv me
hoth najuk ras bhare hai aur mahandi panv me
koi pariyo ki kami hai yaro yaro apne ganv me
yaro apne ganv me kaam ki hoti hai
kaam ki hoti hai bas sasural wali ladkiya
jaan le leti hai lambe baal wali
ladkiya la la ladkiya la la haye ladkiya
gore jism aur gulabi gaal wali
ladkiya ladkiya jaan le leti hai lambe baal wali
ladkiya ladkiya la la ladkiya la la ladkiya

Song #41
Tumse bichhhadke chain kahan ham payenge…

His next movie was Naresh Saigal’s Maharaja starring Nutan and Sanjay Khan. Kaifi Azmi was back with his best pairing: with Madan Mohan.

Between the two of them they made the following songs:

1. Tumse bichhadke chain kahan ham payenge.
2. Kitni haseen hai mere pyaar ki nazar.
3. Maine pee li mera dil kiya.
4. Pee ki nazar gore badan se lipat gayi.
5. Raste ka maal saste mein aur saste ka maal bste mein.

Please enjoy Lata Mangeshkar sing: Tumse bichhhadke chain kahan ham payenge…

tumse bichhadke chain kaha ham payenge
hoge jahan tum ham bhi vahi aa jayenge
puchho kyun han han han han puchho kyun ham yeh kahenge
ke tum ho hamari manjil ke tum ho hamari manjil
tumse bichhadke chain kahan ham payenge
honge jahan tum hum bhi wahan aa jaayenge
dil humen laaya jahan hum aa gaye
dil humen laya jahan hum aa gaye
kitna dilkash hai ye ruhon ka safar
kitna dilkash hai ye ruhon ka safar

aao kanton par hai phulo par najar
darr hai kya divar kya jit kya hai har kya
ruk sakega pyar kya
phul toh kya hai kanto ko ham mahekayenge
mahekayenge mahekayenge
tumse bichhadke chain kahan ham payenge
nam honton par tumhara dil me pyar
nam honton par tumhara dil me pyar
bas yehi saj dhaj yahin apna singar
jindagi tumse hasin tum kahi aur ham kahi

dil khilona toh nahi
tum hi bata do kaise isse behlayenge behlayenge behlayenge
tumse bichhadke chain kahan ham payenge
hoge jahan tum ham bhi vahi aa jayenge
puchho kyun han han han han
puchho kyun ham yeh kahenge ke tum ho hamari manjil
tumse bichhadke chain kahan ham payenge

Song #42
Do dil toote, do dil haare…..

And that brings us to his 1970 Chetan Anand movie Heer Ranjha with some of his finest songs. It doesn’t require any guess to find that he, once again paired with Madan Mohan.

As with some of the movies of Chetan Anand, Priya Rajvansh played the role of Heer. Raaj Kumar was the Ranjha with Prithviraj Kapoor, Kamini Kaushal, AK Hangal, Ajit, Padma and Achla Sachdev in supporting roles.

(Poster courtesy: hindilinks4u.to)

Kaifi Azmi not just penned the songs but all the dialogues in verses were by him. The movie also made use of Waris Shah’s epic poem known as Heer.

The movie had the following songs:

1. Do Dil Toote Do Dil Haare Lata Mangeshkar
2. Milo Na Tum To Lata Mangeshkar
3. Nache Ang Ve Jagjit Kaur, Shamshad Begum
4. Doli Chadte Heer Lata Mangeshkar
5. Meri Duniya Mein Tum Aayi Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi
6. Tere Kooche Mein Tera Diwana Mohammed Rafi
7. Ye Duniya Yeh Mehfil Mohammed Rafi

We shall take up the first one tonight and then three tomorrow.

It doesn’t require any great skill to establish that the first one is in the Raag of my place in the hills: Raag Pahadi. The Tal is Kaherava. Rendition is by Lata Mangeshkar.

Please enjoy: Do dil toote, do dil haare…..

do dil TuuTe do dil haare

Song #43

Last night we had started taking up songs of the 1970 Chetan Anand movie Heer Ranjha on the lovers of yore; the role of Heer being done by Priya Rajvansh, the heroine of most Chetan Anand movies and the role of Ranjha being performed by Raaj Kumar.

As I mentioned, Kaifi Azmi penned some of his finest lyrics for the songs of the movie that were composed by Madan Mohan, arguably the best pairing of Kaifi Azmi with a music director.

We took up one song in Raag Pahadi: Do dil toote do dil haare sung by Lata Mangeshkar.

Here is the next song. This one is not sad but refreshingly romantic and the tune selected by Madan Mohan does full justice to the lyrics.

