THIS PATAKHAWALI, THIS BOMBAWALI, HAS NOTHING IN COMMON WITH DEEPAWALI

Lord Rama,
How far we have come from
That day,
When Hanuman heralded yours,
Sita’s, and Laxman’s re-entry into Ayodhaya
After fourteen years of exile?
People were ecstatic,
And lit lamps to signify
Victory of Light over Darkness
Knowledge over Ignorance
And, Good over Evil.

Rama returns

Do you think now they remember you
When they light bombs or crackers
Costing thousands of rupees
In the middle of night?
These intended to not just wake people
From their slumber
But, also to proclaim their new found riches,
Power, influence, glory and arrogance.
And all these whilst millions of poor
Sleep on empty stomachs.

Even a General Eisenhower
Talked about every bomb and rocket
Being a theft from those who are hungry,
Naked and homeless.
But, we, the Indians,
Peace-loving as we proudly call ourselves
Still carry on the charade
Of Ignorance leading Knowledge Darkness replacing Light
And help Evil conquer over Good.

This noise, this unchecked noise
Is already making us deaf
And blind to the real challenges
That India faces, Lord Rama’s India faces.
This naked and shameless display of ostentation
Has nothing to do with Humility
Purity, Modesty and Self-sacrifice, that you embodied
Making everyone wonder, in near and far lands,
Whether we are really with you O Ram,
Or are we got used to going the Raavan’s way?