Please enjoy Lata Mangeshkar sing: Milo na tum to ham ghabraayen….

milo na tum to ham ghabaraaye
milo to aa.Nkh churaaye
hame.n kyaa ho gayaa hai
tumhii.n ko dil kaa raaz bataaye.n
tumhii.n se raaz chhupaaye.n
hame.n kyaa ho gayaa hai …

o bhole saathiyaa
dekhe jo shokhii tere pyaar kii oy hoy
o bhole saathiyaa
dekhe jo shokhii tere pyaar kii
aa.Nchal me.n bhar lii hamane
saarii bahare.n sa.nsaar kii
nayii adaa se ham iThalaaye.n
paayii khushii luTaaye.n
hame.n kyaa ho gayaa hai …

ruuThe kabhii kabhii maan gaye
baate.n tumhaarii ham jaan gaye
aa~
aisii adaaye.n qurabaan gaye
tumhe.n manaaye dil bahalaaye.n
kyaa kyaa naaz uThaaye.n
hame.n kyaa ho gayaa hai …

o sohane jogiyaa
ra.ng le hame.n bhii isii ra.ng me.n oy hoy
o sohane jogiyaa
ra.ng le hame.n bhii isii ra.ng me.n
phir se sunaa de ba.nsii
kaliyaa.N khilaa de gore a.ng me.n
vahii jo taane.n aag lagaaye
unhii.n se aag bujhaa_e.n
hame.n kyaa ho gayaa hai …

Song #44
Doli chadate hi Heer ne bain kiye….

Last night I was telling you about Waris Shah’s epic poem Heer.

“Waris Shah was born in Jandiala Sher Khan, Punjab, present-day Pakistan into a reputed Sayyid family and was a descendant of Sayyid Muhammad Al-Makki through his son Sayyid Badruddin.

Waris Shah (Pic courtesy: apnapunjablive.com)

His father’s name was Gulsher Shah. Waris’s parents are said to have died when he was young. Waris acknowledged himself as a disciple of an ustad from Kasur, namely Hafiz Ghulam Murtaza from whom he received his education. After completing education Waris moved to Malka Hans, a village twelve kilometres north of Pakpattan. Here he resided in a small room, adjacent to a historic mosque now called Masjid Waris Shah, until his death.

His mausoleum is a place of pilgrimage today, especially for those in love. The mausoleum complex was completed in 1978 and is a mixture of the Lahore School Architecture and Tughlaq Architecture.”

He is renowned for his Qissa Heer Ranjha or simply called Heer. The particular style of Punjabi singing the Heer by itself is called Heer.

Madan Mohan retained the original Heer style of singing in this one sung by Lata Mangeshkar. Kaifi Azmi just adapted the verses from Punjabi to Hindi.

Please enjoy: Doli chadate hi Heer ne bain kiye….(Original “Doli chadeyan maariyan Heer cheekhan”):

Dolii cha.Dhate hii hiir ne bain kiye o~
mujhe le chale baabul le chale
ve~ mujhe rok le baabul rok le tuu
Dolii bairii kahaar lai chale re

do chaar gha.Dii bhii na chain paayaa
duHkh dard musiibate.n lai chale
ve~ meraa kahaa sunaa sab maaf karanaa
kuchh roz tere ghar rah chale ve

tujhe raa.Njhanaa rab ke havaale kiyaa
ham des me.n zaalimaa ke chale
ve~ rahii pyaar kii jholii dekh khaalii
koii chiiz bhii saath na le chale ve

mere baad Kabar terii kaun legaa
tere bhaag me.n hai tanhaa_iyaa.N
ve~ mujhe aur ummiid thii aur huaa
kii rab ne beparavaa_i.nyaa ve
o~ kii rab ne beparavaa_i.nyaa ve

Author: Sunbyanyname

I have done a long stint in the Indian Navy that lasted for nearly thirty seven years; I rose as far as my somewhat rebellious and irreverent nature allowed me to. On retirement, in Feb 2010, the first thing that occurred to me, and those around me, was that I Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (you will find an article with this title in this blog) and hadn't lost all my noodles and hence thought of a blog titled 'This 'n That'. I later realised that every third blog is called 'This 'n That' and changed the name to 'Sunbyanyname'. I detest treading the beaten track. This blog offers me to air 'another way' of looking at things. The idea is not just to entertain but also to bring about a change. Should you feel differently, you are free to leave your comments. You can leave comments even when you agree and want to share your own experience about the topic of the blog post. Impudent or otherwise, I have never been insousciant and I am always concerned about the betterment of community, nation and the world. I hope the visitors of this blog would be able to discern it.
